Live oaks and sabal palms soar in the sky. The trails are lined with wild coffee, wax myrtle, and saw palmetto. Various fern species, the snowy orchid, and enormous air plants are among the flora that are protected.

The royal fern, cinnamon fern, and huge leather fern are common in the hydric hammock. These three protected plants were all used for profit.

In the interior of the hydric hammock, along oxbows and solitary wetlands, the giant leather fern can be found growing along the banks of the South Fork of the St. Lucie River.

Cinnamon and royal ferns are frequently found in dense stands beneath a closed canopy in certain regions of the hydric hammock.

The preserve’s moist flatwoods and other wet habitats are home to the snowy orchid, a terrestrial species. The snowy orchid has an endangered status according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The most prevalent bromeliads in the hydric hammock are common wild pine and enormous air plants. Due to the overexploitation of these two air plants by collectors and others, state lands now safeguard them.

Gopher tortoises live in habitats on uplands and consume a variety of plants. They create deep holes to hide in. They coexist in this burrow with more than 350 other species as a keystone species.

The gopher tortoise is considered endangered in Florida. State legislation protects both the tortoise and its burrow.

The South Fork of the St. Lucie River and the major canals in the preserve, most notably the Seawind Canal, are where you can find American alligators most frequently. During times of typical rain, alligators can also be seen in adjacent marshes within the preserve.

Due to the low boat traffic in the winter, the endangered Florida manatee can find safety here.

Atlantic Ridge Preserve is home to a number of protected birds. Be on the lookout for sandhill cranes hunting for food or bald eagles swooping overhead. Also keep an eye out for wood storks, white ibis, herons, and egrets. Swallow-tailed kites soar over the forest canopy in the summer.

Can you collect wild air plants?

Did you know that xerographica air plants were on the verge of extinction less than 25 years ago? The xerographica was so widely used in home design and is a must-have for serious air plant collectors! How was this possible to happen? Since the trade in Tillandsia (air plants) was mostly unregulated in the 1980s, it was possible to harvest xerographica and other tillandsia plants for commerce directly from the wild. The T. xerographica was thankfully listed as an endangered/protected species by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which prevented the export of air plants from South America for several years.

Moving forward, growers in South America were permitted to start spreading the xerographica under the careful supervision of CITES inspectors and local governments. As a result of these farmed xerographica plants, we started to see a resurgence of xerographica plants on the market in the 2000s. Did you realize that the miniature xerographica plants we sell are actually seedlings that are 4-5 years old? After blooming, the slow-growing xerographica plants often only produce two to three offsets, and these can take years to develop.

Growers in Guatemala are sometimes forced to keep one out of every three puppies or offsets that produce according to CITES regulations in order to promote the regrowth of mother plants. Additionally, in order to sell xerographica plants, growers must acquire licenses certifying that their plants were raised in nurseries rather than being foraged from the wild.

Additionally, Harrisii plants are listed as endangered by CITES. Growers must adhere to the same rules as they do with the propagation and trading of xerographica plants because these slow-growing plants were also virtually poached to extinction in the wild.

Volunteers have started saving and moving endangered wild Florida Tillandsia species, like the T. utriculata (wild pine, huge air plant) and the T. fasciculata, in Southeast Florida (cardinal air plant). Due to their vivid red flowers, cardinal air plants are among the most sought-after plants that illegal collectors attempt to take from Florida swamplands in the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Over the years, park rangers have detained a number of individuals who attempted to smuggle these and other plants out of the park, where they might eventually find up in backyard gardens and plant nurseries.

Second, refrain from harvesting Tillandsia in the wild. Don’t do it at all. Although it is cool to see an air plant or bromeliad tucked in a tree, we are aware that it might be rather enticing. However, even if it might look fantastic in your house, leave it in the wild where it belongs to grow and flourish.

Do air plants fall off trees?

Tillandsia recurvata, sometimes known as ball moss, is not the most well-known epiphyte. It is all too frequently considered an unattractive tree pest that has to be eliminated. This is the furthest thing from the truth. The trees on which it grows are unaffected by this resilient air plant. Additionally, because of its association with a certain bacterial species, it significantly contributes to soil fertility. Today, I want to extol the virtues of the tenacious Tillandsia recuvata.

The natural range of Tillandsia recurvata spans a sizable portion of the Americas, from southern United States to northern Argentina and Chile. T. recurvata can thrive in areas with infrequent below-freezing temperatures. The variety of habitat types this species may flourish in is one of its most amazing characteristics. This resilient small air plant thrives in both harsh desert settings and subtropical climates. Due of its tolerance for extreme temperatures, dry conditions, and high levels of air pollution, it has even begun to colonize metropolitan areas.

The management of photosynthesis by T. recurvata is one of its success factors. T. recurvata uses CAM photosynthesis, as is typical of the Bromeliaceae family of plants. T. recurvata opens its stomata at night to absorb CO2 when conditions are more hospitable, as opposed to opening them during the day when high temperatures and the blistering sun would cause uncontrollable rates of water loss. The organic acid that is created from this CO2 is then stored for usage when the sun rises the next day. T. recurvata can synthesize the necessary carbs by doing this while maintaining its stomata closed and conserving water.

T. recurvata doesn’t put on a particularly impressive floral display while in bloom, which I believe is one of the main reasons why it isn’t given the respect that many of its cousins do. At the tops of lengthy flower stalks, tiny purple to lavender petals just barely break through the bracts. Short-lived blooms are swiftly replaced by protracted, brown seed capsules. Eventually, these capsules break open, releasing a large number of small seeds, each of which is equipped with wispy filaments that enable them to benefit from even the slightest wind. I have discovered that those silky filaments have a tendency to mat up and stick to any surface they land on, despite the fact that the seeds themselves are small and don’t exhibit many adaptations for attaching to suitable substrates. As a result, seeds on anything from twigs to power wires to other Tillandsias at least have an opportunity to germinate.

Ball moss is the common name given to this species, while the scientific term “recurvata” refers to both its style of growth and its ability to colonize other members of its own genus. As a leaf expands, it folds backward, giving the individual plants a spherical form. These colonies can resemble huge, globular balls as more and more seedlings sprout on and around one another. Because of this, many people have categorized this species as a parasite, yet this is not the case at all. Contrary to popular belief, these plants do not weaken the trees on which they are grown.

T. recurvata appreciates a lot of sunlight, like many other epiphytes do. As a result, plants typically thrive near the tips of branches or at the tops of trees. This can undoubtedly result in some shading for the trees on which they grow, but this is negligible when you consider how much a tree’s own branches and leaves can shade the parts of the trunk that are lower down. Additionally, T. recurvata are quick to colonize branches that have already died or lost their leaves. This frequently happens when the tree is dying back because the plants have taken over. T. recurvata colonies are actually only a symptom of a tree that is already under stress from other sources. More air plants are able to locate suitable habitat for germination and growth as the canopy begins to thin. Instead of the other way around, trees covered in T. recurvata were already sick or dying.

In fact, research suggests that T. recurvata serve as a significant nitrogen source for the ecosystem. T. recurvata contain specific Pseudomonas bacteria, which can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere directly, inside their tissues. These bacteria give their host air plant a nitrogen boost that would not otherwise be accessible in exchange for a place to reside. T. recurvata frequently detach from the surface they are growing on, and when they do, they fall to the ground, decompose, and add a boost of nitrogen to the soil. As a result, these beautiful epiphytes actually promote the growth of many other plant species in addition to those of their hosts.

This species’ takeover of the human environment is probably its most amazing achievement. T. recurvata can be found thriving on man-made objects like power lines throughout its area. It is amazing how well T. recurvata can tolerate air pollution for a species that obtains all of its needs from the atmosphere. The hardiness of this air plant has drawn the interest of numerous researchers. In fact, some consider T. recurvata to be a particularly interesting choice for the development of green roofs in warmer areas.

Overall, this is among the toughest plants you will find in the Americas. T. recurvata colonies should be regarded with admiration and respect rather than contempt. We battle against these species for all the wrong reasons when, in fact, we need to be welcoming them as vital ecosystem survival. Do air plants allow for contact?

Watering is one of the hardest skills to master while learning how to take care of air plants. Typically, air plants require weekly watering. Despite what you may have been told, air plants typically don’t absorb enough water from their surroundings to stay hydrated. You must water your air plants unless you reside in a very humid area (such as a jungle).

You may need to water your air plants twice a week if your environment is really dry, such as inside during the winter, but once a week is a decent general rule. It’s more probable that you may harm your air plants from too much water than from not enough, so be careful not to overwater them.

To Water Air Plants by Submersion

Pour filtered or bottled water into a bowl at room temperature (not hot or cold as it will startle them). The air plants should be submerged underwater for 30 to 1 minute, removed, and let to air dry on paper towels or clean kitchen towels for an hour. Returning them to their holder when they’ve largely dried out.

You might think, “Well, if a little water is nice, a lot of water is better, so I’ll simply keep my air plants in the water for a little longer and when I think about it, I’ll pull them back out.” Avoid doing this. This was my old technique as a slack gardener and air plant killer. Air plants don’t need much water, and if they are submerged for more than a minute, they will die.

To Water Air Plants by Spraying

Use a spray container that has never been filled with chemicals and fill it with room temperature filtered or bottled water. Turn the spray nozzle so that only a very fine mist emits. Every two to three days, gently mist your air plants with water.

Just don’t drink tap water. And if you must, leave it out in a dish for at least 24 hours before putting your air plants in it so that any chlorine residues can drain off. Chlorine is harmful to all plants, but it is particularly harmful to these delicate, adorable little air plants.

Handling Your Air Plants

When handling these small, delicate plants, always be gentle. Many plants can tolerate being handled by humans, but air plants cannot. Try to avoid touching them, and when you do, avoid crushing or bending any of their pieces.
