Aspidistra/spdstr/[2] is a genus of flowering plants that is endemic to eastern and southeastern Asia, mainly China and Vietnam. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and the Nolinoideae subfamily. [1][3] They flourish in the shade of bushes and trees. Their flowers also occur at ground level, where their leaves grow more or less directly. Since the 1980s, there has been a significant increase in the number of species known, with about 100 recognised as of July 2013[update]. The leafy house plant Aspidistra elatior is widespread around the world and is remarkably forgiving of neglect. It may be cultivated outside in the shade, where it and other species are typically hardy to 5 C. (23 F).
Light
It’s fairly simple to get the lighting requirements for an aspidistra just perfect. It can essentially cope with whatever light that is provided, as long as it isn’t direct sunshine.
Although generally hard to kill, it won’t endure sunlight (bright light is fine). So, strive for a window with a northward facing view or a bright, shady spot further within a room with other facing aspects.
Watering
Due to its cast-iron construction, the Aspidistra can tolerate dry soil and erratic, infrequent irrigation with ease. Although it’s not a cactus, this houseplant does require some water during the growing season in order to thrive, so you’ll need to let it dry out in between waterings.
Important: The soil should never be saturated or sodden; it should only ever be damp. Just enough is required in the winter to keep things running.
The demand for water will be much reduced if you’ve picked a dark or shaded environment for it to reside in, but take care not to go overboard as major overwatering will result in issues (see “Cast Iron Plant leaves turning yellow” for more).
It’s doubtful that you will need to water your plant more frequently than once every two weeks in low-light areas and if the temperature is generally colder, for instance during the winter. possibly even less. You should only water your plant after the earth has almost completely dried out, according to the guideline.
Feeding
Feed your plant with a typical strength houseplant feed solution once every two to three months during the growing season. You won’t need to do it much more than this because they are not heavy feeders.
Temperature
The ideal temperature range for a home is between 7C (45F) and 29C (85F), so you usually won’t need to worry about this. Given adequate shelter, these plants can survive outside growing conditions in temperatures as low as 10 C (14 F).
Do expect some dieback, and we don’t suggest putting Grandma’s 50-year-old plant in danger. When it gets colder, bring them inside.
Repotting
Repotting a cast iron plant should only be done extremely infrequently. Frequent repotting will kill the plant because it strongly opposes disturbance at its roots and likes receiving too much sun.
Repotting shouldn’t be done more frequently than once per year for young plants, and at most once per three to four years for adult Aspidistra. Use a pot that is just a little bit larger than the existing one and ordinary potting soil.
Propagation
When you repot your plant, you can propagate it by carefully and slowly separating the “clump.” Be sure to leave at least two or three stems in each division.
Despite having white, string-like roots, these houseplants are easier to handle and more robust than most. However, given that they are delicate and dislike being hurt, this may be deceiving. Therefore, it is preferable to try to divide your plant by hand, untangling the roots as you go, rather than cutting through them with a spade or knife.
Speed of Growth
For instance, only three or four new light green leaves, on average, are produced by ours each spring. Over the course of that particular growing season, these gradually enlarge and transform into the recognizable deeper green.
The growth cycle for that year ends when September rolls around since the springtime leaves are no longer discernible from the older ones.
Although it is typical for older Aspidistra leaves to become yellow and die off each year, once established and grown, the leaves do not alter from year to year.
Height / Spread
These plants typically have a maximum height and spread of no more than 1 m (3 ft). Realistically, many plants won’t ever grow so tall, thus 50 cm / 1.5 feet is about average.
Flowers
Yes, the Cast Iron Plant has blooms (see image). They lack odor and are unimpressive despite being quite scarce. Flowers arise from the ground and remain there because slugs, snails, and amphipods pollinate them in their natural habitat.
Although uncommon for an indoor plant, purple Aspidistra flowers are not unheard of.
Only one bloom is normally received at a time, and they typically each survive for a few weeks. Flowers can only be produced by mature plants, and there should be enough light.
Anything else?
True dust magnets, the huge paddle leaves. Although dusty leaves won’t harm the plant, they might make your plant look drab. To maintain your plant looking its best, wash the leaves every six months.
The cast iron plant has flowers, right?
Cast-iron Plant is a suitable moniker for the structure. This evergreen, which was widely employed as a houseplant in Victorian times and is currently grown outside as a ground cover for areas of extreme shade, is one tough cookie.
Aspidistra elatior (05) Landscape
Cast-iron plant is a wonderful ground cover plant that also makes a superb border plant.
This native of China is also known as the “iron plant” or “barroom plant,” and it has two-foot-long, dark-green leaves that are long, oval-shaped, and pointed.
To the amazement of many, the cast-iron plant Aspidistra elatior, a member of the lily family, actually blooms. However, because of how close to the ground its little purplish flower opens, it is frequently hidden by the leaves and scarcely noticed by most people.
Are Aspidistra blooms uncommon?
The cast iron plants were placed close to the base of a giant oak tree’s trunk all around its base. These plants’ bases were concealed from view by a covering of oak leaves.
To remove the plants out of the ground, I edged my shovel around the plants and dug into the earth to break up the roots. The dirt was tough and challenging to dig through and did not readily give as it had been weeks since it had rained.
The cast iron plants consequently had very little dirt on them when they were removed from their bed, but they did have another surprise.
Several short, squishy, mushroom-shaped creatures with zigzag edges that were 3 inches long and covered with maroon spots were sprouting from the root/stem boundary. I know. Strange description, huh? But I can only describe things as best as I can in that way.
There were 3 to 4 of these things sticking out from the leaf stems in each plant clump. Was it a fungus? No, it seemed to be attached to and growing from the plant’s stem or roots. Was it infected with a fungus? For that, it looked to be too big. I finally pulled out my phone (which I always have with me while I garden) and looked it up on Google.
I discovered the strange growths from the leaves to be cast iron plant blooms (Aspidistra elatior). They are remarkably unusual.
I’ve shared my images with a few others since I found them, only to learn that these blossoms are extremely uncommon. Two horticulturists I spoke with, three others who have worked in the plant nursery industry for decades, and one researcher who researched cast iron plants have never seen these blossoms.
Do I need to mist my Aspidistra?
Older leaves that turn yellow quickly are a telltale indicator of overwatering, which is typically brought on by insufficient light. Other symptoms of overwatering include moldy or heavy soil, stunted growth, and a decaying foundation. Despite the fact that this plant can thrive in darker environments, the frequency of irrigations must be decreased to avoid the possibility of root rot. People are unaware that plants’ roots also require access to oxygen; when soil is moistened, air rises and escapes the potting soil. They will eventually collapse during the next days as a result of a lack of readily available oxygen. To find out more about root rot and how to treat it, go on this link.
Low humidity will result in yellow haloes around browning leaf tips. Increase humidity to stop new growth from exhibiting these signs even if the plant won’t die from this. To provide your specimen a more stable atmosphere, spray once a week while the heaters are on or make your own humidity tray.
Dry spells that last for a long time will cause parts of the leaves to turn crispy brown. Before cutting it out with a fresh pair of scissors, let the damaged leaf completely brown over. Puncturing the fragile tissue could lead to bacterial infections later on. To reduce the chance of dehydration in the future, implement a watering schedule or pebble tray.
Lack of light results in the disappearance of variegations. Even though Aspidistra is a great choice for shaded areas, multicolored individuals will lose their variegations as a result. To enable the variegations to form on the new growth, move the plant to a brighter location with little direct sunlight. Simply skip this stage if you aren’t completely upset over the defeat. On the other hand, excessive sunshine is often the source of significant variegations that prevent the plant from producing chlorophyll (green pigmentation).
Similar to the Rabbit Foot Fern or Blue Star Fern, Aspidistra has a modified stem with rhizomes that extend just below the soil surface and include both its petioles and roots.
Origins
Using the Greek word for “shield” () and the genus name of Tupistra, in allusion to its foliar structure, John Ker Gawler originally described Aspidistra in 1822. Despite the initial classification, it was largely disregarded until the 1980s, when morphological research led to the correct placement from the Lilaceae family to the Asparagaceae.
During the Victorian era’s usage of gas-powered lighting, homes frequently had soot-covered surfaces and noxious gases that not only gave people headaches and nausea but also poisoned plants to the point of death. The only two plants that made it through this terrible period were Kentia Palms and the recently discovered Aspidistra, which, when seen in family photos, symbolize immense riches and fortune. Once the lighting became commonplace, many other plants from “The New World” were successfully grown in the homes, and their popularity soon faded. An underground “rhizome” that serves as a stem and houses the roots, stored energy, and petioles is where the foliage of an Aspidistra joins. In the spring and summer, the rhizomes can be multiplied via division or left to fill the pot.
There are two species of Aspidistra found in our homes today: the A. elatior, which is currently popular in retail, and the older, less well-known A. sichuanensis, which has thinner leaves than the former.
10 – 26C (50 – 80F) H1b (Hardiness Zone 12) – This plant can be cultivated indoors or outdoors in a protected area during the summer when temperatures are above 10C (50F). Avoid exposing this plant to direct sunlight if you decide to take it outside because it could cause sunburn and dehydration. Watch out for bugs frequently, especially while bringing it back inside.
Spread
Up to 0.6 m tall and 1 m wide, with the final height taking 3 to 8 years to reach. In the correct cultivation, each rhizome can generate up to three new leaves each season.
Pruning & Maintenance
To promote healthier growing conditions, remove yellow or decaying leaves as well as any plant detritus. Always use clean shears or tools when pruning to lower the risk of bacterial and fungal infections. Never cut through yellowed tissue as this could lead to severe harm from bacterial infections or other disorders. To avoid shocking the plant and resulting in decreased growth and a decline in health, always create clean incisions.
Rhizome Cuttings (Easy) – Select the strongest, oldest rhizomes that are free of injury or illness. Using two to four fronds within each rhizomatous section, this approach can be used from spring through early summer. Using a clean knife, make a direct cut below a node, separating its root systems from the remainder of the root ball. To ensure that the propagated rhizome has enough energy stored to continue developing, make sure it is at least 5 cm (2 inches) long. Place the rhizome sideways over a bed of moist compost that has “Houseplant” written on it. To keep the surrounding moisture in place and to encourage new development, sprinkle half a centimeter of earth onto the rhizome. This procedure could take up to a few weeks. For success, keep out bright sunshine and provide high humidity at temperatures between 15 and 59 degrees. After it has produced its second new leaf, handle it normally and according to the above care instructions!
The little purple rosette flowers on mature specimens, which emerge in spring or summer an inch above the soil line, are perennial. Botanists have been perplexed by its blooming process for many years due to its low growth rate, which contrasts sharply with the ideal height of typical flowers to draw in flying pollinators. If pollination is successful, tiny red berries with one or two seeds typically form in the flower’s urn. A domestically grown specimen has a possibility of blooming indoors; the ones that were just repotted in the middle of winter have the highest chance. The majority of flying insects that pollinate the flowers are fungus gnats.
Variegated Cultivars (Just a few of them!)
“Lennon’s Song” – The leaves of this plant have thin lime stripes slashed across them. Robin Lennon, who was born in Florida, originally chose and cultivated aspidistra plants in California.
“Asahi” is a white-tipped species with the usual Aspidistra green base and a mottled mixture of the two colors in between.
The cultivar “Okame” (syn. “Variegata”) was extremely well-liked by growers in the late 20th century. Compared to other variegated varieties, the foliage has broader leaves that are covered in vertical white bands from the tip to the rhizome.
An earlier Japanese cultivar called “Sekko-kan” has tiny white stripes across the top half of the leaf. When fully grown, some of the leaf-tips may completely turn white, much like the “Asahi” type. This variety is occasionally referred to as the “White Snowy Crown” Aspidistra.
The cultivars “Milky Way” and “Well Spotted” are members of the “Sichuanenis” group and have thinner leaves than the cultivars listed above (members of the “Elatior” group). Each yellow spot on the leaves is about 0.3 cm across the leaf and covers the entire surface. Below is an image of the Milky Way.
Kinboshi: This cultivar, which features yellow mottles like the “Milky Way,” has the added benefit of a lime halo covering each spot. With this type, the variegations frequently appear more strongly.
Another yellow-spotted variation is called “Stars & Stripes,” although in this cultivar, lime stripes are scattered across the leaf blade. Very difficult to come by in the UK.
