It all comes down to watering, or more specifically, drainage, when an air plant is dying of rot. Although they do not like to stay wet, air plants need to be watered by misting or soaking in water. The plant needs to be given time to dry after being soaked or misted. Fungus takes hold and the plant dies if the plant’s center is left damp.
Regardless of how you water your air plant, after you’re done, make sure to tilt the plant so that water can drain and give it about four hours to fully dry off. This can be done using a dish drainer or by turning the plant over onto a dish cloth.
Although different types of air plants require varied amounts of watering, none of them should be immersed for extended periods of time. Last but not least, to promote adequate airflow and lessen the possibility of an air plant going bad, if your air plant is in a terrarium or other container, leave the lid off.
How can a dead air plant be revived?
Why keep dying my air plants? It’s likely that your Tillandsia is really thirsty if it doesn’t appear its best, especially if it’s shriveled or discolored. Spritzing normally doesn’t give enough moisture to keep the plant healthy and hydrated, despite the fact that misting the plant is frequently advised.

The simplest way to do this is to submerge the entire plant in lukewarm water in a bucket or basin. Lack of Air Circulation
Different species of air plants may experience problems from too much or too little water or sunlight, but there will never be a “perfect” amount of either “excessive air.
Poor ventilation and insufficient airflow will result in “in air plants, dry rot. Air plants will experience dry rot if there is insufficient airflow since they won’t be able to absorb the necessary nutrients from air particles.
When you place air plants in closed terrariums or containers, this issue arises. The dry rotting of an air plant will begin at the base and spread to other sections if you place it inside a pot, an urchin, or any other small, air-tight container.
Temperature and humidity can be maintained with the aid of proper ventilation. Air plants shouldn’t be kept in confined spaces, closed terrariums, or small spaces. They produce a wet and humid atmosphere inside. The lack of a chance for the air plant to fully dry out will encourage wet rot.

Improper Lighting

All air plants require at least six hours of indirect sunshine each day. They can be placed 13 feet or less from windows that face east, west, or south. Install artificial lighting within 12 feet of the air plant if your home doesn’t receive enough natural light.
Improper Temperature
The majority of air plants originate in warm, dry or humid climates. They can’t stand the cold, especially below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (5 C). They grow susceptible to rotting if they experience even a light frost.
Some air plant species, such as the Tillandsia usneoides, have adapted to survive in subfreezing conditions, but not all air plants have done so.
The best temperature range for the majority of air plants, especially those used in commerce, is between the 60s and 80s. During the winter, you shouldn’t put them close to windows or near air conditioning vents. Bring your plants inside if you keep them outside and the temperature drops during the winter where you live.
The wetness on their leaves can grow too chilly at night and cause rotting, so make sure they are dry before it gets cold.
Toxins
Rotting can also be brought on by harmful compounds found in water, food, or the environment:
- Water softening systems typically use sodium chloride in place of calcium and magnesium ions to produce soft water. Although these salts are safe for us, they can make air plants decay. Because they lack soil to filter out salts, air plants absorb them through their leaves. At the extremities of the leaves, the salts will accumulate and restrict the pores’ ability to absorb nutrition.
- Copper: Copper is extremely allergic to air plants. Look around their environment for any copper accents. You may have used copper-containing wires to fasten them in place. Copper is present in some varieties of pressure-treated wood. It’s possible that the fertilizer you’re applying contains copper.
- The majority of common plant fertilizers often contain zinc and boron. Before feeding your air plants, examine the components.
- Smoke: Because the air plants’ leaves can take in air molecules, they can also take in smoke particles, which can poison them and make them rot. Keep all smoke away from your air plants.
- Rust can cause rotting, so look for it in the containers and ornaments that the air plant is in contact with.
Fertilizers

Additionally, avoid overfertilizing your air plant because this could result in fertilizer burn. With the water you use to spritz or immerse the air plant, dilution the fertilizer as directed. Pests
The least likely cause of your air plant’s decay is a pest illness, especially if you keep them indoors. There are three main pest species that might harm your air plant and make it rot:
Mealybugs
You’ll see a white, cotton-like substance coating the leaves if your air plant has mealybugs. They lack wings and have tiny white bodies. The air plant’s leaves become pale and yellow and fall off as a result of their rapid multiplication and consumption of the fluids or sap.

To suffocate the insects, you can also submerge the plant. Clean the air plant with insecticidal soap or ivory dish soap to get rid of any bugs.
- Utilize ladybugs as natural predators to eradicate the pest colonies. Air plants are not harmed by ladybugs, and they like devouring pests. Either purchase them from stores or make an effort to draw them to your garden. Grow aromatic geraniums, dill, cilantro, fennel, tansy, and other herbs and flowers to entice them.
- Herbs typically don’t attract pests because of their potent natural perfume, according to a culinary herb garden. Similar to air plants, most herbs need sunny locations with indirect sunshine. Consider planting a herb garden next to where you keep your air plants, either inside or outside your home.
- Neem Oil: Spray neem oil on the diseased leaves’ surface. The pests will be gradually poisoned, which will support their further growth.
- All-Natural Insecticides: You may prevent and eliminate pests without endangering yourself or the air plants by using natural insecticides like Diatomaceous Earth, or DE. You should sprinkle this stuff on the plants since it resembles power.
- Alcohol: To get rid of bugs, soak a piece of cotton or a towel in rubbing alcohol before wiping it on the leaves.
Before returning the sick plant to its former location, keep an eye on it for a few weeks to prevent re-infestation.
Can you revive a dead air plant?
Most people will at some point in their adventure of cultivating tillandsias wonder how to revive their air plants. Finding the source of the problem is the first step in saving any air plant. After that, you can take the necessary steps to address the issue that is harming your air plant.
Your air plant may occasionally start to seem very white or gray. A naturally green air plant that is going very white or gray could be an early symptom of your air plant drying, even though it is typical for your air plants to be covered in a coat of white or gray hair or trichromes in most circumstances.
When your air plant becomes extremely white or gray, the good news is that it is not dying. When the air plant is dehydrated, the trichromes are simply becoming more noticeable and making the plant appear paler than usual.
