The desert rose can live for more than 500 years. It has distinguishing qualities that allow it to last for decades. For example, its stem has a bloated base that continues to inflate over time and can grow up to two meters in diameter. The stem stores critical nutrients that the plant uses to nourish the other parts of the plant as the weather changes.
Measure the diameter of the stem to determine the age of a desert rose. Every millimeter symbolizes one year for this slow-growing plant. It’s a seasonal succulent that sheds its leaves when the season isn’t right. Surprisingly, the plant receives sufficient nutrients even when other plants begin to die due to extreme weather conditions.
How long do desert rose plants live?

A: The Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) is a lovely and exotic-looking plant that needs very little care. The overall shape is akin to a well-trained bonsai tree, with an expanded trunk base and twisted limbs. Simple five-petaled flowers emerge in many shades of pink, white, red, and yellow in the summer.
In the summer, the Desert Rose thrives in full sun with regular watering. When the temperature drops to 55 degrees or below, you should drastically reduce your watering. It’s best to use a terra cotta pot because it allows water to drain fast. When repotting, use a cactus mix and avoid using a pot that is too large.
If your plant is being watered on a regular basis by seasonal rain, you may wish to relocate it to a dryer place. The plant will rot if the soil is damp for an extended period of time.
Sunlight
Desert roses require a lot of sunlight, and a lack of light could be the reason why they aren’t flowering. Place the plant where it will receive at least five to six hours of direct sunlight per day, if not more.
Fertilizer
A desert rose doesn’t need much fertilizer, but it does need to be fed on a regular basis to ensure that it gets the nutrients it needs to blossom. Using a balanced, water soluble fertilizer, feed an outdoor plant two or three times during the spring and summer. During the spring and summer, feed indoor Adeniums once a week with a half-strength water-soluble fertilizer.
It may also assist to apply a phosphorus-rich fertilizer or bone meal to induce flowering.
Why are the tips of my desert rose turning brown?
Watering: Since it’s spring in your location, I’d water the desert rose plant twice a week, making sure that the water drains well so that the soil may dry out. If the leaves have a brown tinge (rather than a black tinge), there isn’t enough water or the proper nutrients in the plant to deliver the nutrients to the leaves.

Anthracnose leaf spot is a fungal disease that causes yellowing, black blotching, and spotting on the leaves of your desert rose (Adenium obesum) (Colletotrichum spp.). The leaves turn yellow in the early stages, then develop black blotches and splotches before falling off.
These true desert plants prefer dry heat and can’t handle excessive wetness or humidity without succumbing to fungal infections. I advise keeping them away from areas where they will be exposed to rain and heavy humidity. A south-facing window or an inside solarium would be great. Bottom water the plants sparingly (to keep water off the leaves) in the hopes of eradicating the leaf spot. This disease can kill plants in the most severe cases. Is Epsom salt good for desert roses?
Epsom salts are highly recommended by rose producers in particular. It not only makes the foliage greener and lusher, but it also generates more canes and roses, according to them. To apply Epsom salt to existing rose plants, either mix 1/2 cup of the salts into the soil surrounding the bush and water well, or dissolve 1/2 cup of the salts in water and use to moisten the soil around the rose bush. This is best done in the spring, when the buds are just beginning to open.
How Do You Repot A Desert Rose Plant?
Simply put, carefully remove the plant from its container. It’s possible that you’ll have to cut or break it free from its root mass. Once you’ve freed the root ball, simply place it in a larger pot and fill it with a good quality cactus mix or other sharply draining soil mixture.
When Do You Repot Desert Rose?
In general, it’s ideal to repot the plant while the weather is warm and the plant is actively developing. The greatest time to go is in the early to mid April. The roots of the plants will have plenty of time to grow and establish in the spring and summer before going dormant in the winter if you do this.
If you like, repot your plant every couple of years to the next larger size pot, but keep in mind that it is feasible for this plant to live its entire life in a pot measuring 12″ inches or less.
How Deep Should You Plant Desert Rose?
In general, you should plant it at the same depth as before; but, if you want a more dramatic appearance, you can leave a little more of the caudex exposed. If you wish to do this, you might want to start by putting a thick layer of potting mix in the bottom of the container to support the plant.
Additionally, if you want to emphasize the trunk’s beauty, thoroughly wash the roots and trunk before starting the repotting procedure to remove any old soil.
Firm the dirt around the roots and add extra as needed once the plant has situated in its new container. Give it a good watering, and water it a couple of times a week for the rest of the growing season. You’ll want to cut back on watering when the weather cools.
What Kind Of Container Is Best For Desert Rose?
These plants prefer wide, shallow pots that let the soil to dry fast and provide the caudex opportunity to extend and expand. This container is also ideal for emphasizing the trunk and roots’ intriguing appearance.
It’s preferable to use a clay or ceramic pot with a depth of no more than 4 inches and a width of 6 to 12 inches. Look for a cactus-specific pot.
Plastic pots should be avoided. When replanting, make sure to use a cactus soil that drains quickly and don’t go any deeper than the original soil line on the caudex.
What Potting Mix Is Best For A Desert Rose?
These desert plants thrive in a gritty, fast-draining soil with a pH of around 6.0 and some water retention. You can use a commercial cactus mix, but you may want to add perlite for drainage and a little peat moss for water retention. Because peat moss is acidic, it aids in maintaining the proper pH level.
Should I Put Rocks At The Bottom Of My Planter?
A layer of broken pot shards or gravel at the bottom of planters has been advised for decades. We now believe that this advice is outdated. The roots of your plants may be damaged if you have rocks at the bottom of your planter. Furthermore, the gravel just takes up growing area that could otherwise be used by the plant.
How Often Should You Repot Desert Rose Plants?
You may never need to repot your Desert Rose because of its slow growth. It may be fine in a 12 inch pot for the rest of its life if it is firmly established. Even so, a little Desert Rose should not be placed in a particularly large container. This will result in a lot of root growth but little foliage and bloom.
In general, when repotting, go up to the next larger pot size. Repotting should be done no more than once every two or three years.
Can I Plant My Desert Rose In The Ground?
You absolutely can if you reside in an area with weather similar to the sub-Saharan regions where Desert Rose calls home. Desert Rose thrives in a bright, dry, full-sun environment.
NOTE: Adeniums planted in the ground require good drainage to avoid excess moisture and the risk of root rot. To improve drainage, add additional perlite to ordinary potting soil.
