Crown rot has infected the planting if the ajuga, commonly known as bugleweed, suddenly wilts, yellows, and dies.
In warm, damp, or humid circumstances, this fungal disease is most common. In colder climates, it manifests as sudden wilting and dieback, while in warmer climates, it manifests as yellowing and death of plants. Infected plants’ stems turn brown or black and decay.
This disease is spread by tools and water and can be introduced into the garden on diseased plants or soil. It is tough to remove the disease because it is found in the soil.
Remove and destroy diseased plants and soil as soon as possible. During and after the process, disinfect your tools using a one-part bleach to nine-part water solution.
If the illness spreads or has destroyed much of the planting, it’s time to start over with disease-free plants in a different area.

What is killing my ajuga?
QUESTION: My lovely chocolate chip ajuga is being killed by something – might it be a fungus? The plants began to deteriorate from the outer leaves inward, with the heart of the plant dying last. On some of the roots, it appears that there is some white moldy stuff. Can you give me any advice on what I should do? I have a lot of it, and it was really stunning when it bloomed this spring. ANSWER: The Southern blight fungus causes a fungal root and crown rot in Ajuga (Ajuga reptans) (Sclerotium rolfsii). As a result, we tend to limit ajuga plants to small, minor areas that will not suffer too much damage if the disease strikes. All sick plants should be removed and disposed of. Any white moldy-looking material should be removed and discarded as well. The fungicide thiophanate-methyl, which is applied as a drench, may help slow the disease’s progression and prevent it from spreading further. Look for products like Bonide Infuse Systemic Disease Control Lawn and Landscape, Ferti-lome Halt Systemic Rose, Flower, Lawn, Ornamental Fungicide, or SA-50 Thiomyl Turf and Ornamental Systemic Fungicide, and carefully follow the label instructions.
Size & Growth
Individual plants normally reach a height of 3 to 4 inches with a spread of less than a foot tall.
These plants’ chocolate-colored leaves are a deep shade of brown with burgundy highlights.

Cut this groundcover all the way back to the ground once the flowers have finished blooming.
If you’re using Ajuga as a grass substitute, mow it on the highest setting on your mower.
Keep an eye out for non-variegated leaves if you have a variegated Ajuga.
Does ajuga need sun?
These plants can grow in any generally well-drained soil, and while they tolerate full sun, they develop more quickly in partial shade. Plant these perennials 6 to 12 inches apart in the spring or early fall. Remove old flower spikes by mowing or trimming them.
Can you grow ajuga in pots?
Ajuga is one of my favorite plants for pots and garden beds. It is resilient, fuss-free, and produces a large number of plants each season. Ajuga cultivated in containers is just as beneficial and brightens up a pot when other plants haven’t bloomed or have faded back. The vibrant color and cheerful small flowers can thrive in either shade or sun, giving you a variety of container alternatives for any setting.
Gardeners who enjoy ajuga in the garden will be pleased to learn that the plants can also be grown in limited pots. Even runner plants will flourish in a well-drained medium with plenty of organic matter.
Green leafy specimens and blooming perennials that haven’t blossomed yet will benefit from the splash of color and modest growth habit. Ajuga doesn’t compete with the brilliance of other plants once your container is fully bloomed. Instead, it draws attention to the tones and textures that are becoming more prominent as spring gives way to summer. The optimum season to grow ajuga in pots is in the spring, but in temperate climates, the plant can also be used to create a container garden in the fall.
What does petiole rot look like?
Petiole rot, formerly known as hosta crown rot, is one of the most terrifying fungus diseases for a hostaphile (passionate lover of all things hosta). The first reports of symptoms this season have begun to appear, therefore now is a good time to update Paula Flynn, former Extension Plant Pathology Diagnostician’s essay from July 2004.
The fungus Sclerotium rolfsii var. delphinii causes petiole rot, which is a highly devastating disease of hosta. Because the fungus has such a broad host range, it can cause problems on a variety of garden plants. On hostas, disease signs begin with marginal yellowing and browning of the leaves, beginning with the lower leaves. At the base of the petiole, a soft, brown, mushy rot can be visible, occasionally accompanied by white fungal threads. The leaves yellow and wilt as the disease spreads. The base of the petioles rots away in the last stages of the disease, and the leaves collapse and lay flat on the ground. Collapsed leaves are easy to remove from the plant’s crown.
At the base of affected petioles, the disease fungus forms little round fungal fruiting structures roughly the size of mustard seeds. When these structures, known as sclerotia, are young, they are a cream tint, but as they age, they turn a dark, brick red tone. Sclerotia are the fungus’s long-term survival structures. Sclerotia germinate in warm, humid conditions, and the fungus’ mycelium develops in the earth until it finds a plant that is susceptible.
A variety of strategies is required for effective management. Planting any questionable or symptomatic plants is not recommended. Plants from polluted beds should not be moved to other parts of the garden. Remove sick plants and carefully remove the surrounding soil to a depth of 6-8 inches, replacing it with non-contaminated soil. A mulch-free zone of several inches around the base of vulnerable plants may also be beneficial. Susceptibility to this disease varies by cultivar; some tolerant cultivars (less susceptible) include Halcyon, Honeybells, Snow Mountain, and Tall Twister. Lemon Lime, Munchkin, Nakaiana, Platinum Tiara, and Tardiflora are all susceptible varieties.
To help manage the disease, fungicides like flutolanil or thiophanate-methyl based fungicides like Cleary 3336 or Fungo are available, however they may not be widely available to the home grower. Fungicides for gardens and home cures like bleach are ineffective. To summarize, there are no simple solutions, and prevention is the best approach.
What does crown rot look like?
While dry rotting at or near the soil level can be seen on the crown or lower stem of plants infected with this disease, most other symptoms go unnoticed—until it’s too late. Rotting can start on one side of the plant or solely on lateral branches, then spread to the rest of the plant. Infected areas may appear discolored, usually tan or dark, indicating the presence of dead tissue.
The plant will begin to wilt and die as the crown rot spreads, with younger plants being more susceptible to death. Foliage may turn yellow or even reddish-purplish in color. Plant growth may be stunted in some circumstances, although the plants may still produce blooms, albeit in small numbers. Dark spots on the bark surrounding the crown of the tree may appear, with dark sap leaking from the sick area’s margins.
How do you prevent petiole rot?
Phytophthora species can be found all over the world, in both fields and woods. They are such a threat that their name literally means “threat.” “Plant killer.” Who said early mycologists didn’t know how to put on a show?
Crown rot is produced by these organisms, which are also known as oomycetes, and it affects tomatoes, eggplant, and other crops.
This disease thrives in moist soils, therefore the name “molds that grow in water.” They do not require a lesion in the plant to cause infection, unlike many other diseases. Seedlings can also be attacked, resulting in damping off.
Plants lose their energy as they age, and they may collapse and die. Discolored roots with chocolate brown lesions that can spread into the lower stem are typical.
The easiest strategy to avoid Phytophthora crown rots is to reduce the quantity of moisture in the soil. This can be accomplished by ensuring enough soil drainage prior to planting.
For bedding plants, aim for one to two feet of drainage. This can help minimize oversaturation of roots during the four to eight hours of exposure required for infection.
Raised beds are a fantastic alternative for ensuring proper drainage.
Also, group plants according to their water requirements. Strawberries, for example, demand regular, light watering, whereas tomatoes and melons require less frequent, deeper soaking.
Why are ajuga leaves curling?
Insects can harm ajuga plants, particularly ash leaf curl aphids and crown rots. The damage caused by Ash leaf curl aphids begins in May and June and continues throughout the season. The leaves of the ash tree curl and deform. Inside the leaves are small whitish woolly aphids that are 1/8 inch long.
