How tall is milkweed?
The Asclepiadaceae (milkweed) family includes common milkweed. It is one of around 115 species found in the Americas. The majority of species are found in tropical or dry environments. Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine, is commemorated by the genus name Asclepias. Commonmilkweed (wart removal and lung illnesses) and butterfly weed, A. tuberosa, are two milkweed species with a long history of medical usage (also known as pleurisy root, used for pleurisy and other lung disease). The specific epithet, syriaca, refers to Linnaeus’ mistaken belief that it came from Syria. It’s a widespread and weedy species that can be found throughout the eastern United States, the easternmost prairie states, and southern Canada from New Brunswick to Saskatchewan. It can be found in fence rows, roadside ditches, fields, prairies, and pastures. It will grow ingardens and even thin lawns if given the chance. It tolerates light shade but is primarily a full-sun species.
This milkweed reaches a height of about 1.5 meters (5 feet) and grows in clusters of stout stems. It has rhizomes and forms colonies quickly. The leaves are 15-20 centimeters long (6-8 inches) and 5-9 cm broad (2-3.6 inches). They’re fairly thick, with a prominent midrib on the underside. The upper surface is light to dark green, while the lower surface is lighter at times, almost white. A milky latex is exuded by brokenleaves and stems. Flowers are produced in roughly spherical clusters (umbels) at the plant’s top, with 2-5 clusters per plant on average. Each bloom measures around 2 centimeters (0.75 inches) in length and 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) in width. Flowers are perfumed and range in color from greenish-pink to rosy pink to purplish-pink. Fruits (pods) are roughly 10 cm (4 in) long, swollen, and covered with little finger-like projections. They start out green and turn brown as they age. They crack apart to expose 50-100 seeds, each with a white, fluffy coma (also known as a “parachute”) that enables for wind dissemination.
Nature’s huge food market for insects is common milkweed.
Over 450 insects have been identified as feeding on some part of the plant. The nectar-laden flowers attract a variety of insects, and it is not uncommon to see flies, beetles, ants, bees, wasps, and butterflies on the blossoms at the same time. Hummingbirds will occasionally try, but fail, to extract nectar. Its sap, leaves, and flowers are also edible. It is one of the most essential food plants for monarch caterpillars in the northeast and midwest (Danaus plexippus). The colorful (red with black dots) red milkweed beetle (Tetraopes tetraophthalmus), the milkweedtussock caterpillar (Euchaetes egle), and the large (Oncopeltus fasciatus) and small (Lygaeus kalmia) red and black milkweed bugs are also common feeders. Because both adults and nymphs are seed predators, the latter two are highly devastating. They can annihilate 80 to 90% of a colony’s seed crop. The crimson (or orange-red) and black coloration of most of these insects is referred to as aposematic coloration; that is, the colors signal that the organism is not suitable for consumption.
Most insects and mammals are poisoned by milkweeds, which contain varying quantities of cardiac glycoside chemicals. The cardiac glycosides act as a protection for some insects. They can store them in their tissue, rendering them inedible to other animals or harmful to them. Birds avoid them and the caterpillars because monarchbutterflies utilize this defense. What the birds don’t realize is that northern monarch butterflies that eat common milkweed develop very little harmful chemicals and are possibly edible. Southern butterflies amass enormous amounts of chemicals from other milkweed species, making them poisonous. Encourage existing patches and establish new ones to help monarch butterflies. The plant germinates quickly and spreads quickly via deep rhizomes. Because common milkweed is weedy and difficult to eradicate, it should only be planted in areas where its spread may be allowed.
Will butterfly weed bloom first year?
Milkweed, also known as asclepias, is native to North America, and one of them, Asclepias tuberosa, has been named Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association this year. This plant, sometimes known as butterfly weed or butterfly milkweed, has bright orange flowers that attract a variety of butterflies and bees with nectar and pollen. Butterfly weed’s foliage isn’t a favorite food of monarch caterpillars, but it can help them survive. This drought-tolerant plant prefers a dry, sunny environment and is hardy in Zones 3 to 9.
Upright stems with clusters of bright orange flowers contrast nicely with the shiny green leaves of butterfly weed. Unlike other members of the genus, the stem sap is not milky. This milkweed is not invasive since it does not spread by runners like common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca). Although deer are not attracted to butterfly weed, aphids can be a problem in gardens and greenhouses.
This plant is expected to be in high demand in the coming years. Butterfly weed blooms readily the first year after seeding, but there are a few key points to remember if you want to grow it commercially.
This species displays some of the most extreme photoperiod reactions we’ve ever seen. It’s an obligate long-day plant, which means it has to flower on long days. When grown at an average of 68° F, plants develop quickly under photoperiods of 14 hours or more, and begin flowering about eight to nine weeks after transplant. Plants that are exposed to photoperiods of 12 hours or less, on the other hand, die dormant after a few days (Figure 1, pictured above). Leaves droop, shoot growth appears to stop, and existing flower buds may suffocate (Figure 2). Unfortunately, simply reverting to longer days will not return the plants to active growth. A nine-week or longer cold treatment is required to break this dormancy; in our testing, all dormant plants treated to 41° F for 15 weeks bloomed.
It is critical to provide long days to plants in order to keep them actively growing. We propose at least 16 hours of daylight or four hours of night disruption illumination. A minimum intensity of 2 molm2s1 should be delivered by photoperiodic illumination. Use incandescent lights or LED bulbs intended to control blooming that emit both red and far-red radiation. Maintain these extended photoperiods for plants until natural daylengths reach at least 14 hours.
Butterfly weed has a huge tap root, making transplanting or dividing established plants difficult. It’s critical to utilize a well-drained medium in container production, so consider adding more perlite to a standard peat+perlite mix. During production and cold treatments, be careful not to over-water. The taproot attracts fungus gnat larvae, so keep an eye on the roots if your plants aren’t doing well.
Butterfly weed can grow up to 3 feet tall in the wild, but in container production, our plants were only 12 to 18 inches tall when they first bloomed. Sprays of daminozide (e.g., B-Nine, Dazide), paclobutrazol (e.g., Piccolo, Bonzi), and uniconazole (e.g., Piccolo, Bonzi) are apparently helpful for height management (e.g., Sumagic, Concise). To help fill out containers, use many plugs per pot or squeeze seedlings soon after transplant.

Why is milkweed illegal?
Toxins found in milkweed can be dangerous to pets, animals, and humans. The milky liquid that gives it its name seeps out of the stems and leaves. This sap includes poisons known as cardiac glycosides or cardenolides, which are hazardous to animals in large doses.
“Animals rarely consume milkweed unless there is a scarcity of good fodder or if the plants freeze, for example.” US Department of Agriculture
The popular belief is that milkweed should not be planted at all. The truth is that most animals won’t eat it because of the flavor, but if you’re still apprehensive, here are some methods for dealing with milkweed.
Which milkweed is invasive?
“It’s sad that such a lovely and vital plant in our North American ecology is labeled as a weed,” Miriam explains. The invasiveness of common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is the basis of the plant’s negative rep. It was also on the Ministry of Natural Resources’ noxious weeds list in Canada.
The good news is that there are milkweed varieties that do not spread. “Red milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) and butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa) are also good for monarch butterflies,” explains Miriam. “Both of these plants serve as host plants for adult monarch butterflies as they lay eggs, as well as food sources for the larvae” (caterpillars). These two alternatives do not have rhizomes and are used by monarch butterflies just as frequently as common milkweed.”
Red milkweed will grow in any soil type, according to Miriam, but it prefers medium to moist soils. It prefers direct sunlight (though it will tolerate a bit of shade). “Butterflyweed tolerates some shade as well, but prefers sand or loam for its soil. “It’s best if the soil is dry to medium,” she says.
And, according to Miriam, you can still plant common milkweed, especially if your soil is dry and clay. She advises planting it with a mix of other native flowers and grasses that will take up the different levels of soil. “Common milkweed spreads by rhizomes (underground runners or roots), which is why it can spread so quickly. You provide little room for the rhizomes to migrate by putting it among a dense planting of other native species.”
Other types of monarch nutrition that you can include in your garden, according to Miriam, are liatris, goldenrod, and asters.
Unfortunately, I haven’t seen many monarch butterflies flying around in my garden in recent years. I’ve seen a few other species, particularly near my buddleia, but I want to make sure the monarchs have a safe haven in my garden as well. I quickly shared the #GotMilkweed message with other gardeners so they might add it to their list of must-plants. “Anything that puts the issue of native pollinator health to the forefront is a good thing,” Miriam said, noting that the monarch butterfly issue is being brought to light thanks to David Suzuki and his team’s efforts. “In a way that only David Suzuki can, he’s increasing awareness, and it’s proving to be a positive step forward.”
Do milkweed plants spread?
Asclepias syriaca, or common milkweed, is a perennial plant that can be found in a variety of settings, including roadsides, fields, and gardens. It is a North American native that reproduces primarily by seed. It can spread from its rhizomatous root system once it has established itself. The stems of common milkweed are covered in opposing, oval-shaped leaves. The pink, clustered flowers have a strong scent that attracts a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The flowers eventually give way to bumpy seed pods, which split open and release silky-haired windborne seeds.
White, latexy sap rich with deadly cardiac glycosides can be found in all parts of the plant. The poisonous chemicals in milkweed prevent most predators from eating it. The monarch butterfly is one of the few exceptions, having evolved the ability to eat and accumulate the toxin in its body as a defense mechanism. Monarch butterflies are so dependent on milkweed for survival that they cannot complete their life cycles without it.
Common milkweed is often too aggressive and weedy in the landscape to be widely used in beds and borders. It thrives in field edges or thickets that aren’t well-kept. If you already have common milkweed in your garden, remove immature seed pods to prevent further spread. Because milkweed is a perennial, it will reappear in the same location the following summer, but its spread will be limited.
Individual plants can also be hand-pulled or treated with herbicide on a regular basis, but don’t be too hasty this season. Female monarchs have most likely placed their eggs on the undersides of the leaves or are in the midst of doing so. Only one egg is placed per plant on average, and it can be difficult to see. The Monarch caterpillars, which are already active in many areas, are more visible. Feeding marks on the leaves, as well as evidence of frass, are clear indicators of their existence. Their yellow, white, and black banded bodies, as well as black tentacles on the front and back ends, make them highly identifiable. Wait until the butterflies have emerged from their crysalids, or until late spring, before the butterflies arrive, to remove milkweed plants.
If you decide to remove all of the common milkweed from your garden, try replacing it with other native milkweed species that are less invasive. Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa), and whorled milkweed (Asclepias verticillata), all of which grow in bunches and are suitable candidates for perennial beds, will also attract monarch butterflies. Leave some common milkweed on the margins for the ultimate butterfly habitat.
Butterfly Weed Fall and Winter Care
Butterfly Weed can be pruned back to the ground in the fall and winter. Simply take pruning shears and cut the plant to the ground whenever the leaves and stalk appear dead or dry. It will reappear in the spring.
In late summer and early autumn, when the flowers have gone, seed pods will begin to form.
The pods will eventually turn brown and open, dispersing Butterfly Weed seeds into the breeze.
The leaves will turn yellow shortly after this, eventually going entirely brown.
The plant is about to go dormant.
The plant can be pruned back to ground level once the foliage has become fully brown.
In the spring, it will reappear.
Why does my Butterfly Weed keep dying?
If Butterfly Weed isn’t placed in the right growing conditions, it will die. If you’ve tried planting Butterfly Weed in the same area several times and it keeps dying, there are a few things to look into:
- Test the pH level of your soil if you have enough sun and good drainage. Butterfly Weed prefers a pH of 6-7.5.
Is Butterfly Weed Invasive?
Butterfly Weed isn’t a bothersome plant. Butterfly Weed, unlike ordinary milkweed, does not spread via rhizomes, or later or horizontal roots. The only way for Butterfly Weed to spread is by seed. Butterfly Weed does not self-seed very much, if at all, due to the nature of seed distribution (floating away on the wind).
Deadhead Butterfly Weed
Butterfly Weed can be deadheaded to extend the blooming season in the summer. However, the number of blooms you receive will be smaller than the number of blooms you received initially.
Wait until the flower petals begin to fall off a bloom before deadheading Butterfly Weed.
Then, below the bloom, cut the stalk at the first leaf junction.
I don’t deadhead my Butterfly Weed because I prefer to get as many seeds as possible.
Butterfly Milkweed can be deadheaded to limit the quantity of seeds produced.
Pruning Butterfly Weed
Butterfly Weed can be clipped if you want to keep your plants as short as possible. Trim or cut back a stalk 1/3 of its height in the early summer. This will encourage the plant to branch out, resulting in a decreased overall height.
How tall does swamp milkweed get?
Asclepias incarnata, or swamp milkweed, is named after Asklepios, the Greek deity of medicine. Incarnata gets its name from the Latin words carn, which means flesh, and atus, which means resembling, because its color resembles flesh or a dusty rose.
Swamp milkweed is a tall herbaceous moist-loving perennial that prefers sunny openings in swamps, marshes, bogs, fens, and along stream banks and ditches. When broken, this robust and erect stemmedplant grows three to five feet tall and, like its common milkweed cousin, exudes a milky juice.
The smooth narrowleaves of swamp milkweed are lance-shaped with sharp ends and come in pairs. The leaf’s edges may bend inward and upward, resembling the prow of a ship.
Colors of the fragrant umbelled flower clusters range from light mauve to pink to reddish-violet. Five teeny-tiny delicate petals are capped with five nectar cups, which are essential for pollination. Each little cup has an upward curling horn within it. A fly lands on the blossom and lands on the horn. Its leg enters a passage between the cups to collect pollen. As it visits additional flowers, the same process is repeated. It transports its pollinia in enormous saddlebags before depositing them to fertilize other plants (sometimes insects are not strong enough to pulltheir feet out of the slits and they are trapped there and die). Milkweed fruit/seeds are linked to silky down and housed in longone-chambered follicles, or pods, which have an attractive appearance. When the follicles dry, they split open and release the seeds into the wind via their downy parachutes.
The monarch butterfly, in particular, is attracted to swamp milkweed, which attracts a large number of butterflies. The monarch butterfly only lays its eggs on milkweeds when it isn’t nectaring. It will grow in typical garden soil as long as it is not completely dry, particularly in the spring. As a result, it’s a great addition to a native plant garden.
