Aspidistra/spdstr/[2] is a genus of flowering plants that is endemic to eastern and southeastern Asia, mainly China and Vietnam. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and the Nolinoideae subfamily. [1][3] They flourish in the shade of bushes and trees. Their flowers also occur at ground level, where their leaves grow more or less directly. Since the 1980s, there has been a significant increase in the number of species known, with about 100 recognised as of July 2013[update]. The leafy house plant Aspidistra elatior is widespread around the world and is remarkably forgiving of neglect. It may be cultivated outside in the shade, where it and other species are typically hardy to 5 C. (23 F).
Light
It’s fairly simple to get the lighting requirements for an aspidistra just perfect. It can essentially cope with whatever light that is provided, as long as it isn’t direct sunshine.
Although generally hard to kill, it won’t endure sunlight (bright light is fine). So, strive for a window with a northward facing view or a bright, shady spot further within a room with other facing aspects.
Watering
Due to its cast-iron construction, the Aspidistra can tolerate dry soil and erratic, infrequent irrigation with ease. Although it’s not a cactus, this houseplant does require some water during the growing season in order to thrive, so you’ll need to let it dry out in between waterings.
Important: The soil should never be saturated or sodden; it should only ever be damp. Just enough is required in the winter to keep things running.
The demand for water will be much reduced if you’ve picked a dark or shaded environment for it to reside in, but take care not to go overboard as major overwatering will result in issues (see “Cast Iron Plant leaves turning yellow” for more).
It’s doubtful that you will need to water your plant more frequently than once every two weeks in low-light areas and if the temperature is generally colder, for instance during the winter. possibly even less. You should only water your plant after the earth has almost completely dried out, according to the guideline.
Feeding
Feed your plant with a typical strength houseplant feed solution once every two to three months during the growing season. You won’t need to do it much more than this because they are not heavy feeders.
Temperature
The ideal temperature range for a home is between 7C (45F) and 29C (85F), so you usually won’t need to worry about this. Given adequate shelter, these plants can survive outside growing conditions in temperatures as low as 10 C (14 F).
Do expect some dieback, and we don’t suggest putting Grandma’s 50-year-old plant in danger. When it gets colder, bring them inside.
Repotting
Repotting a cast iron plant should only be done extremely infrequently. Frequent repotting will kill the plant because it strongly opposes disturbance at its roots and likes receiving too much sun.
Repotting shouldn’t be done more frequently than once per year for young plants, and at most once per three to four years for adult Aspidistra. Use a pot that is just a little bit larger than the existing one and ordinary potting soil.
Propagation
When you repot your plant, you can propagate it by carefully and slowly separating the “clump.” Be sure to leave at least two or three stems in each division.
Despite having white, string-like roots, these houseplants are easier to handle and more robust than most. However, given that they are delicate and dislike being hurt, this may be deceiving. Therefore, it is preferable to try to divide your plant by hand, untangling the roots as you go, rather than cutting through them with a spade or knife.
Speed of Growth
For instance, only three or four new light green leaves, on average, are produced by ours each spring. Over the course of that particular growing season, these gradually enlarge and transform into the recognizable deeper green.
The growth cycle for that year ends when September rolls around since the springtime leaves are no longer discernible from the older ones.
Although it is typical for older Aspidistra leaves to become yellow and die off each year, once established and grown, the leaves do not alter from year to year.
Height / Spread
These plants typically have a maximum height and spread of no more than 1 m (3 ft). Realistically, many plants won’t ever grow so tall, thus 50 cm / 1.5 feet is about average.
Flowers
Yes, the Cast Iron Plant has blooms (see image). They lack odor and are unimpressive despite being quite scarce. Flowers arise from the ground and remain there because slugs, snails, and amphipods pollinate them in their natural habitat.
Although uncommon for an indoor plant, purple Aspidistra flowers are not unheard of.
Only one bloom is normally received at a time, and they typically each survive for a few weeks. Flowers can only be produced by mature plants, and there should be enough light.
Anything else?
True dust magnets, the huge paddle leaves. Although dusty leaves won’t harm the plant, they might make your plant look drab. To maintain your plant looking its best, wash the leaves every six months.
Are Aspidistra blooms uncommon?
The cast iron plants were placed close to the base of a giant oak tree’s trunk all around its base. These plants’ bases were concealed from view by a covering of oak leaves.
To remove the plants out of the ground, I edged my shovel around the plants and dug into the earth to break up the roots. The dirt was tough and challenging to dig through and did not readily give as it had been weeks since it had rained.
The cast iron plants consequently had very little dirt on them when they were removed from their bed, but they did have another surprise.
Several short, squishy, mushroom-shaped creatures with zigzag edges that were 3 inches long and covered with maroon spots were sprouting from the root/stem boundary. I know. Strange description, huh? But I can only describe things as best as I can in that way.
There were 3 to 4 of these things sticking out from the leaf stems in each plant clump. Was it a fungus? No, it seemed to be attached to and growing from the plant’s stem or roots. Was it infected with a fungus? For that, it looked to be too big. I finally pulled out my phone (which I always have with me while I garden) and looked it up on Google.
I discovered the strange growths from the leaves to be cast iron plant blooms (Aspidistra elatior). They are remarkably unusual.
I’ve shared my images with a few others since I found them, only to learn that these blossoms are extremely uncommon. Two horticulturists I spoke with, three others who have worked in the plant nursery industry for decades, and one researcher who researched cast iron plants have never seen these blossoms.
Is there a blossom on the Cast Iron Plant?
The long, stiff, pointed leaves of the cast-iron plant can endure temperature variations, dust, smoke, and other challenging environmental factors. The solitary, bell-shaped flowers are typically lilac, but may turn brown or green.
Should you give Aspidistra food?
Here are some additional pointers and details on the upkeep of Aspidistra plants:
- The “Cast Iron” moniker for these plants refers to their propensity to withstand adverse environmental conditions like poor lighting, freezing temperatures, dust accumulation, and other unpleasant circumstances. Aglaonemas are the only other indoor plants that can thrive under these conditions.
- Although Aspidistra plants are highly tolerant to unfavorable situations, they grow in ideal settings, therefore you shouldn’t intentionally place them in difficult environments. Under proper maintenance, it will seem more attractive and be healthier.
- The ideal temperature range for these plants is between 70 and 75 degrees F during the day and 50 to 55 degrees F at night. The ideal lighting range is 50 to 500 foot candles.
- Keep these plants evenly moist but not consistently wet is the best approach to water them. Even though it can tolerate forgone waterings, it’s preferable to provide them the proper attention.
- The Aspidistra plants flourish in top-notch garden soil when kept outside. It is ideal to grow them in manure-decayed soil. It’s also beneficial to amend the soil with up to 1/3 part peat or humus.
- It’s advisable to use a high-quality potting soil blend if you intend to keep them indoors. African violet-specific soil mixtures will function perfectly.
- Fertilization is necessary for aspidistra plants. Ideally, fertilize them every three to four months. Use a half-strength indoor plant fertilizer to fertilize when there is little light available. You can add fertilizer at high light levels once per month. Fertilization is crucial for the growth of your Aspidistra.
My Aspidistra may I place outside?
Few houseplants will withstand as much neglect as an aspidistra if you want a genuinely unbreakable houseplant. It can withstand more shadow than practically any other plant, in addition to months of drought, the coldest drafts, and nearly any insect. Therefore, the species was known as the “cast iron plant” in Victorian times.
But exactly how unbreakable is unbreakable? Well, I had a specimen that the mailman had left in a trash cabinet at my front door when I was testing out plants for one of the tropical gardens I designed for the Chelsea Flower Show. This was still in its sealed cardboard box when I eventually found it a month later, and it came out looking as though nothing had occurred. No other plant that I am aware of would survive this treatment without resembling wet mush or a dried-out skeleton.
Few people are aware that aspidistras have a surprising amount of cold endurance given their tropical appearance, which makes their robust constitution equally beneficial outside as it is indoors. Even though aspidistras are regarded to be reliably hardy species like fatsia, cordylines, and phormiums, estimates of the exact temperatures they can tolerate range greatly. However, I have seen aspidistras survive winters that have been devastating to these plants. This means that they are the ideal choice if you live in a more temperate area and have a protected garden that is afflicted by dry shadow, the gardener’s worst nightmare. Almost every modest urban plot I have seen has at least one area that fits this description (since surrounding walls not only produce a relatively sheltered microclimate, but they also function as a rain/sun shadow to create the location that is both sun-starved and extremely dry). It is thus surprising how seldom this genus is actually employed. A lot of people are also unaware of how stunning and varied they may be, in contrast to the bland, dark-green paddles of the conventional Aspidistra elatior of days gone by.
I adore the A sichuanensis ‘Ginga’ plant’s gorgeously speckled foliage, which has constellations of dazzling lemon yellow spots scattered across its dark green leaves. It grows in tidy clusters of narrow, blade-like leaves that like something out of the Amazon, yet in my experience, it can withstand extended lows of at least -10C without suffering any obvious damage. If you like speckles, “Milky Way” is extremely similar, except the patterning is creamy white rather than brilliant yellow. A sichuanensis ‘Chromatographic,’ which has yellow dots that are each surrounded by a halo of pale olive green before blending into the dark green, is the most amazing of all the dotted species in my opinion.
The tips of an elatior have the appearance of having been painted white, and they bleed through the leaf like tie-dyes, which can halt even a seasoned opponent of variegated plants (like me) in their tracks. Aelatior “Okame,” which is striped with ice-white, is another material I adore for its ability to reflect light in even the driest and darkest areas. Lacking flowers? A attenuata, also known as the “Dungpu Dazzler,” arrives with drifts of pale yellow stars that are right at ground level and are punctuated by slender, almost grass-like leaves.
Why are my Aspidistra’s tips turning brown?
Because of its reputation for withstanding a great deal of abuse and being as resilient as iron, Aspidistra is also known as the Cast Iron Plant. An Aspidistra can it be split?
called the “A traditional plant with sluggish growth but ease of cultivation is called Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior). It was a well-liked indoor plant during the Victorian era, when dwellings were frequently gloomy and drafty.
It is a perennial plant that is native to the Himalayas, China, and Japan. Living up to its cast iron moniker, it can tolerate drought, heat, cold, drafts, poor light, and even dust. Aspidistra is typically grown as a groundcover in the southern United States, but it is more popular as a bushy houseplant in our region because of its attractive leaf.
A member of the lily family, Aspidistra produces leaves that can reach a length of 24 inches and are long-lasting, glossy, leathery, and strap-like. Its main characteristic is its thick, evergreen leaves, but every so often, a little blossom may appear close to the plant’s base, at soil level. The blossom, which is a dark, bronzy crimson and grows directly on the soil’s surface, is oftentimes overlooked.
Deep shade can be tolerated by aspidistras, which can also be planted in a northern exposure. Although you can put your plant in a dimly lit area, it will grow more lushly if it is close to a window and out of the direct sunlight, which might damage the leaves. Although it can survive extremes, it prefers a temperature range of 50 to 55 degrees at night and 68 to 72 degrees during the day.
If this plant needs to be divided, it is advisable to do so in the spring before new growth begins because this plant thrives best when it is contained in a container. Aspidistras can be divided into two or more plants, just like any other plant with several stems emerging from the ground can, as long as each one retains some of the original root system and some top growth.
Shake the soil off the plant to reveal the roots after knocking it out of its pot. If the portions won’t separate easily with your hands, you might need to use a big, sharp kitchen knife to cut them apart. Before the roots can dry out, make a cut through the plant’s crown where the top growth and roots meet. Your new plants should be flourishing in a few months if you give them plenty of water.
Aspidistras benefit greatly from good drainage. Allow the soil surface to dry after watering. From early spring through early fall, fertilize established plants once a month; otherwise, skip this step. To groom, use scissors to remove any brown edges from the leaf tips.
An Aspidistra plant of her own would be something Barbara Hosie of the Annadale Garden Club remarked to a friend many years ago. This buddy had recently divided her plant, so she knew someone who had recently done so “Barbara and a young, rooted plant. In the summer, Barbara’s plant flourishes next to the garage in a shaded, screened-in area. In the winter, it is typically brought inside to the back porch, where it is a comfortable 55 degrees.
Barbara wants to divide her Aspidistra this spring since it has grown too crowded in its pot. Perhaps, like someone did for her, she will have an extra plant to give to a friend.
The leaves of an Aspidistra are also effective in cut flower arrangements and can last for several weeks, which is an added plus.
Aspidistra elatior “variegata, the variegated variety with creamy white stripes or larger cream bands along the margins and down the leaf stalks,” is one of the several variants of this plant.
Dwarf version Milky Way has black-green leaves with white spots on them.
The Cast Iron Plant can resist mistreatment and will survive some neglect, but with proper care, it will develop into a lovely plant with elegant, arched leaves. This slow-growing houseplant may seem a bit pricy to shoppers, but it’s well worth the money because it will provide you with years of beauty and pleasure.
