Why Is The Arizona Agave Endangered?

DECLINE/VULNERABILITY REASONS: Low plant numbers and dispersal make it vulnerable. Habitat loss owing to herbivory of blooming stalks and historic exploitation by cattle, feral burros, and wildlife, as well as illegal gathering, are all threats to the species.

Why is agave endangered?

The Service has proposed the Arizona agave (Agave arizonica), a succulent found only in a small area of central Arizona, for listing as an endangered species (F.R. 5/20/83). Collection for cultivation and commerce, as well as habitat disruption due to cattle grazing, put this plant in jeopardy.

How can we save Arizona agave?

Utilization

According to a study conducted in South Africa, Agave americana leaves may meet 64 percent of the maintenance needs of senior sheep, with the greatest results found at a 45 percent inclusion level in maintenance diets containing 55 percent alfalfa (Hobson, 2016).

What eats agave in the desert?

Agaves, yuccas, and cactus can be badly damaged by ground squirrels, pack rats, rabbits, and mice. Rodents don’t seem to bother aloes too much. These creatures attack and destroy both adult and young plants during periods of extended drought.

How long can agave survive without water?

As I previously stated, the sort of succulents you plant has an impact on how long they can survive without water. Succulents with thick, meaty leaves and stems, in general, can tolerate significantly longer durations without water.

This is because they can store a lot of water and use it when they need it. Here’s a short sample of succulents that can survive for lengthy periods of time without water.

Agave

Because of their exceptional resilience, agaves are often favored as perfect landscaping plants. They have thick, meaty leaves that may retain a lot of water once again. They can go at least 3–6 months without being watered. If grown outside, though, you may never need to water them if they receive a light rain.

Portulaca

Portulacas, also known as Moss Roses, are drought-tolerant, tough plants that can survive without water for lengthy periods of time. Especially if they’re outside and it rains on them. In the summer, though, a gentle sprinkling once a week to enhance flowering is a wonderful idea.

Cacti

The majority of cacti come from desert areas, as we all know. As a result, many of them can survive without water for up to two years. Their thick stems can retain a lot of water, allowing plants to survive long periods of drought. Furthermore, the waxy coating prevents the water from evaporating.

Euphorbia

Euphorbias are fascinating because they can survive for months without water. They’ll go dormant in their native habitat, and all of the stems will shrivel up and resemble dead twigs. The stems will then expand up and turn green once the plant receives water. It’s one of the most impressive examples of plants adapting to their surroundings.

Why is my agave wilting?

Q: The leaves of my Weber’s agave, which I planted in May, have been drooping to the ground for the past month. I stopped watering it on October 4 because I believed three days a week for 20 minutes was too much. It continues to do so. Is it the weevil that’s causing it to die?

A: The problem is either with how it is irrigated or with an insect infestation. The leaves may droop as a result of both insufficient irrigation and grubs feasting on the roots. Earlier in the year, an agave weevil eating on the roots was a possibility. However, watering three times a week is excessive. When leaves droop in the fall, it’s most likely due to a water drainage or irrigation issue.

When watered, agaves prefer to be given a lot of water followed by a long period of no water. Small sips of water irritate them. They prefer a dry period between irrigations to allow the roots to dry out and begin using the stored internal water. They don’t become too big because they’re only watered once in a while.

Never use the same watering cycle or valve as other plants in the landscape. They don’t like to be watered as frequently as fruit trees and other landscape plants do.

If the problem is an insect grub eating on the roots, it occurs in the spring or early summer, not the fall. If a grub is consuming the roots, pea-sized holes in the leaves may be visible. If the leaves are clean and without holes, it’s most likely a watering issue.

What should I do? Water the larger agaves with 10-15 gallons of water each time, and the smaller ones with 5-10 gallons each time. Wait until the soil dries up before watering again. I’m not sure how long that would take because I’m not familiar with your soil.

Because sandy soils dry out rapidly, they need to be irrigated more frequently. Heavier soils, such as those containing silt or clay, store water like a sponge and require less watering. However, in sandy soils, midsummer watering may be seven days between, and in heavier soils, two to three weeks apart.

Get a soil moisture meter and insert the tip about 4 inches into the soil. Water when the meter reads around 3 on the scale. In the spring, treat the plant with a liquid insecticide to keep grubs away from the roots. Fertilize once a year in early spring, right before or immediately after it emerges from its winter hibernation. Applying an insecticide drench immediately before or during flowering is never a good idea.

Q: I have an oleander in a large pot that was given to me from a tree oleander. I grew it in the open air. I went on vacation in the midst of the summer, and when it became hot and there was no water, it perished. However, I’ve noticed some green leaves emerging and the plant has begun to recover. When should you place it in the ground?

A: If you’re growing a plant in a pot or container, you should keep an eye on it, especially if it’s not a desert plant. Oleander is not a plant that grows in the desert. It’s a Mediterranean plant that might be killed if neglected. When you’re on vacation and can’t keep an eye on your plants, it’s far safer to leave them in the ground. Their roots will be able to get more water this way.

It appears like nature was with you, and that it returned when the weather cooled and perhaps a little rain fell. Irrigate dead-looking plants even if you think they aren’t living in the future. Cut them back if they have any life remaining in them, and they might come back to life. These plants will eventually die if they don’t get enough water. They can withstand drought but are not indestructible.

Oleander is one of the easiest desert plants to grow, as long as it is irrigated. Their leaves burn if they don’t get enough water, and they blossom and grow badly. They consume a lot of water, so give them lots of it if you want them to thrive.

They can also withstand drought. Drought tolerance is not the same as water conservation. The terms are not interchangeable.

If you’re not going to keep an eye on your potted oleander, make sure it’s properly planted, in the ground, and watered. It’s best to plant it in the fall, between October and November, or in the spring, between late January and April.

Q: I have an orange tree with eight large oranges on it. A handful of them have small orange patches on them, indicating that they are ripening. Five, on the other hand, are still completely green. Should I pluck all of the oranges and leave them to mature on the windowsill? Could you perhaps clarify what is preventing them from ripening?

A: When citrus fruit is harvested, it does not ripen. If you let them ripen on the tree, they’ll have their full flavor. Oranges come in a variety of colors and mature between late October and December, depending on the type.

Patience is required. When oranges are ripe in the warm tropics, they stay green and are sold that way in local marketplaces. They become orange when ripe in our chilly climate. Oranges are often harvested green and gassed with ethylene to induce them to turn orange. If you do that, however, they will not be fully ripe.

Choosing one and tasting it is a better option. Harvest them all if you enjoy how sweet they are. They should, however, become orange when ripe in our climate.

Q: In six months, our blue yucca filamentosa has doubled in size, with up to four additional plants developing in a clump around the parent plant. When should these new plants be removed, and how should they be removed? We would also prefer for it to stay roughly the same size. Is there any method to slow the rate of growth?

A: That plant can grow up to 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide. If it’s in a smaller space than this, I propose moving it to a new area that can accommodate its size rather than trying to keep it smaller.

This yucca does not fare well in extremely hot climates or dry soil. It is not a desert yucca and does not grow in desert environments.

You can remove the young shoots, or pups as they’re known, whenever it’s cool and the roots have had enough time to heal before it gets too cold or hot. That means you can do it now until roughly mid-November, or in the spring from mid-February until April.

Other times of year will produce nice results, but they will be riskier and require some horticultural gymnastics. The best times to do it are right now and in the spring.

You’ll get dirty doing this, but moisten the soil beneath the yucca to a depth of around 12 inches. Remove the soil from the plant until you can see the puppies’ connections to the mother plant. Short rhizomes or underground stems connect them to the mother plant.

Cut the rhizome as cleanly as possible with disinfected pruning shears or a knife. These tiny plants will be isolated if the “umbilical cord” between the mother yucca and the pup is severed. Once the rhizome is cut, they are on their own.

Remove the puppies and place them in the shade for a day or two to allow the cut rhizome to heal. Simply place them in a shady area. There’s nothing special about it, but it’s not in the sun.

Fill 1 gallon nursery pots or large cans with holes drilled in the bottom to within 1 inch of the rims with clean garden soil or landscaping dirt. Plant them in these containers and keep them watered and fertilized until new growth appears. Move them to a new planting spot or give them away at this time.

Why are my blue agave dying?

Agaves are incredibly robust, and if one is dying, it’s either due to persistent soggy, wet soil conditions (poor drainage and overwatering) or the agave weevil, an insect that tunnels through the base, effectively separating the top from the roots.

How do you cover agave for winter?

1. Select a suitable place with consideration. Northern exposures, low places, and spaces below roof drainage should all be avoided.

2. Provide wind protection for plants. Plant agaves near a dense wind break or cover firmly for the winter where high wind is usual.

3. Plant agaves near huge rocks, which absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night.

4. Plant in an area with enough of drainage. Fill a hole the same size as the root system with an equal blend of soil and pumice or gravel. Overfill the hole to form a tiny mound, then plant the agave on top of it.

5. Protect plants from the elements throughout the winter. Make a plant-covering frame out of wood or other readily available materials. Staple plastic to the frame or cover it with a sheet and secure it tightly. During the winter, leave the frame up. Make sure the plastic does not come into contact with the plants. Snow can shelter plants like a blanket, but it has a cost: the consequences of melting and a cool spring can be more harmful than the cold. Cold-tender agaves benefit from any type of overhead protection, whether from a tree, port overhand, blanket, or cardboard box, even in practically tropical climates.

How do you grow a century plant?

In zones 9 to 11, this drought-tolerant and moderately salt-tolerant plant thrives. Although agave plants are simple to grow, they do have a few “needs” in order to survive. They require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, as well as well-drained soil. Planting in well-drained soil is very crucial for preventing root rot, especially in North Florida, where the cooler winter temperatures may put your plant under stress. If the soil conditions in your yard aren’t perfect for growing century plants, try growing them in a container where you can regulate the soil conditions. Just keep in mind that century plants can grow to be fairly huge; the smaller spineless century plant is a better choice for container gardening.

You may observe several “pups” around the base of the mature parent plant once it has developed. You can remove and transfer the puppies after the parent plant has perished, and begin the growing journey all over again.
