Many cactus flowers remain wide open from approximately 12 a.m. until 4 p.m. and then begin to close, despite the fact that light intensity and temperature are at their peak at that time. I couldn’t come up with a plausible reason, but it’s most likely to reduce water loss due to evaporation. This would be a fun elementary or junior high school research topic, and I’ll offer it to my younger daughter, who will participate in her school’s 6th grade science fair next year.
