It’s a terrific time to buy and grow caladium tubers right now (botanically, they are tubers rather than bulbs). Many others, on the other hand, are unable to identify a clear top and bottom. It’s not difficult once you know what to look for. The bottom of the tuber is rounder and smoother, as seen in the photo on the right. As shown in the tuber on the left, the hairy side with the points (those are the developing points where the leaves will emerge) is on top. Because not only the shoots but also the roots sprout from the top of the tuber, the top appears “hairy.” What appears to be hair is actually old, dry roots from the previous growing season. Because the roots and shoots emerge from the top of the tuber, it’s critical to plant it deep enough. Plant the tubers so that the tops of the tubers are covered with 2 inches of dirt. In well-prepared beds, space the tubers 8 to 12 inches apart (depending on how much the cultivar you’re planting grows). Apply a couple of inches of your preferred mulch after planting and water it in.
You can also buy caladiums that have already sprouted and are growing in little pots. These will produce a more vivid display of foliage in a shorter amount of time. If you want to save money and don’t need instant color, tubers are a better option.
