Agaves have long been used as a source of food, fuel, shelter, and fiber, as well as fertilizer and ornamentals, by numerous native and cross-breed groups in Mexico. These plant species are members of the Agavaceae family, which contains over 300 species worldwide, with over 250 of them found in Mexico.
For almost 7,000 years, agave has been used in Mexico as a source of food and fermented beverages. Both tequila and mezcal are distilled from agave and have been certified with a “Denominación de origen” (protected designation of origin) pursuant to the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM, Official Mexican Regulations) regulations NOM-006-SCFI-2005 (tequila) and NOM-070-SCFI-1994 (mezcal) (mezcal).
While these species are commonly used to make fermented beverages, Mexican herbalists have also recorded their usage in traditional medicine. In numerous nations, A. americana L. is one of the 500 most extensively used medicinal herbs. It’s used as a diuretic and laxative in Mexico, as well as to cure wounds, syphilis, scurvy, and cancer. It’s also used to treat lack of mobility in the extremities and postpartum belly inflammation. Orally administered A. americana extract with varying concentrations of saponins (120, 240, and 360 mg/kg) to sheep exhibits antiprotozoal activity as well as the ability to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, which aids the growth of these animals’ progeny.

Does agave nectar cause inflammation?

Unlike glucose, which can be metabolized by every cell in your body, fructose can only be metabolized in substantial amounts by your liver (9).
Excess added fructose consumption can have a negative impact on your metabolic health, contributing to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes (10).
This is because your liver becomes overworked and begins to convert sugar to fat, causing blood triglycerides to rise. Many scientists believe that part of this fat can become trapped in your liver, resulting in fatty liver disease (11, 12, 13).
This can result in significant long-term increases in blood sugar and insulin levels, increasing your risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (14, 15).
Furthermore, a high fructose diet can raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol and oxidized LDL levels. It may also lead to the formation of abdominal fat (16).
Keep in mind that agave nectar contains roughly 85 percent fructose, which is substantially more than regular sugar (17).
None of this holds true for whole fruits, which are high in fiber and help you feel satisfied quickly. The modest levels of fructose found in fruit are well tolerated by your body.
Because agave syrup contains significantly more fructose than regular sugar, it has a higher risk of causing negative health effects like belly obesity and fatty liver disease.
Is agave better for you than sugar?
Agave is less toxic and more natural, but it should be avoided by persons who are regularly monitoring their blood glucose levels. The high sugar level can lower insulin sensitivity and wreak havoc on the liver. Agave is also a sweetener with more calories than table sugar.
People with diabetes should avoid adding sugars to their food and instead use fruit as a sweetener.
What are the side effects of agave?
Within minutes to hours of exposure to the fresh agave plant, swelling and redness, skin sores, and swelling of small blood vessels (veins) may occur. The sap appears to be the plant’s most vexing feature.
Which is healthier honey or agave?
If you have to choose between honey and agave, honey is the healthier option. Honey is mostly composed of fructose, whereas agave contains a higher percentage of glucose. To acquire the blue agave nectar appellation, all blue agave nectar must contain at least 80% fructose, according to Mexican regulations. It can’t be blended with other sugars, and it has to be prepared entirely with blue agave. The greatest focus in the manufacturing of blue agave nectar is product purity and quality. In the case of mixed-source agave nectar, however, such quality criteria may not be adhered to as strictly.

Fresh or frozen fruit
Using fresh or frozen fruit is the number one technique to sweeten your food and beverages.
Fruit contains no unnecessary calories, making it a great sweetener, according to Taylor.
Try adding banana or applesauce to oatmeal, berries to plain Greek yogurt, or frozen fruit to smoothies to sweeten them. Natural flavorings like vanilla or almond extract, cocoa powder, and spices like cinnamon and clove are another option.
“I grew raised on a high-sugar diet. “I started enjoying the natural sweetness of fresh berries and melon when I cut back on additional sweets and sweeteners,” Taylor explains. “My sugar cravings began to fade at that point.”
Sugar substitutes
Not only does stevia-based sweetener have no calories, but it is also natural rather than artificial. Stevia combined with erythritol (Truvia), a sugar alcohol, works well in low-carb baked goods as well. Taylor recommends combining 1 teaspoon of the sweetener with plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter for a quick and easy sweet treat.
Artificial sweeteners and stevia are better than real sugar if you have prediabetes or diabetes.
“Artificial sweeteners do not spike your blood sugar as quickly as real sugar,” Taylor explains.
Is blue agave tequila good for you?
Sorry, this isn’t the cheap tequila you used to drink in college! If the tequila isn’t labeled as 100% agave, it’s most likely made using non-agave sweeteners like cane sugar. Tequila the good stuff labeled “100% Agave,” “100% Blue Agave,” or “100% Agave Azul” is thought to lower blood sugar and triglyceride levels, which are blood fat levels linked to heart disease. Agavins are a natural form of fructans, a type of fructose sugar. When you look at the studies, you’ll notice that the fructans are given to the rodents in either an isolated or supplementary form. These rodents aren’t offered tequila shots!
Is agave in tequila good for you?
