Agave is less toxic and more natural, but it should be avoided by persons who are regularly monitoring their blood glucose levels. The high sugar level can lower insulin sensitivity and wreak havoc on the liver. Agave is also a sweetener with more calories than table sugar.
People with diabetes should avoid adding sugars to their food and instead use fruit as a sweetener.
Is agave just as bad as sugar?
Agave nectar, often known as agave syrup, is a popular sweetener made from numerous distinct agave plant species. Because it has a low GI, which is a measure of how much a food raises your blood sugar levels, it’s typically lauded as a healthy alternative to normal sugar ( 34 , 35 ).
Why you shouldn’t use agave?
Sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) both comprise roughly 50% of two simple sugars: glucose and fructose.
Although glucose and fructose have a similar appearance, their actions on the body are vastly different.
Glucose is a critical chemical in the human body. It’s present in a variety of healthful foods, including fruits and vegetables, and your body even creates it to ensure that you never run out.
Glucose is found in all living cells since it is necessary for survival.
Unlike glucose, which can be metabolized by every cell in your body, fructose can only be metabolized in substantial amounts by your liver (9).
Excess added fructose consumption can have a negative impact on your metabolic health, contributing to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes (10).
This is because your liver becomes overworked and begins to convert sugar to fat, causing blood triglycerides to rise. Many scientists believe that part of this fat can become trapped in your liver, resulting in fatty liver disease (11, 12, 13).
This can result in significant long-term increases in blood sugar and insulin levels, increasing your risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (14, 15).
Furthermore, a high fructose diet can raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol and oxidized LDL levels. It may also lead to the formation of abdominal fat (16).
Keep in mind that agave nectar contains roughly 85 percent fructose, which is substantially more than regular sugar (17).
None of this holds true for whole fruits, which are high in fiber and help you feel satisfied quickly. The modest levels of fructose found in fruit are well tolerated by your body.
Because agave syrup contains significantly more fructose than regular sugar, it has a higher risk of causing negative health effects like belly obesity and fatty liver disease.
Is agave safer than sugar?
Agave has a lower glycemic index (GI) than table sugar because it contains less glucose. As a result, agave is absorbed more slowly into the bloodstream and does not trigger a sudden rise in insulin levels. Agave, on the other hand, has a higher fructose content than sucrose (table sugar). Fructose is metabolized differently than glucose, which is why it has a sweet taste. Unlike glucose, which is turned into energy by all cells’ mitochondria, fructose is largely metabolized by the liver. Excess fructose consumption is known to put strain on the liver and have unfavorable effects on the body. Because fructose is one of the most harmful sugars, always use agave in tiny amounts and buy organic, raw agave rather than the less expensive, highly processed kind.
Some people have problems digesting fructose, and sensitive persons, especially those with irritable bowel syndrome, may have unpleasant side effects like bloating or abdominal discomfort. If you’re prone to gastrointestinal problems, you should avoid agave.
Which is better for you honey or agave?
If you have to choose between honey and agave, honey is the healthier option. Honey is mostly composed of fructose, whereas agave contains a higher percentage of glucose. Honey has a number of health benefits that aren’t available from other natural sweeteners. Honey is fundamentally more like table sugar than agave, despite the fact that both are plant-based and related to table sugar. While honey is the better option, agave may be more useful in modest amounts than table sugar.

Fresh or frozen fruit
Using fresh or frozen fruit is the number one technique to sweeten your food and beverages.
Fruit contains no unnecessary calories, making it a great sweetener, according to Taylor.
Try adding banana or applesauce to oatmeal, berries to plain Greek yogurt, or frozen fruit to smoothies to sweeten them. Natural flavorings like vanilla or almond extract, cocoa powder, and spices like cinnamon and clove are another option.
“I grew raised on a high-sugar diet. “I started enjoying the natural sweetness of fresh berries and melon when I cut back on additional sweets and sweeteners,” Taylor explains. “My sugar cravings began to fade at that point.”
Sugar substitutes
Not only does stevia-based sweetener have no calories, but it is also natural rather than artificial. Stevia combined with erythritol (Truvia), a sugar alcohol, works well in low-carb baked goods as well. Taylor recommends combining 1 teaspoon of the sweetener with plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter for a quick and easy sweet treat.
Artificial sweeteners and stevia are better than real sugar if you have prediabetes or diabetes.
“Artificial sweeteners do not spike your blood sugar as quickly as real sugar,” Taylor explains.
Is agave inflammatory?
Agaves have long been used as a source of food, fuel, shelter, and fiber, as well as fertilizer and ornamentals, by numerous native and cross-breed groups in Mexico. These plant species are members of the Agavaceae family, which contains over 300 species worldwide, with over 250 of them found in Mexico.
For almost 7,000 years, agave has been used in Mexico as a source of food and fermented beverages. Both tequila and mezcal are distilled from agave and have been certified with a “Denominación de origen” (protected designation of origin) pursuant to the Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM, Official Mexican Regulations) regulations NOM-006-SCFI-2005 (tequila) and NOM-070-SCFI-1994 (mezcal) (mezcal).
While these species are commonly used to make fermented beverages, Mexican herbalists have also recorded their usage in traditional medicine. In numerous nations, A. americana L. is one of the 500 most extensively used medicinal herbs. It’s used as a diuretic and laxative in Mexico, as well as to cure wounds, syphilis, scurvy, and cancer. It’s also used to treat lack of mobility in the extremities and postpartum belly inflammation. The sap of the A. angustifolia Haw tree is used to cure stomach problems as well as sprains and fractured bones in both humans and animals. Tequila is the most common use for Agave tequilana (blue agave or blue weber).
Secondary metabolites like as fructans and flavonoids, but primarily terpenoids and steroidal saponins, are abundant in the leaves of these plants. Several saponins have been isolated and identified in the agave genus, including smilagenin (a steroidal saponin that precedes another eight saponins) and gitogenin, which were obtained from A. lechugilla. Manogenin and kamogenin were isolated from the callus culture of A. amanuensis. In a membrane permeability generated by acetic acid model, steroidal saponins isolated from A.attenuata Salm-Dyck and A.shevrei Gentry show anti-inflammatory action. In the study of carrageenan-induced sub-plantar edema, hecogenin and tiogenin extracted from A.americana L. produced stronger anti-inflammatory action than the aqueous extract and even the anti-inflammatory steroid medication dexamethasone. Furthermore, Mana et colleagues discovered that the leaves of this plant contain anticancer chemicals. Orally administered A. americana extract with varying concentrations of saponins (120, 240, and 360 mg/kg) to sheep exhibits antiprotozoal activity as well as the ability to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, which aids the growth of these animals’ progeny.
Due to the lack of pharmacological investigations of these plants, which are widely used by different populations in Mexico, the purpose of this study was to assess the anti-inflammatory impact of three species of the agave genus: A.americana, A.tequilana, and A.angustifolia. This was accomplished using the auricular edema model induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (4,9,12,13,20-pentahydroxytiglia-1,6-dien-3-one 12-tetradecanoate 13-acetate, TPA), as well as a chemical analysis of the species with better biological activity, which resulted in the structural elucidation of an anti-inflammatory compound.
Coconut nectar
Coconut nectar is a fantastic agave syrup substitute since it has the same syrup consistency and sweetness as agave, but it isn’t as extensively processed.
This sort of nectar is made from coconut trees, and the procedure is quite similar to that of maple syrup.
The only difference is that maple syrup has undergone extensive processing. The coconut tree is tapped, resulting in a nutrient-dense “sap” that contains a variety of minerals, 17 amino acids, Vitamin C, and broad-spectrum B vitamins. 8
Blackstrap molasses
This natural sweetener is a by-product of the sugar refining process; it contains 19 calories per teaspoon and has the same carbohydrate content as sugar. 9
Vitamin B, iron, potassium, and other minerals are all abundant in blackstrap molasses. Vegans can supplement their iron intake by eating molasses.
Brown rice syrup
Is a thick syrup prepared from brown rice starch that has been broken down. It contains trace levels of calcium, magnesium, manganese, and zinc, although it is not as nutritious as brown rice. 10
Brown rice syrup, which has a honey-like viscosity, is frequently substituted for high fructose corn syrup in processed foods. It has a gooey consistency and a sweet flavor of its own, but because it has a high GI, it should be used in moderation, just like agave.
Maple syrup
The GI of maple syrup is lower than that of sugar, making it a healthier alternative to table sugar. Zinc, calcium, and potassium are just a few of the vitamins and minerals found in it. 11
Grade B maple syrup is more concentrated than Grade A, which means it’s better for baking because it’s sweeter. However, keep in mind that it still includes a significant amount of sugar.
Stevia
Stevia, a calorie-free sugar agave syrup substitute, was one of the first widely used sugar substitutes. It’s basically a powder manufactured from the leaves of the stevia plant, which is native to Paraguay. 12
Stevia is said to be 300 times sweeter than regular sugar. However, because it does not include any sugar molecules, it has no glucose and is therefore calorie-free. It won’t induce blood sugar spikes as a result of this, which is why it’s such a popular sugar alternative among diabetics. The sole drawback is the harsh aftertaste, which has been described as liquorice-like.

Is tequila agave based?
Tequila and mezcal are both created from the agave plant’s extracted core, often known as the “pia.” The parallels in manufacture, however, cease there.
