Does Aspidistra grow indoors?
Aspidistra elatior is also known as the Cast Iron Plant (ass-pi-DIS-truh; ee-LAY-tee-or). Old-fashioned, hardy indoor plants with leathery dark green leaves are aspidistra. For cooler sections of your home, aspidistras are the perfect indoor plants to bring the tropics inside.
When houses were anything but light and airy during the Victorian era, cast-iron plants and the Howea Kentia palm were two popular interior plants.
The strong, low-growing perennial Cast Iron Plant is found in the dense woods of Japan and Taiwan in Asia. It belongs to the family Asparagaceae. The Aspidistra genus has about 100 species, more than 60 of which are Chinese in origin.
Should I mist Aspidistra?
Older leaves that turn yellow quickly are a telltale indicator of overwatering, which is typically brought on by insufficient light. Other symptoms of overwatering include moldy or heavy soil, stunted growth, and a decaying foundation. Despite the fact that this plant can thrive in darker environments, the frequency of irrigations must be decreased to avoid the possibility of root rot. Origins
Using the Greek word for “shield” () and the genus name of Tupistra, in allusion to its foliar structure, John Ker Gawler originally described Aspidistra in 1822. Despite the initial classification, it was largely disregarded until the 1980s, when morphological research led to the correct placement from the Lilaceae family to the Asparagaceae.
During the Victorian era’s usage of gas-powered lighting, homes frequently had soot-covered surfaces and noxious gases that not only gave people headaches and nausea but also poisoned plants to the point of death. The only two plants that made it through this terrible period were Kentia Palms and the recently discovered Aspidistra, which, when seen in family photos, symbolize immense riches and fortune. Once the lighting became commonplace, many other plants from “The New World” were successfully grown in the homes, and their popularity soon faded. An underground “rhizome” that serves as a stem and houses the roots, stored energy, and petioles is where the foliage of an Aspidistra joins. In the spring and summer, the rhizomes can be multiplied via division or left to fill the pot.
There are two species of Aspidistra found in our homes today: the A. elatior, which is currently popular in retail, and the older, less well-known A. sichuanensis, which has thinner leaves than the former.
10 – 26C (50 – 80F) H1b (Hardiness Zone 12) – This plant can be cultivated indoors or outdoors in a protected area during the summer when temperatures are above 10C (50F). Avoid exposing this plant to direct sunlight if you decide to take it outside because it could cause sunburn and dehydration. Watch out for bugs frequently, especially while bringing it back inside.
Spread
Up to 0.6 m tall and 1 m wide, with the final height taking 3 to 8 years to reach. In the correct cultivation, each rhizome can generate up to three new leaves each season.
Pruning & Maintenance
To promote healthier growing conditions, remove yellow or decaying leaves as well as any plant detritus. Always use clean shears or tools when pruning to lower the risk of bacterial and fungal infections. Never cut through yellowed tissue as this could lead to severe harm from bacterial infections or other disorders. To avoid shocking the plant and resulting in decreased growth and a decline in health, always create clean incisions.
Propagation
Rhizome Cuttings (Easy) – Select the strongest, oldest rhizomes that are free of injury or illness. Using two to four fronds within each rhizomatous section, this approach can be used from spring through early summer. Using a clean knife, make a direct cut below a node, separating its root systems from the remainder of the root ball. To ensure that the propagated rhizome has enough energy stored to continue developing, make sure it is at least 5 cm (2 inches) long. Place the rhizome sideways over a bed of moist compost that has “Houseplant” written on it. To keep the surrounding moisture in place and to encourage new development, sprinkle half a centimeter of earth onto the rhizome. This procedure could take up to a few weeks. For success, keep out bright sunshine and provide high humidity at temperatures between 15 and 59 degrees. After it has produced its second new leaf, handle it normally and according to the above care instructions!
Flowers
The little purple rosette flowers on mature specimens, which emerge in spring or summer an inch above the soil line, are perennial. Botanists have been perplexed by its blooming process for many years due to its low growth rate, which contrasts sharply with the ideal height of typical flowers to draw in flying pollinators. If pollination is successful, tiny red berries with one or two seeds typically form in the flower’s urn. A domestically grown specimen has a possibility of blooming indoors; the ones that were just repotted in the middle of winter have the highest chance. The majority of flying insects that pollinate the flowers are fungus gnats.
Variegated Cultivars (Just a few of them!)
“Lennon’s Song” – The leaves of this plant have thin lime stripes slashed across them. Robin Lennon, who was born in Florida, originally chose and cultivated aspidistra plants in California.
“Asahi” is a white-tipped species with the usual Aspidistra green base and a mottled mixture of the two colors in between.
The cultivar “Okame” (syn. “Variegata”) was extremely well-liked by growers in the late 20th century. Compared to other variegated varieties, the foliage has broader leaves that are covered in vertical white bands from the tip to the rhizome.
An earlier Japanese cultivar called “Sekko-kan” has tiny white stripes across the top half of the leaf. When fully grown, some of the leaf-tips may completely turn white, much like the “Asahi” type. This variety is occasionally referred to as the “White Snowy Crown” Aspidistra.
The cultivars “Milky Way” and “Well Spotted” are members of the “Sichuanenis” group and have thinner leaves than the cultivars listed above (members of the “Elatior” group). Each yellow spot on the leaves is about 0.3 cm across the leaf and covers the entire surface. Below is an image of the Milky Way.
Kinboshi: This cultivar, which features yellow mottles like the “Milky Way,” has the added benefit of a lime halo covering each spot. With this type, the variegations frequently appear more strongly.
Another yellow-spotted variation is called “Stars & Stripes,” although in this cultivar, lime stripes are scattered across the leaf blade. Very difficult to come by in the UK.

Can Aspidistra be placed outside?
Few houseplants will withstand as much neglect as an aspidistra if you want a genuinely unbreakable houseplant. It can withstand more shadow than practically any other plant, in addition to months of drought, the coldest drafts, and nearly any insect. Therefore, the species was known as the “cast iron plant” in Victorian times.
But exactly how unbreakable is unbreakable? Well, I had a specimen that the mailman had left in a trash cabinet at my front door when I was testing out plants for one of the tropical gardens I designed for the Chelsea Flower Show. This was still in its sealed cardboard box when I eventually found it a month later, and it came out looking as though nothing had occurred. No other plant that I am aware of would survive this treatment without resembling wet mush or a dried-out skeleton.
Few people are aware that aspidistras have a surprising amount of cold endurance given their tropical appearance, which makes their robust constitution equally beneficial outside as it is indoors. Even though aspidistras are regarded to be reliably hardy species like fatsia, cordylines, and phormiums, estimates of the exact temperatures they can tolerate range greatly. However, I have seen aspidistras survive winters that have been devastating to these plants. This means that they are the ideal choice if you live in a more temperate area and have a protected garden that is afflicted by dry shadow, the gardener’s worst nightmare. Almost every modest urban plot I have seen has at least one area that fits this description (since surrounding walls not only produce a relatively sheltered microclimate, but they also function as a rain/sun shadow to create the location that is both sun-starved and extremely dry). It is thus surprising how seldom this genus is actually employed. A lot of people are also unaware of how stunning and varied they may be, in contrast to the bland, dark-green paddles of the conventional Aspidistra elatior of days gone by.
I adore the A sichuanensis ‘Ginga’ plant’s gorgeously speckled foliage, which has constellations of dazzling lemon yellow spots scattered across its dark green leaves. It grows in tidy clusters of narrow, blade-like leaves that like something out of the Amazon, yet in my experience, it can withstand extended lows of at least -10C without suffering any obvious damage. If you like speckles, “Milky Way” is extremely similar, except the patterning is creamy white rather than brilliant yellow. A sichuanensis ‘Chromatographic,’ which has yellow dots that are each surrounded by a halo of pale olive green before blending into the dark green, is the most amazing of all the dotted species in my opinion.
The tips of an elatior have the appearance of having been painted white, and they bleed through the leaf like tie-dyes, which can halt even a seasoned opponent of variegated plants (like me) in their tracks. Aelatior “Okame,” which is striped with ice-white, is another material I adore for its ability to reflect light in even the driest and darkest areas. Lacking flowers? A attenuata, also known as the “Dungpu Dazzler,” arrives with drifts of pale yellow stars that are right at ground level and are punctuated by slender, almost grass-like leaves.
