Why is blue agave bad for you?

Sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) both comprise roughly 50% of two simple sugars: glucose and fructose.

Although glucose and fructose have a similar appearance, their actions on the body are vastly different.

Glucose is a critical chemical in the human body. It’s present in a variety of healthful foods, including fruits and vegetables, and your body even creates it to ensure that you never run out.

Glucose is found in all living cells since it is necessary for survival.

Unlike glucose, which can be metabolized by every cell in your body, fructose can only be metabolized in substantial amounts by your liver (9).

Excess added fructose consumption can have a negative impact on your metabolic health, contributing to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes (10).

This is because your liver becomes overworked and begins to convert sugar to fat, causing blood triglycerides to rise. Many scientists believe that part of this fat can become trapped in your liver, resulting in fatty liver disease (11, 12, 13).

This can result in significant long-term increases in blood sugar and insulin levels, increasing your risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (14, 15).

Furthermore, a high fructose diet can raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol and oxidized LDL levels. It may also lead to the formation of abdominal fat (16).

Keep in mind that agave nectar contains roughly 85 percent fructose, which is substantially more than regular sugar (17).

None of this holds true for whole fruits, which are high in fiber and help you feel satisfied quickly. The modest levels of fructose found in fruit are well tolerated by your body.

Because agave syrup contains significantly more fructose than regular sugar, it has a higher risk of causing negative health effects like belly obesity and fatty liver disease.

Is blue agave better than sugar?

Fresh or frozen fruit

Using fresh or frozen fruit is the number one technique to sweeten your food and beverages.

“I grew raised on a high-sugar diet. “I started enjoying the natural sweetness of fresh berries and melon when I cut back on additional sweets and sweeteners,” Taylor explains. “My sugar cravings began to fade at that point.”

Sugar substitutes

Not only does stevia-based sweetener have no calories, but it is also natural rather than artificial. Stevia combined with erythritol (Truvia), a sugar alcohol, works well in low-carb baked goods as well. Taylor recommends combining 1 teaspoon of the sweetener with plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter for a quick and easy sweet treat.

Artificial sweeteners and stevia are better than real sugar if you have prediabetes or diabetes.

“Artificial sweeteners do not spike your blood sugar as quickly as real sugar,” Taylor explains.

Is agave inflammatory?

In numerous nations, A. americana L. is one of the 500 most extensively used medicinal herbs. It’s used as a diuretic and laxative in Mexico, as well as to cure wounds, syphilis, scurvy, and cancer. It’s also used to treat lack of mobility in the extremities and postpartum belly inflammation. Furthermore, Mana et colleagues discovered that the leaves of this plant contain anticancer chemicals. Orally administered A. americana extract with varying concentrations of saponins (120, 240, and 360 mg/kg) to sheep exhibits antiprotozoal activity as well as the ability to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, which aids the growth of these animals’ progeny.

Due to the lack of pharmacological investigations of these plants, which are widely used by different populations in Mexico, the purpose of this study was to assess the anti-inflammatory impact of three species of the agave genus: A.americana, A.tequilana, and A.angustifolia.
