How To Pot Climbing Plants

Climbers that are cultivated in containers are quite adaptable and can give the landscape a new dimension, soften sharp edges, and add color and interest. They are ideal for giving patios and even balconies more height or for providing an extra measure of privacy from nosy neighbors. The majority of climbers can be grown in pots, while some are more suitable than others and some are only compatible with very big pots. The most popular selections are compact varieties of clematis and lonicera, but there are many more options as well.

The clematis

  • One of the most well-liked climbers is the clematis, which has distinctive blossoms in a variety of hues, including reds, purples, blues, pinks, and whites. They grow best in the sun or light shade, are often totally hardy, and are normally relatively simple to maintain.
  • Clematis that grow slowly are ideal for container gardening since they stay compact and bloom early. For a spectacular floral display, think about mixing two types with complimentary colors in the same container.
  • Three major classifications of clematis dictate how they should be grown:
  • Early blossoming is in Group 1. In the winter or spring, clematis blooms on growth from the previous year. Pick a location that is bright and protected, prune sparingly, and incorporate the majority of evergreen clematis.
  • Group 2 includes deciduous clematis, which bloom profusely in late spring and early summer or in the middle to late summer of the present growing season.
  • Group 3 is a diverse group of herbaceous and late-flowering clematis that die back to the ground in the winter. includes clematis cultivars with modest, fragrant flowers as well as those with enormous, showy blossoms.
  • Deciduous clematis should be planted with the root ball 5-8cm (2-3 inches) below the soil surface to encourage underground growth and to help protect them from clematis wilt. Like the majority of other climbers, evergreen cultivars like Clematis Armandii should be planted with the crown at soil level.
  • In order for clematis to climb, leaf stalks must be wrapped around supports, hence some kind of support must be offered. To achieve this, you can either attach or incorporate a support, such a trellis, inside your container or place it close to a wall or fence that has horizontal wires placed.

How may a potted climbing plant be supported?

Climbing houseplants can be supported well using wood, wire, rattan, bamboo, and rattan. Trellis, spindles, and even circular arches are available. You can always create your own if you have the necessary skills using a little amount of plastic-coated or non-rusting wire. Whatever method you choose, make sure the climbing plant supports are placed in the container at the time of planting. Your established roots will be in danger if thick stakes are later inserted into the planting mixture.

Climbing plants’ tender stems can be trained to wrap around supports. You can mold the plant into many shapes, such an orb, a pyramid, or even a heart, depending on the design of the support device you employ. You can loosely connect the shoots with string to the support if you want them to have a greater grip.

How is a climbing plant planted?

Before planting your climber, you’ll need to set up a framework for it to twine around, unless it is self-clinging. Whatever framework you decide on should be sturdy and secure because mature climbing plants get heavier with time. Among the greatest choices are:

1) Installing a series of horizontal wires spaced roughly 5 cm (2 inches) apart from a wall or fence, with the first wire suspended 30 cm (1 foot) above the ground and the other wires spaced every 30 to 45 cm (1-1.5 feet).

2) Setting up a trellis for your climbers to grow through. A trellis is an architectural design intended to support and exhibit climbing plants. It is built of an open framework or lattice of interlaced or intersecting pieces of wood, bamboo, or occasionally metal.

Develop your climber by climbing an obelisk. Larger obelisks might need to be fixed into the ground with a concrete footing, whereas smaller ones can simply be shoved into the ground.

4) Developing climbers through an established plant. Growing climbers in a host is a great way to maximize the use of a given area, especially since you can timing the appearance of each plant so that it follows the other and lasts longer. For instance, a crab apple in the height of its blossoming season would go well with a clematis that blooms in the spring.

Climbers grown in containers can be planted at any time of the year, so long as the ground is not frozen, flooded, or overly windy.

If you have the option, fall is the greatest time to plant because the soil is still warm enough to support some root growth before winter.

Plant in the late spring if you want to grow a climber in a container in an exposed garden so your plants have the entire summer to establish themselves before the colder weather arrives.

Before planting, give your climber plenty of water, and then let the extra water drain away.

Plant 30-45cm (1-1.5 feet) out from the base of the wall or fence to give the roots room to grow and to allow rainwater to reach the roots.

Make your planting hole 1.5 times as deep and twice as wide as the rootball. If your soil is very heavy in clay, break up the sides and bottom of the hole by gently pricking the smeared surfaces with a fork. This will encourage the roots to spread out and penetrate the soil around them.

Mix a lot of well-rotted organic matter, such manure or compost, into the backfill soil before setting it aside. This is especially crucial when planting in south or west-facing locations because the extended sun exposure will cause the earth to dry up more quickly.

To encourage roots to grow away from the rootball and into the surrounding soil, gently remove your plant from its container and pluck out any tangled roots at the base.

Use a cane that has been set across the planting hole to position yourself in the center of the hole and measure the depth. Almost all climbers should be planted with the top of the rootball level with the soil and at the same depth as they were in the pot. You will need to add some soil to the top of the hole if the climber is too low, or you will need to remove some soil from the bottom if it is too high.

Clematis is an exception, as they prefer to be buried 6 cm (2.5 inches) beneath the soil’s surface. In the event that the deadly clematis wilt disease manifests, this aids in defending the underground stem base. Although clematis that have been damaged by the disease may die back to the ground, there is a good probability that they will re-grow from underground buds at the base of the stems, essentially rescuing the plant.

Before backfilling the hole with your planting mix, place your climber in the center and slant it 45 degrees toward the base of the support.

To prevent air pockets from forming around your plant, carefully compact the soil, then water the area well. To retain moisture and control weeds, mulch the area with bark, pebbles, or decorative stone.

The majority of climbers will be delivered in a pot fastened with plastic ties on a bamboo cane. Using scissors, cut the links holding the plant to the cane, allowing the plant’s stems to spread out.

To hold the initial wire in place if you’re using wire supports, tuck the top of the cane under it. If your climber has many stems at the base, you can construct a framework made of three canes arranged in the shape of a fan. As before, you should slide the top of each cane under the wires to secure it there. Next, train a stem up each cane.

Cut any excess soft garden twine before tying the canes and shoots to your wire supports.

Finally, cut down any flimsy or lanky stems that are not being used for the main framework to the ground.

Follow the same guidelines if you’re growing your climber via a trellis, obelisk, pergola, or any other structure: if necessary, use canes to help your climber reach the supports, and tie in the steps with soft garden twine.

Regularly secure fresh growth with soft garden twine and stretch the canes as needed. It’s simplest to knot in the climber stems after the twine is fastened to your wires or other supporting structure.

We advise cutting the main stem in half if your climber’s stems are weak and spindly in order to give it more vigor and encourage it to brush out.

As your climber gets taller, you can use taller canes to extend the training fan shape and secateurs to trim any messy growth.

The canes can be cut off once your plant has developed stronger, woodier, self-supporting stems.

To prevent your climbers from drying out during the first few months after planting, keep them well-watered. When a frost is predicted, cover vulnerable climbers with multiple layers of horticultural fleece.

Should climbers use large pots?

I pass a green wall that is partially dead as I walk to work. It had fallen victim to the fate of many green walls, which frequently require much more work than is disclosed. I then considered the advantages of climbers versus green walls. Climbers prevailed. You just need to provide these plants with a surface for them to grow on if you want them to grow upward across something vertical. Although installing wires or nets may seem tedious, when you’re on your third replacement plant and the drip irrigation is still overwatering a specific area of your green wall, vine eyes and wire tensioners may start to look more appealing.

The capacity of green walls to fit into small places is one factor that draws people to them. Since watering a pot is far easier than watering a wall, many climbers are perfectly content to live in a container.

You’ll struggle if you opt to grow your climbers in a ground-level container that is, let’s say, the size of a window box. Even annual climbers like climbing nasturtiums and sweet peas require extra space for their roots. The majority of climbers, especially perennials, have developed to thrive in woodlands. Whether they are at the edge of the forest or deep in the shade, like ivy, they need a sturdy object to climb. Contrary to many pots, which are shallow, exposed, and frequently quite hot, woodland soils are deep, rich, and cold. You therefore need the largest pot you can locate. A good nursery-grown climber will be grown in a long tom pot, which is higher than it is wide, whether it is for a pot or the soil. A 15-20 litre container would be great for a perennial climber; something you can just about get your arms around. The size may appear excessive, but using something smaller would be a waste of money because you would have to repot eventually and water the plant constantly in the heat. If there is support for it to climb up, a nursery-purchased climber in a 20-liter or larger pot will cheerfully fill a 2 × 3 meter wall.

What climbers don’t require assistance?

Climbing plants may completely change the look of a garden by adding height to planting designs, covering bare walls or fences, climbing over pergolas, obelisks, and garden arches. Even the tiniest gardens can benefit from climbing plants, and many will thrive in pots.

In addition to stunning, sweet-smelling blooms, many climbing plants have lovely leaves. They provide an otherwise barren area with berries, blossoms, leaves, and shelter, which is worth their weight in gold to wildlife.

Roses that climb and ramble as well as pyracantha, which rambles over a structure and requires initial training and tying in, are the three types of climbing plants. Others, like clematis and honeysuckle, encircle a building and require initial tying in before they become established. Ivy and climbing hydrangea are examples of self-clinging climbers that may hold themselves completely without any assistance.

Some climbers work best when planted close to an outdoor seating area, trained up a pergola, or used to conceal ugly walls or fences. You can choose from climbers for sunny walls, climbers for shaded walls, climbers that are great for wildlife, and even annual and perennial climbers.

Clematis ‘Innocent Blush’

The clematis ‘Innocent Blush’ blooms light pink single and semi-double flowers from May to July, making it ideal for growing along trellises and other supports. After flowering, prune, and later in the summer it should bloom once more.

Can climbing clematis be grown in pots?

On terraces, patios, balconies, etc., or in other situations where the soil is inappropriate due to poor drainage or a high water table, growing clematis in containers is occasionally necessary. Clematis thrive in containers because they need good drainage, but they can’t stand summertime drying out.

Best containers for growing clematis

Materials that transport heat slowly, such as thick earthenware, stone, or wood, are preferable than metal or inexpensive plastic in order to provide the greatest amount of protection against hot circumstances. Dark colors are worse than light, reflective ones. Positioning the container in complete shade is ideal.

Drainage is key

The majority of containers have ample drainage, however I find that generally speaking, the more attractive the pot, the less holes it has. Expand or drill farther if the material is viable; otherwise, avoid using it. The container should, if at all feasible, be supported just off the ground. If it is positioned flush, the drainage holes may become clogged, which will harm the plant. Contrary to conventional belief, you shouldn’t fill the bottom of the pot with gravel.

Container size

Clematis have broad, voracious roots. Smaller kinds can live in a small pot, but their flowering and resistance to disease will be poor. A good-sized container should be at least 18″ (45 cm) deep and 15 inches (40 cm) wide. These measurements pertain to the smallest dimension and are the absolute minimum. Therefore, the width at the base is what matters if the pot is narrower at the base than the top.

Compost matters

Avoid composts made from peat for a variety of reasons. In addition to being environmentally unsound, it is nearly impossible to moisten once dried and contains almost no nutrients on its own. Garden soil shouldn’t be used either because it typically performs very poorly in posts and doesn’t hold water properly.

John Innes No. 3 compost absolutely cannot be replaced, and the cost is entirely justified. It is soil-based, has great drainage, and includes the slow-release nutrients required to maintain a plant in good condition for a very long time. It may also contain a tiny quantity of peat.

Support container-grown Clematis

This would make a good subject for a book. Because they have a lot of foliage, clematis resemble sails. The support can break and harm your plant if it is not sturdy and securely fastened.

Sticks within the container are typically not a good idea since they rattle the wind when they wave in the breeze. My group 3 clematis are all container-grown plants (or C). These clematis bloom as the current year’s growth continues. They benefit from being cut back every year in late winter to 12–18″ above soil level. This implies that the plant can be transported to different sites and that its supports can be changed or repaired as needed. With a Montana, it’s difficult…

Maintenance of container-grown Clematis

Make sure to water them frequently throughout the growing season. A dried-out clematis won’t quickly pardon you (if at all). In the warmest, driest summers, two or three times per week of irrigation is sufficient.

While watering, you can feed your clematis. Use a liquid feed (root and foliar) once every two weeks, such as Liquid Growmore, which contains an equal amount of nitrogen (N) and potash (K). The composition of each fertiliser is listed on the label. Use one that is evenly split between N and K. As soon as the plant begins to grow, start feeding it. However, as soon as you notice a flower bud, stop. After that, wait to feed again till blossoming is over.

If flowering persists into early autumn, wait to fertilize until the spring after. Late in the growing season, too much feed promotes soft growth that will be killed by frost. Additionally, you prune your clematis in a container exactly the same way and at the same time as you would in the soil.
