‘The starfish are unable to cope with the toxin and have broken up in the water, making the dive much faster and safer for the divers and the reef,’ Steve explained.

The new procedure is thought to have resulted in a two-and-a-half-fold boost in injection efficiency. The results have been spectacular, with 27 000 starfish removed in eight days at Arlington Reef, 9000 at Batt Reef, and 14 000 at Spitfire Reef near Cooktown.
