Ball moss is an epiphyte, or a plant that grows on the surface of another plant and gets its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water, or detritus that collects around it. Epiphytes include Spanish moss and lichen, which are both safe and beautiful.
Is moss an air plant?
Epiphytes, such as moss, are “air” plants that rely on atmospheric moisture and nutrients to exist. Spanish moss, ball moss, and lichen are common epiphytic plants in the Florida landscape and the southeast United States. People who are unfamiliar with epiphytes are sometimes concerned that they would harm plants. Plants that live on other plants but do not harm them are known as epiphytes. Epiphytes, sometimes known as air plants, adhere to the bark of its host plants to get access to sunlight or avoid competition on the ground. Spanish mossnot a real moss, but a member of the bromeliad familyis the most common epiphyte in Florida.
Another myth about Spanish moss is that it is home to a biting insect known as a chigger or redbug. These species’ natural habitat is primarily low, moist places with dense natural flora. Chiggers can be found in fallen moss and any plant material on or near the ground, but moss on trees hanging above the ground rarely does.
Many creatures seek refuge in the thickets of Spanish moss for shelter. Insects and other invertebrates hide in Spanish moss and breed there. Two species of bats use Spanish moss garlands as daytime resting areas. At night, zebra longwing butterflies roost in it. Many birds use strands of moss to construct their nests.
While epiphytes can grow on wires, fences, and other non-living objects, they are well suited to growing on living structures.
Can I grow ball moss indoors?
Mine are grown indoors near an East-facing window, don’t require any special temperatures, and benefit from a heavy misting two or three times a day, although they can survive with a lot less water. If you forget to water it for a day or two, a week, or even a month, don’t worry!
How do you take care of an Air moss ball plant?
Tillandsia Recurvata is a relatively simple plant to grow. They’re offered as houseplants and used as decorative elements in living rooms.
When you remove a plant from its native habitat and bring it into your home, it requires special attention. You can, however, assist this air plant bloom in your house with a little time and work.
Water
Most air plants’ watering requirements are determined by the environment in which they are kept. If you reside in a hot, dry region, misting may not be enough to keep your plants hydrated.
Soak the Tillandsia Recurvata in water once a week for 30-60 minutes during active growth. Shake out any excess water caught between the clusters of leaves after removing the plant from the water bath.
Allow it to dry entirely in indirect sunlight or on a towel. To avoid rotting and fungal growth, dry the plant thoroughly in the next 4 hours.
If you reside in a dry area, you can mist or spray the plant during regular watering. If you’re going to leave the plant alone for more than two weeks, bathe it in a water bath for 12 hours before leaving. When you return, soak it for another 12 hours.
It is recommended to water your air plant using rain, pond, or spring water. However, you can use filtered or tap water for Tillandsia Recurvata.
Wait for the chlorine in the water to evaporate before proceeding. This will take a few days, so prepare ahead of time.
Light
Tillandsia Recurvata thrives in bright, filtered light, but avoid direct sunlight. A translucent blind can be used to filter the sunlight for your air plant.
If you want to take the plant outside, gradually increase the amount of sunlight it receives. Its leaves can be burned if it is moved from indoors to direct sunlight.
Temperature
Temperatures between 10 and 32 degrees Celsius are ideal for Tillandsia Recurvata. In a warm climate, this Tillandsia species thrives. It also necessitates adequate air circulation and a moderate to high humidity level.
What can you do with ball moss?
For many years, John has witnessed ball moss infestations in oaks and Texas persimmons, and he believes that ball moss might weaken and possibly destroy trees. Ball moss attaches itself to the stems and branches it grows on by tendrils that encircle them. The tendrils tighten their grasp over time, restricting circulation in the host plant. Furthermore, John argues that thickets of ball moss stifle bud development.
Whether or not ball moss is harmful to the trees and plants that it grows on, this bromeliad has its advantages. In the realm of birds, I once witnessed four Carolina wren fledglings leaving their nest. It was late in the day, and I was wondering if they’d be able to make it through the night. Ball moss has a monetary worth. Steve Lowe, Kendall County Park Naturalist, used to sell ball moss for ten cents a clump to the Michigan Bulb Company in Ann Arbor when he was younger. Many in Texas would have paid to get rid of what others in Michigan were buying, but Steve didn’t indicate whether he made money on both ends of the deal.
Ball moss is unlikely to harm healthy trees, although it does make them ugly in the view of many people. However, what some people find unsightly in an oak tree may be attractive to others. Ball moss is another interesting native plant that has a place in the local ecosystem, in my opinion. Even though the many tree trimmers who stop at our house shake their heads in amazement, I’m sure certain birds appreciate that attitude.
Can you put moss with air plants?
They require a lot of light, especially in colder climates. Place them in your home’s brightest spot. They do not, however, require direct sunlight. The nicest rooms have windows that face south or east. While some direct sunlight is acceptable, avoid a hot western exposure or long periods of time in direct sunshine. Because they are more humid than other rooms, bright bathrooms and kitchens are ideal locations for air plants.
Once a week, submerge your air plant upside down for 15 to 20 minutes to water it. Make sure to soak all of the leaves. Shake the water out of the leaves once they’ve been bathed, then hang them to dry in a well-ventilated place.
If your house has a low humidity level, spraying the leaves a few times a week, in addition to soaking, will protect the plant from drying out. When leaves become too dry, they wrinkle or roll up.
Bromeliad fertilizer, diluted, can be used to feed air plants (17-8-22). In the soaking or misting water, add the fertilizer.
Sphagnum moss should not be used to surround an air plant. The moss retains too much moisture, which might lead to decay.
Air plants can be grown in the open air. If the humidity is low, they may need to be watered more frequently. Just keep them out of the sun for a few hours. It’s recommended to use indirect lighting.
Tillandsias are popular in terrariums, although they aren’t recommended for those that are entirely enclosed or have a lot of humidity. They’re usually glued or wired to wood, stone, or cork and placed on a shelf or hung on the wall.

Is it Moss from Spain?
This air plant, which is neither Spanish nor moss, is a Bromeliad that is endemic to the southern United States, Central and South America, and parts of the Caribbean. It has been used as far north as Virginia and as far west as Texas in the United States. It was given the moniker “Spanish Beard” by French explorers because it resembled the beards of Spanish Conquistadors. That name was eventually changed to Spanish Moss, and we now know it as an air plant that looks great in arrangements or on its own.
Is ball moss the same as Spanish moss?
Ball moss is a type of moss that can be found on trees and utility lines. It’s not a real moss; it’s more closely linked to pineapples and ornamental bromeliads.
Although ball moss and Spanish moss are closely related, ball moss has a roundish “ball” shape, and Spanish moss tends to hang down like a “old man’s beard.”
Ball moss (Tillandsia recurvata) is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on other plants but does not use their nutrients. Ball moss’ “hold fasts” or “pseudo roots” bind it to the surface it grows on. False roots, unlike actual roots, do not absorb water or nutrition. Ball moss, like other bromeliads, absorbs water and nutrients from the air through its leaves and stems. Bromeliads are known as “air plants” because of this trait.
Ball moss thrives in low-light, low-air-flow, and high-relative-humidity environments. Under the cover of many shade trees, such situations can be found. The majority of the foliage on trees grows near the ends of limbs, leaving the interior of the canopy barren. Ball Moss thrives in the big internal limbs of live oaks and other large trees because of this.
Although ball moss is endemic to southern Texas, it is spread throughout the state on transplanted trees. Mild winters, such as those seen in the late 1990s, aided the establishment of these transplanted populations of ball moss and expanded the range of ball moss to new places. Ball moss is propagated locally by windblown seed.
Homeowners should not be alarmed if they notice a lot of ball moss growing on a dying tree. The tree is not being “killed” by ball moss. Ball moss is not a parasite, and it does not deplete the nutrients of the tree it grows on.
Ball moss infestations are thought to induce shadowing of lower limbs, increased limb breakage due to greater weight, and reduced production of new shoots, according to some experts. These are small points to be concerned about.
Ball moss has the most noticeable ornamental effects on landscape trees. Ball moss is preferred by certain homeowners, who see it as adding “character” to the tree. Ball moss, according to some homeowners, detracts from the tree’s inherent attractiveness. The decision to control ball moss is based on the homeowner’s own preferences and whether the labor and money are worth it.
Mechanical removal is one method of controlling ball moss. Manually or with a high-pressure water spray, this can be done. If manual removal is required, take the necessary safety precautions. Hot water is not suggested when using high-pressure water since it can harm the tree.
Ball moss can be killed by fungicides that contain copper. Copper-containing fungicides Kocid e 101, 4.5LF, DF, and 2000 are currently labeled for ball moss control on live oak and, in most cases, pecan trees. When ball moss is actively developing in the spring (March and April), fungicide should be administered, and all label directions must be strictly followed. Even if the ball moss is dead, it will not fall off the tree right away. Over the course of the year, it will gradually fade away.
Drift can be a concern when using a copper-containing fungicide, and it gets worse as the size of the trees being treated grows. Kocid e could harm ornamentals growing beneath sprayed trees, and the substance could react with metal surfaces like autos, lawn furniture, and roofing. Copper fungicides produce a blue stain on anything they come into touch with, therefore be cautious when spraying near structures or other surfaces.
What kills ball moss?
Combine baking soda and water in a bowl. For every gallon of water, you’ll need 1/2 pound of baking soda. If you use 10 gallons of water, for example, you’ll need five pounds of baking soda. Fill a sprayer halfway with the mixture and spray all around the tree where ball moss is present.
If the foregoing methods have failed, use a copper fungicide. Copper fungicide is available in garden supply stores and on gardening websites. Spray the fungicide on the ball moss-affected areas. However, this procedure can take years for the ball moss to fall off.
Is ball moss invasive?
Marimo moss balls, which were found to be contaminated with zebra mussels, are made of a green algae (Aegagropila linnaei) that is molded into a ball and measures 2 to 5 inches in diameter. Home aquariums, terrariums, and water gardens all use moss balls. These moss balls could be purchased in every state (except Hawaii) before the mussel contamination was discovered through national retail chains, small independent stores, and online marketplaces.
The species is primarily found in Northern Europe and a few locations in Japan. It has only been found in North America and Australia on a few occasions. The moss ball isn’t found to be invasive in any way.
Other moss balls available at aquarium stores, such as Java moss, may be real mosses (Vesicularia dubyana). The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is unaware of any zebra mussel introduction risks associated with this moss species. Artificial plastic moss balls are also widely available in stores and online, and they should not be a source of zebra mussels.
What are zebramussels, and why should they be found in moss balls be a cause for concern?
Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are one of North America’s most dangerous invasive species. They’re a fingernail-sized freshwater mollusk native to Eastern Europe’s Black, Caspian, and Azov Seas. Once established, zebra mussels can achieve exceptionally high densities and swiftly take over a waterbody, causing substantial environmental and economic harm. Among the possible consequences are:
- modifying the chemistry of the water, which can lead to increased blue-green algal outbreaks or an unpleasant taste;
- water intake structures, delivery systems, and other infrastructure are clogged; and
Live mussels carried by the moss balls may escape or be released into a canal, which is a major problem. Despite the fact that zebra mussels have established themselves in a number of waterbodies around the United States, there are still many uninfested waters that need to be protected. Failure to prevent an invasion of zebra (and quagga) mussels in the Pacific Northwest, for example, is expected to cost more than $500 billion a year.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) validated an allegation from a Seattle pet store that zebra mussels were attached to and inside moss balls on March 2, 2021. This report was added to the Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database after confirmation, and the Washington State aquatic invasive species management and the US Fish and Wildlife Service were alerted.
