Your plant is a crown of thorns, often known as Christ thorn (Euphorbia milii). There are several cultivars with flowers of various hues and variations that branch profusely, while others, like yours, appear to branch infrequently. Thin-stemmed, small-leafed kinds branch more readily than large-leaved, thick-stemmed ones like yours, in my experience.
Cut off the top of your plant to force it to develop branches. This removes “apical dominance” (when the main central stem dominates side stems) and promotes the redistribution of growth hormones, which should encourage a few latent buds further down the stem to begin to grow.
Simply squeeze your plant (with pruning shears; this plant is too prickly to pinch with your thumb and forefinger!)
You can either clip off the growing tip or severely chop the plant back to around 4 inches (10 cm) from the base. This will drive your thorny crown to grow at least one, if not several, branches.
When pruning a crown of thorns, wear gloves because the plant’s sap hurts the skin and can even be toxic if consumed. Spray the wound with cold water after pruning to cause the white sap to congeal and stop pouring.
