Coring can be used to spread Agave ‘Blue Glow.’ To survive, the succulent is forced to produce puppies.
It is monocarpic and will not grow true to seed, despite the occasional flowering.
Coring
Behead the top of your Agave rosette using a sharp, sterilized knife. Drill straight down into the plant’s core using a 1/4 to 1/2 drill bit. The Agave will be forced to pup as a result of this.
How do you propagate blue agave?
When an agave reaches maturity, it produces “pups,” or outgrowths on the plant’s base that can be used for propagation. Wiggling each youngster back and forth until it releases from the parent plant and the soil is the best way to get rid of them. Use cactus soil to plant the pups in individual pots or in the garden. According to The University of Arizona Extension, they can live for at least a year in a tiny container before transplanting.
How do you grow agave blue glow?
Agave ‘Blue Glow’ is a slow-growing evergreen succulent with exquisite rosettes of blue-green, chalky leaves with finely serrated margins and a golden and scarlet ribbon adorning the margins. With its flaming crimson and golden edge, this magnificent beauty is especially attractive when backlit by the light. This Agave will take over ten years to flower. It will then perish without producing offsets. This desired hybrid combines the best traits of its parents: Agave attenuata’s wider leaves and lovely color with Agave ocahui’s smaller stature, solitary habit, and terminal spine. This Agave can be utilized in beautiful pots as a dramatic focal point or accent.
- In full sun, it grows well in slightly acidic, sandy or gravelly, damp or dry, well-drained soils. Tolerates part shade, which is beneficial in hot desert gardens where mild shade prevents the foliage from scorching. In the winter, keep it in a frost-free space, and in the summer, set it out on the patio or balcony. In excessive heat, water frequently; once established, use less water. Drought resistant.

Can agave be propagated from cuttings?
The majority of cacti and agaves are easy to propagate. Many kinds can be reproduced effectively from seed or vegetative cuttings.
Can you cut off agave and replant?
Yes, but rooting will take a long time. The longer it takes for roots to form, the larger the diameter of the stem. Furthermore, the further the cut is made from the lowest leaves, the longer it will take for the plant to root. Just below the greenest portion of the tree’s trunk, make a cut. Allow for a week of air drying before planting in dry soil in a container. Wait until fresh top growth develops, suggesting that roots have begun to form, before watering.
It’s possible to do it now, but it won’t root until early spring. Allow it to grow for a few months in a container before planting in the garden. This will allow you to get the most out of your water and nutrients for the fastest root growth. Make sure the light levels are equivalent to where it will be placed in the future. You could even put the pot there, but only after the beheaded rosette has recovered.
The more I think about it, you could just bury it a little deeper to balance the stem height with the size of the rosette in your garden. This species’ long neck is accustomed to leaning toward the light. It’s difficult to know what the best line of action is, but I wouldn’t rush to behead it unless the length is due to poor light levels. This is known as etiolation, and the sole treatment is to shorten the stem length.
Can you propagate agave in water?

The agave plant will live, sprout roots, and become enormous as long as it receives some indirect sunlight and the water is refreshed every couple of weeks.

Just remember to leave a short section of the stem connecting the smaller plant (called a ‘pup’) to allow another ‘pup’ to develop in its place when removing it from the mother plant. I enjoy watching the plant’s roots curl and twirl in the glass jar.

How do you remove pups from blue glow agave?
First and foremost, I wanted to gain entry to the factory. Agaves didn’t survive all this time in the desert by being soft and kind to critters who like to gnaw on soft and friendly plants, so wear strong gloves because those spines are serious business.
I set up a sheet to keep the mess to a minimum and to catch the fantastic succulent soil that Cactus Jungle uses. There’s a lot of pumice and volcanic rock for aeration, so water drains efficiently and the plant doesn’t get too wet, which agaves don’t like.
I tried gently placing the enormous container on its side in the hopes of shimmying it out, but it wouldn’t budge. My planting bed gardener warned me from the start that I’d have to cut the container to get it out, and he was correct:
Clip the walls of the container from the water hole to the top on two different sides to create a containerized mother plant (use an old pair of shears instead of your sharp pruners if possible). Put on your gloves and pull open the container to remove the agave (this is best with two people when dealing with a large specimen).
If you’re removing a pup from a plant in the ground, dig out the pup with a trowel or small shovel, being careful not to damage the mother plant (or yourself).
How quickly does blue glow agave grow?
Agave comes from the Greek word agave, which meaning “adorable.” The majority of what draws this attribute is its record-breaking ability to produce tall leaves and bloom only once in its lifetime. Despite its slow growth, this succulent develops a magnificent rosette pattern of blue-green leaves with saw-like borders.
While it will take about 7 years for your Blue Glow plant to develop, you will start to see some real benefits after propagating it in the spring or early fall.
The Agave genus contains over 200 different types, and this particular hybrid is just one of them. This plant is deer-resistant and does not react to soluble salts in hard water, in addition to having a high drought tolerance.
How Big Does It Grow?
When compared to other Agave varieties, Blue Glow is usually a little smaller. It can attain a height of 18 inches, but if the growing conditions are perfected, it can reach a height of 24 inches. During its existence, it also stretches to around 2″ or 3″ feet. One of the best seasons to reproduce your Blue Glow plant is in the spring or early fall, as it is a slow-growing succulent.
How do you grow blue glow in agave pots?
It’s a lot of fun and rewarding to grow agave plants in pots. In a container, any agave can be cultivated, but the smaller types are the most preferred. Because agave plants want to be root bound, cultivating them in pots makes them wonderful houseplants.
All agave plants cultivated in containers require a soil that dries slowly yet drains fast. You can produce a nice soil mixture for outdoor pots by combining equal parts compost, potting mix or garden soil, and either gravel, pumice, or coarse sand. Peat moss is not recommended for agave plant cultivation.
If you’re growing agave inside, make sure to use a sterilized potting mix with gravel, pumice, or coarse sand. Do not bury your agave plant too deeply in the soil when you pot it. Make sure the plant’s crown is above the soil line to avoid crown rot, which can be fatal to agave plants.
Why is my blue glow agave turning yellow?
Q: In June and July, one of my friends’ century plants, agave, and cactuses start to turn yellow. These plants are in a rock garden that is watered by hand. They’ve been together for two years.
When agave begins to yellow in the early to mid-summer, two possibilities spring to mind: overwatering or agave weevil. We witness yellowing of the tops and agave weevil death during the months of May, June, and July. Because you said that so many plants are afflicted, it’s possible that overwatering is the issue.
The weevil deposits its eggs in the crotches of the leaves. The eggs hatch and tunnel into the agave’s core to eat, carrying fungi and bacteria with them, which destroy the delicious center. The plant begins to yellow after extensive feeding and breakdown, and eventually collapses during the summer heat.
Insecticides that kill the insect before it feeds are used as a preventative therapy in April. Insecticides are administered as a liquid drench, granules, or a liquid spray that runs into the leaf crotches around the plant and is watered in.
In April, use a single treatment of systemic insecticides or repeated applications of organic pesticides. Always stick to the instructions on the package.
Another cause could be overwatering, which causes the roots to rot. Between waterings, the soil should be completely dry. If you must water your plants regularly, use tiny amounts of water at each irrigation.
Q: In February, the leaves closest to the trunk of my 2-year-old loquat began to turn yellow and fall off. New leaves have begun to emerge, and they currently appear to be in good condition.
A: This tree was most likely shocked, which caused the leaves to fall off. Watering, fertilizers applied too intensively or too close to the trunk, a freeze, or borers decimating loquats can all cause shock.
Because yellowish pigments persist in the leaves after they die, they lose their green chlorophyll and turn yellow.
The good news is that new growth has emerged, indicating that the condition was just transitory. This time of year, borers aren’t an issue, so the concentrate is on irrigation and fertilizers.
Watering issues might arise from using too much water or not watering frequently enough. It will drop its leaves if there has been a dry spell or if it has become extremely hot. It will drop its leaves if the soil is excessively damp for a lengthy period of time. The plant will drop its leaves if fertilizer was administered too close to the trunk or at a rate that was too high for the plant.
Overwatering can take two forms. One is concerned with the amount of water applied to the plant, while the other is concerned with the frequency with which the water is applied. I’m talking about overwatering, which is when you apply water too frequently.
If the soil does not dry out before the next watering, giving a plant too much water in a single application is usually not an issue. Unless you have a drainage issue, once a week is not too often, in my perspective.
I would wait and see what happens if you don’t think the soil was too damp or if you haven’t fertilized the tree.
If you apply fertilizer to the soil and think it was too much, flood the area with water and force the fertilizer away from the trunk and past the roots to dilute it.
A: Pomegranates thrive in Southern Nevada’s climate, which is comparable to that of their native lands. Pomegranates can freeze back in colder climates. Pomegranates have disease concerns in warm, humid regions that we never see in the desert.
We offer a large variety of pomegranates accessible in the United States, collected from all over the world. In some portions of our valley, some of the newer varieties may be cold-sensitive. Unless you want to try something new, I would avoid unfamiliar types.
For the most part, all commercially available pomegranates perform admirably. The flagship pomegranate variety, of course, is Wonderful, which has a stunning ruby red outer and inner color.
Pomegranate rinds are available in a variety of colors, ranging from dark purple to nearly black, to lemon yellow and off-white. The arils, or pulp around the seeds, range in hue from off-white to pink to dark crimson. Seeds can be hard or soft, and they can be eaten.
Sweet and Eversweet are two flavors that you can’t go wrong with. Utah Sweet, a Sweet selection, is a local favorite that is sometimes referred to as seedless. Parfianka is a recently released type from the former Soviet Union that has received outstanding reviews.
Sharps Velvet, Red Silk, Pink Satin, and Grenada are some of my other favorites. In our climate, none of the aforementioned types have suffered any winter damage.
Q: During the summer, I have a 23-year-old ash on a drip irrigation system that I water twice a week. For 30 minutes, the tree is watered with 10 5-gallon-per-hour drip emitters. It is planted in a rock mulch and has a southern exposure. The tree’s leaves have started to fall off, and its limbs are decaying. Is it only the age of the tree, or am I doing something wrong?
A: If all of the emitters are operating properly, you’re watering this tree roughly 50 gallons each week. With the warmer summer approaching, that won’t be enough water to keep this tree alive. That tree, at 23 years old, should get 3 to 5 times as much water in a week during the summer.
If the emitters are positioned 2 to 3 feet apart under the canopy of the tree, ten emitters should suffice. Each time you water, aim to soak about half of the area beneath the tree’s canopy and to a depth of 18 to 24 inches. Increase the number of emitters beneath the tree if possible.
Instead of simply adding more emitters to the tree’s canopy, another option is to add other plants with drip emitters to the canopy. The tree will benefit from this in a number of ways.
May 1 is normally the important date for increasing the frequency of applied water from once a week to twice a week (from the first week of February).
Ash Decline is a disease that has been present in the valley for more than 30 years and exhibits these signs. This disease has affected ash trees planted in rock mulch in hot regions more than trees planted in other locations or in lawns.
The ash tree’s branches are killed by Ash Decline. These trees will become a safety threat if they are not clipped and managed properly. Unfortunately, this illness has no cure, therefore the trees must be eradicated.
This disease was first discovered on Modesto ash, but it has since been discovered on other ash species, including Arizona ash. Because of this illness, I no longer suggest ash trees for use in home landscapes in this area.
This disease is not to be confused with limb dieback that occurs when older, established ash trees are removed from lawns and replaced with desert landscaping. The most common cause of limb die back in situations like this is a lack of water after re-landscaping and installing a new irrigation system.
