What Is Carex?

For reliable identification, Carex plants must have ripe seeds. The underground organs and the basal sections of the stems must also be examined. The color of the leaf sheath, the presence or absence of blades, and the form of the sheath as it disintegrates can all be observed at the plant’s base. To assess whether the plants are rhizomatous or clumped, look at their underground organs.

How do you use Carex?

Spreading Sedge, which is native to densely wooded parts of eastern North America, can be utilized as a ground cover or accent in damp woodland gardens, shady perennial beds, or containers.

How do I find my sedge in PA?

Sedges are distinguished from grasses by their three-angled stems and structurally distinct flowers, with female flowers enclosed in a sac-like structure called the perigynium, which is managed by a single scale. Pennsylvania Sedge is a tiny dry-land sedge that forms dense clumps in the chilly season. The flowering stems (culms) have a triangular cross-section, are 5 to 18 inches tall, green in color, and are normally smooth with some slight roughness at the top. These grow singly from the rhizome and have a number of alternating stem leaves. The bases are a reddish color.

The leaf blades are mid-green in color, smooth, grass-like, and 0.5 to 3.6 mm wide, and alternate along the stem and from the base. The stem leaves are shorter than the base leaves, which can be up to 12 inches long. It’s possible that the surfaces will be a little rough. The leaves arch over, and the leaf clump rarely exceeds 8 inches in height. Some leaves will remain evergreen in locations where the winters are mild. Many elder dead leaves surround the new leaves.

The sheaths of the leaves are light green in color and usually smooth with horizontal veining. The leaf sheath’s anterior section is V-shaped.

Pistillate (female) spikes and a staminate (male) spike above the pistillate ones make up the inflorescence. There can be one to three (4) pistillate spikes, which can be separated or overlapped, and usually only one terminalstaminate spike, which is normally on a short stalk above the pistillate. In this plant, the inflorescence is surrounded by an agreen bract that is shorter than the inflorescence itself. The male spike is brown with pale stamens and measures 8 to 24 mm long and 1.3 to 4 mm broad. Female spikes are substantially shorter, with four to thirteen perigynia. (Perigynia, singular – perigynium) are bladder-like sacs that encase the female flower and later the fruit.

When immature, the perigynia are pale green in color, ovate in shape, 2.2 to 3.4 mm long, 1.1 to 1.5 mm wide, veinless, with extremely fine surface hair and a 0.5 to 0.9 mm long straight beak. The pistillate perigynia’s scales are a dark reddish-brown color with narrow white edges, oval in shape, 2 to 4 mm long and 1.3 to 2.8 mm wide, or equaling the perigynium body, including the beak, with scale tips tapered to a point or more obtuse. Scales of stamina are elliptic to oval in shape.

Female flowers feature three slender white stigmas that grow into a dark brown 3-sided achene when mature. Florets are pollinated by the wind. Germination of achenes requires 60 days of cold stratification.

The clump-forming Pennsylvania Sedge has cord-like reddish brown to dark brown horizontally spreading rhizomes. The rhizomes’ stolons spread and create plant colonies, which are the primary route of regeneration for this species. Although it can reseed, seedlings are uncommon, and growing plants from seed is difficult. Unlike most sedges, Pennsylvania sedge favors well-drained upland areas with full to partial light, especially in the open forest understory and among oaks, hence one of its alternate common names, Common Oak Sedge. It can withstand drought and tolerates shade. It will create a good ground cover in dry shade but will not blossom much. Before the oaks leaf out, this is one of the first sedges to bloom. Because White-tailed Deer do not consume it, it can be used as a low-maintenance ground cover. If you don’t have any control over it, it can spread quickly and be termed invasive.

Carex, the genus name, is derived from Latin and refers to the traditional term for Sedges. The species name, pensylvanica, refers to the original type site of Pennsylvania. The originator of the plant classification, âLam.â, is a reference to Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829), a French naturalist and biologist who, among other things, produced the Flore Francaise in three volumes. He is widely known for his hypothesis of acquired qualities inheritance.

USDA, USFS, and Minnesota officials have all agreed on the term “Pennsylvania Sedge.” C. lucorum and C. heliophila are sedges in the Acrocystis Section that are comparable to C. pensylvanica. The first is uncommon in Minnesota, whereas the second is absent. The fundamental distinction between C. pennsylvanica and C. lucorum is that the latter’s perigynia beaks are longer, ranging from 0.9 to 1.6 mm, and the upper stems have rough surfaces.

What animals eat sedge?

Many species of wildlife eat the seeds of native sedges, including ducks, grouse, wild turkeys, sandpipers, and sparrows, to mention a few. Caterpillars and tiny mammals use them as a food source. Sedges give an early meal before most native grasses grow in the spring since they bloom in the spring. How do I know what sedge I have?

These are the most common sedge plants, but you may need to take a specimen to your county extension or master gardener’s clinic to identify others.

Most sedges can be kept under control by mowing them frequently to remove the seed heads and prevent them from spreading. You’ll have to use herbicide sedge weed control if you have a widespread infestation.

Sedge weeds are difficult to control using pre-emergence herbicides. For excessive sedge lawn weeds, spot application of the right herbicide or broad range spraying can be effective. Read the directions and follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions as you would with any herbicide application.

What can I grow with Carex?

Carex testacea can be grown with other drought-tolerant grasses or perennials, such as sedum (shown), or as a specimen plant in a large container. In a herbaceous border, its architectural form makes it a great foil for cottage garden plants. Grow in full sun to moderate shade in well-drained soil for optimal results.

How often should you water Carex?

Sedge plants require very little attention. They don’t require much fertilizer, are easy to move, and grow quickly enough to be utilized as a lawn. Sedge plants tolerate little mowing in lawn circumstances and require little more maintenance, unlike regular turf grass, which requires a lot of nitrogen and can become weedy.

Feed the plant with a light nitrogen plant food in the early summer when fertilizing.

Irrigate your plants in the sun at least three times every month. Irrigate only once a month for plants in shadier places unless your region is experiencing severe drought, in which case water twice a month. Watering should be stopped in the fall and winter.

To maintain a more orderly appearance, trim back sedges after they have bloomed if desired. You can mow the plants, but do it with a sharp blade and no lower than 2/3 of the height of the plant. Divide the sedge between spring and early summer if the plant begins to die down in the center. This will result in more plants. Cut off the seed heads in early spring if you don’t want the plant to seed.

How far apart should Carex be planted?

Plants with a suggested spacing of 24″ apart, for example, should be spaced at least 12″ apart from the bed’s (or surfaced area’s) edge to the plant’s center. Stagger the plants in the second row, and so on, until the area is filled.
