Bugleweed is used to treat excessive thyroid hormone levels (hyperthyroidism). Premenstrual syndrome, breast pain, agitation, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), and bleeding, particularly nosebleeds and excessive bleeding during menstruation, are also treated with it.

Recent research have shown that sarsaparilla possesses antibacterial properties. Over 60 distinct phenolic compounds extracted from sarsaparilla were studied in one study. The chemicals were tested against six different bacteria and one fungus. The investigation discovered 18 compounds with antimicrobial properties against bacteria and one molecule with antimicrobial properties against fungus.
Cancer
Sarsaparilla was found to have anticancer activities in cell lines from a variety of tumors as well as in animals in a recent study. Sarsaparilla’s anticancer effects have also been demonstrated in preclinical tests in breast cancer tumors and liver cancer. More research is needed to determine whether sarsaparilla can be used to prevent and treat cancer.

Does bugleweed lower TSH?
Plant extracts from the Lycopus (bugleweed) and Melissa officinalis (lemon balm) species have long been used as traditional medicines to treat hyperthyroidism1. In vitro investigations have indicated that extracts from bugleweed and lemon balm prevent TSH and Graves’ antibodies from stimulating thyroid hormone production1. Oral bugleweed extract changes extra-thyroidal T4 conversion in rats, according to an in vivo study2.
On 6/6/2016, a 64-year-old woman came in for a regular exam and was discovered to have a TSH of 0.01 mIU/L. The following month, tests revealed FT4 levels of 1.4ng/dL (0.8-1.8) and FT3 levels of 4.7pg/mL. (2.3-4.2). The TSI was raised to 275 percent (Normal).
Case 2: A 46-year-old woman with periorbital edema was referred to an ophthalmologist in July 2018 and diagnosed with thyroid eye disease. Palpitations and “jitteriness” were also on her list of complaints. Between August 2018 and February 2019, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and treated with methimazole (MMI), requiring doses of up to 10mg BID. She stopped using MMI in March 2019 because to transaminitis and started taking a thyroid tincture with bugleweed and lemon balm extract. On the herbal tincture, she has remained euthyroid, her transaminitis has resolved, and she has not required any additional anti-thyroid medicine. Her TSI was 0.84 IU/L (normal range).

Lemon balm’s anti-herpes and thyroid-regulating properties appear to be due to phenolic acids and other chemicals. Lemon balm has been shown to inhibit the attachment of antibodies to the thyroid cells that cause Grave’s disease in test tubes (hyperthyroidism). 2 In this disorder, the brain’s signal to the thyroid (thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH) is also inhibited, preventing the thyroid gland from activating itself further. Clinical investigations demonstrating lemon balm’s efficacy in treating Grave’s disease, however, are absent.
