Plants that are either overwatered, underwatered, or even plants that aren’t getting enough light frequently get rot. The leading cause of rot is excessive watering. Rot is frequently to blame if the base of your air plant feels soft and mushy to the touch or if you can easily take the leaves off the base. Even air plants are capable of internal rot. You can have a plant that appears to be healthy one day, but the next it might come apart totally. Typically, internal decay is at blame. So what steps can you take to stop rot? The most important thing is to not overwater your plants. Most air plants only require weekly, and occasionally even less, watering. Never let your air plant remain on damp moss or submerge it in water for an extended amount of time in a terrarium. Shake off any extra water from your plants’ leaves after watering to prevent rot from occurring in the plants’ roots. Under-watering can also cause air plants to dry up or rot, which is a major problem. There is a widespread misperception that because these creatures are known as “air plants,” they don’t need much, if any, water. Online, it’s common to find inaccurate information regarding how frequently to water air plants, with many people claiming that they just require misting or monthly watering. It’s not like that at all! It’s important to water air plants at least once a week because they require enough water to live. It’s acceptable to occasionally forget to water your air plant, but avoid making it a habit. Lack of light is one of the most frequent causes of death in air plants. Since the majority of air plants are from tropical regions and some even thrive in more intense sunlight, they don’t thrive in low light environments. You may notice that the color of your air plant is fading and that it frequently becomes floppy or wilts if it isn’t receiving enough light. We advise placing your plants on display in an area that gets indirect light at least 4-6 hours a day. Frequently, you can do this outside, by a window, or even in a light room.

Your air plants’ growth, blossoming, and pup production can all be encouraged with fertilization. However, excessive fertilization will burn your air plants’ leaves and kill the plant. Because they love to reside in an environment with high air circulation, air plants received their name for a reason. Light

Dappled shadow or half-day sun is fine throughout the spring and summer, but plants can gradually adjust to greater light levels, especially the species with silver leaves. Water

Air plants can be misted, wetted, or submerged in water by running them under the faucet. Although tap water can still be utilized with a modest amount of fertilizer added, rainwater is always preferable for your plants because it contains more trace elements and nitrogen. Tillandsias want gentle tap water; harsh water is not good for them. I’ve discovered that watering is best done in the morning so that the plants may dry out over the day. Wet plants cannot perform photosynthesis as well as dry ones. Plants with grey or silver leaves must totally dry out in between waterings. Because of their propensity to decay if kept wet for too long, several densely trichomed, silver/grey species, like T. xerocraphica, tectorum, etc., benefit most from light misting. If the air flow is good, you should mist your plants thoroughly and give them a nice soak. Your plant will start drying out in a couple of hours under ideal circumstances. In general, you should water your plants three to four times per week during the spring, summer, and autumn and just once per week during the winter. If the edges of your plant’s leaves begin to curl inward, this could be a sign that it needs more water, therefore you should increase your watering schedule.

Air circulation

This is crucial for the wellbeing of your tillandsias, particularly after they have been watered. Tillandsias depend on air movement to survive, so growing these plants well is essential.

When watering plants, you can arrange plants near windows or vents that can be opened, or if you’re in a greenhouse or conservatory/porch, you can use a tiny fan that’s possibly on a timer. Plants will receive all the air movement they require if they are placed outside.

The species with smoother, greener leaves, like T. flabellata or T. cyanea, can tolerate lower air movement and a more humid environment, whereas the species with finer leaves and those with silvery leaves and numerous visible trichomes/hairs, like T. tectorum or T. funkiana, require the best air movement.

Fertiliser

I use a seaweed-based product to feed my Tillandsia plants throughout the year (except in the winter when light levels and temps are lower). This is used around every third watering, which in the summer can be up to twice a week, and is diluted at half the recommended quantity in my spray bottle/mister.

Indoor cultivation

Tillandsias thrive indoors, so find a room or window with lots of natural light. For the majority of species, east, south, or west facing sites are ideal. While many species of plants can withstand very high temperatures, they can still be cooked, especially if there is a lack of air movement. Be careful to place your plants away from heaters like radiators as this dry heat can dehydrate your plant. You should also be careful that your plant is not getting too scorched behind a glass window. When growing plants inside, it’s important to take extra care to prevent overwatering. After watering, you may always gently shake off any remaining moisture. Tillandsias are most prone to rot if water is left in the center of the rosette for an extended period of time.

Outdoor cultivation

Your Tillandsia will like spending time outside where it will receive ideal airflow, extra moisture from rain, humidity, and morning dew that evaporates. It is also best to leave your plants outside if you are going on vacation in the spring, summer, or fall so they can survive on their own for several months, or even the entire year, or at least until the temperatures start to drop in the winter.

Pests and diseases

Tillandsias are often free of diseases and pests. On rare occasions, they may come under attack by mealybug insects and spider mites.

You will need a magnifying lens to spot spider mites because they are so tiny, but you may see extremely minute yellow patches on your plant’s leaves and very fine webbing in the spaces in between the leaves.

Mealybugs are tiny insects that you can find in the center of your plant or at the base of the leaves. They are wrapped in what looks like white cotton. Regular and thorough inspection of your plants is the greatest approach to ensure that they are free of pests. You can do this by looking between the leaves, down into the leaf bases, and in the plant’s center.

These insects are frequently deterred by giving your plant a good few hours soaked in water many times per week, followed by very thorough drying. Additionally, plants can be cleaned with a cotton bud dipped in a solution of rubbing alcohol. Or effective use of non-soap based pesticides is possible.

Over or Under WateringYes, air plants do need water!

You might be underwatering your air plant. Depending on how much water it consumes, some plants, like Aeranthos or Tenuifolia, exhibit a dramatic curl. However, species like lonanthas might not exhibit such a significant alteration. Additionally, air plants might perish from being overwatered. Before being drenched in water once more, plants should be completely dried. Returning your plant to an enclosed area before it has completely dried out can also cause it to rot from moisture, so stay away from these situations to keep your plant healthy!

Exposure to Salt and Chemicals

If you have plants in pots inside your home and over time you’ve seen a white crust forming, your municipal water probably contains a lot of salts and chlorine that have been added. These additives appear in air plants as a white crust along the tips of the plants’ leaves. In Ionanthas, you might detect tiny salt crystals dangling from the ends of the leaves, which is particularly visible. Since air plants don’t grow on soil and don’t filter salt, they are particularly vulnerable to its negative effects. The air plant can get suffocated as a result of the salt that builds up on its leaves and inhibits water and nutrient absorption. It is not recommended to use municipal water to hydrate your plant because it frequently contains salt deposits. Heat and Light Exposure

If air plants are exposed to hot, direct sunshine, they may become dehydrated. Even the leaves of your plant can burn when you’re sitting near a hot window or in a warm environment. If you feel at ease in those surroundings, you may easily tell if those conditions are ideal for your plant. Most tillandsia plants thrive best in temperatures between 55 and 85 degrees. Xerographica, Harisii, and Stricta are a few examples of plants that can withstand higher temperatures. They are referred to as Xeric plants. Similar to this, air plants can also suffer from inadequate lighting. Your plant need intense artificial light or indirect natural light for several hours each day. Plants that are left in your house’s darker areas will likely have considerably shorter lives than those that get the right quantity of light.

Extreme Temperatures

Despite the fact that many air plants naturally grow at high altitudes, it is unlikely that they will survive at temperatures below zero. Usually, air plants cannot tolerate any temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. There are rare exceptions to this rule, such as the Spanish moss, which can endure temperatures as low as 20 degrees and is found from Texas to Florida. However, it is likely that air plants that are sold commercially wouldn’t endure these chilly conditions. Fertilizer Burn

Your air plants may burn if you fertilize them too frequently or with a high quantity of fertilizer. Once a month, we advise bathing plants in fertilizer water that has been diluted with water from your fertilizer. Simply add fertilizer to your regimen if you’d rather spray your plants with water than soak them. Before spraying your plants with fertilizer, take care to carefully combine and dilute the fertilizer.

Moisture and Poor Air Circulation

Some air plants enjoy high humidity, but the majority prefer chilly, dry environments like those found in deserts or highlands, which are often the original habitats of air plants. As a result, air plants should always be promptly dried after being submerged. To eliminate dampness that makes air plants susceptible to rotting, one simple way to achieve this is to place your air plant behind a ceiling fan. Even if you decide to spritz your plant to water it, it’s still better to take it out of its container so that it can completely dry.
