Many agave species reproduce both vegetatively and from seed. The vegetative “pups” appear near the mother plant’s base. On their flowering stalks, other agave species generate bulbils (plantlets). With a sharp, clean knife, remove the bulbils and pups and plant them in a well-drained, sandy soil medium.
How do agave plants multiply?
Cutting young plants from the mother plant is the simplest way to multiply Agave plants. Make a horizontal cut about 3 cm beneath the beginning of the lowest leaf with a sharp knive. Only cut plants that have matured into a multi-leaved plant. Allow two weeks for the cutting to root before placing it in dry soil.
Multiply Agave by seed
Agave seed germination is not difficult. Agave flowers between the ages of 7 and 25 years, depending on the species (if plant development was optimal). It may take many years for the plant to flower if it does not flower within this time frame. For a reason, agave plants are frequently referred to as “Century Plants.” Fruit will appear after flowering. The fruits take around nine months to develop and mature. This interval could be shorter in nature, where it is normally warmer. Fruit will occasionally form without pollination. The empty seeds in these fruits, on the other hand, are not fertile and will not germinate. After pollination, harvest the fruits right before they fall from the plant or when they begin to look dry. The optimal time to sow and germinate Agave seeds is the year after harvest. Bulbills (new plants) grow on old flowering stems the most of the time. As we’ll see later in this Agave post, they’re easy to cut off and root.
In practice, agave seed is purchased in the winter and planted in the early spring. June is the ideal month for growing seeds (in Europe). Agave seed can be sown and sprouted with the heat and light of the sun during this month. You could sow earlier in the year, but you’d need artificial light and heat to do it. Over time, seeds will lose their viability. I’ve had good luck growing Agave seedlings using the following mix: 25% crushed lava rocks or clay granulate, 50% ordinary potting soil, 25% coarse sand, 25% crushed lava rocks or clay granulate Place this soil mix in a container or seedtray and smooth off the surface. Do not use your hand or anything else to press the earth. For proper water drainage and air circulation, keep the structure open. Sow the seeds at a distance of 0.5-1 cm apart and cover with a layer of 3-5 mm fine grit or coarse sand (particle diameter not larger than 4 mm). Keep the seeds damp but not soaked until they germinate. After about a week, the first seeds should germinate. The remaining seeds will germinate during the next few weeks. Increase ventilation after germination. From May through August, provide ample light while also providing shade against direct sunlight. It is uncommon to obtain a 100% germination rate. Agave species have different germination rates. In most cases, rates of 50% to 90% are achieved. Desinfectants are not required during seed germination. Use the right germination medium and pay close attention to the temperature and watering schedule. The soil is kept somewhat moist for the first month following germination of the Agave plants, and night temperatures may not go below 10 degrees Celsius for the first three months, while day temperatures (produced by sunshine) may reach up to 35 degrees Celsius without difficulty. The water regime must be changed around 5 weeks following germination. Allow the soil to dry between waterings rather than keeping the seedlings constantly moist. Once a week, water the plants. If the soil is still wet, don’t water it.
Soaking or watering can be done from the top or from below. Begin feeding less water at the end of September, once every 14 days. In October, we begin to prepare the plants for the winter, when they will receive almost little water. When maintained dry, the American Agave species may withstand winter temperatures of a few degrees Celsius above freezing. If the roots of some species, such as Agave parryi and parryi variants, are kept entirely dry, they may withstand temperatures well below freezing. During the winter, agave species belonging to places with higher night temperatures, such as the Caribbean’s coastal regions, must be kept at a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. If you opt to keep your seedlings warm (room temperature) during the winter, water them carefully every three weeks. Increase the watering frequency to once every two weeks from the end of March, depending on the quantity of sun hours. Water can also be given in greater quantities, but only when the soil is entirely dry.
Multiply Agave by bulbils
Bulbils are a third way for propagating Agave plants. These are little plants that grow on the stalks after the flowers have faded. This is a simple procedure. Bulbils are Agave plants in their entirety, but they lack roots or have extremely small roots. After planting these bulbils, be very careful with watering, especially in the first few months. In their search for water and nutrition, bulbils must form roots and are particularly vulnerable to rot during this month.
Multiply Agave through underground shoots
The following is a new and highly intriguing way of propagation: Shoots have traveled 5 to 40 cm underground before reaching the surface. These shoots could be used to generate 1-7 plants! The author experimented with a yellow variety of Agave Americana â medio-pictaâTM, a highly sought-after species, in March 2005. The end outcome was fantastic. The stalks were sliced into many parts. Each piece must have at least one sleeping eye. The eye is compelled to begin developing after potting. After roughly a year, the developing plants reach a diameter of around 7 cm. The most crucial thing is that they all maintain the mother plant’s color scheme.
Agave propagation by cloning
Cloning is another way to propagate Agave. Professional growers of a variety of plant species employ this strategy. This strategy is also highly useful for Agave species for which no seeds or cuttings are available.
Agave propagation by damaging
Damage the mother plant as a last way of Agave propagation! This can be accomplished in a variety of ways.
Make small cuts in the root’s base with a razor-sharp knive. As a result of the cuttings, some mother plants will produce baby plants. The point of growth can be taken out of the Agave’s core in some older plants. It is possible to do so with the majority of Agave types. As a result, the plant may produce new plants from the leaf axil. In a test using Agave titanota, this resulted in the growth of ten additional plants. Some species have a tendency to produce new plants as an extension from the mother plant’s side. When the growing tip of a young Agave plant is slightly clipped, this can happen. It works in Agave filifera, for example. Unfortunately, while this species is abundant, this strategy is not very appealing. This method of propagation (which appears to be similar to cloning without the use of a lab) may also be successful in more sought-after Agave species.
Do agave plants reproduce sexually or asexually?
Agaves have evolved two modes of sexual and asexual reproduction. They can reproduce sexually through seeds and asexually by aerial bulbils, ground-level basal shoots, and rhizomes that are genetically identical to the parent plant.
Do agaves reproduce?
Agaves are unusual plants in that they reproduce in three different ways, none of which are mutually incompatible. They create small clones of themselves from their bases, which are known as hijuelos and can occur at any time during an agave’s life cycle. If you reside in the southwest, you’ve probably seen agave plants in gardens or medians with dozens of small agave plants emerging from the base, sometimes pushing out the original. Hijuelos are what they’re called.
The literal definition of hijuelo in Spanish is “youth” or “plant sprout.” It’s also sometimes used to refer to one of the so-called “agave “pups,” which are genetic clones of their mother: They literally emerge from an agave’s root system and grow alongside it. It’s also used when talking about the proliferation of baby agaves in nurseries all around Mexico. This is a complicated and difficult topic that goes to the heart of mezcal since it dictates which fruits go into your bottle.
Agaves, on the other hand, do produce seeds, however they only do so once in their lives. Agave plants produce quiotes, a large bloom that grows from the center of the plant at the conclusion of its life. The quiotes are magnificent views that fly into the air, generally 20 feet or more, and bloom with stunning golden flowers. Drying them out and leaning them against a wall as a fantastic decoration is common.
But, getting back to how they work, quiotes produce seeds that are pollinated by birds and bats. Bats are, in fact, one of the most important pollinators in the agave world! The seeds of fertilized agaves fall to the ground after pollination and can form genetically different agaves. In practice, because agave seeds aren’t the most prolific producers, this is a crap shoot. But it’s also crucial because this is how agaves acquire genetic variety, which makes them disease resistant and allows for different variations to evolve over long periods of time, which is how you get all the amazing agave variants that make for such diverse mezcals.
But hold on! The agave’s reproductive narrative doesn’t end there. Agaves are unusual plants for a number of reasons, but one of the most interesting is their third mode of reproduction. This is another cloning process, however it’s a little odd: Small, young agaves emerge from the mother agave’s top, descend to the ground, and take root where they land or are transported. This is extremely rare and difficult to come across. They also have a fantastic name “Bulbs.”
So, my wonderful mezcal enthusiast, why should this matter to you? The way agave is farmed, for example, has a significant impact on what you drink. That is the reason.
Because it is one of the easiest agaves to cultivate in controlled conditions, the vast majority of mezcal is currently made from a single species of agave called espadin, also known by its formal name Agave angustifolia. It was simple to grow since farmers could start with seed and hijuelos, it matures at a predictable rate, and yields a consistent amount of starch. Farmers appreciate consistency because they know that if they plant an espadin hijuelo now, water it, and keep it in good condition, they’ll be able to harvest it in 6-8 years. Note the difference in time, 6-8 years; this means that if you establish an espadin field today, you’ll be harvesting it in six to eight years, or longer. In the world of mezcal, that is considered consistent. In contrast, a vineyard manager in Napa or Sonoma analyzes consistency across a 12-month period from August to October. Espadin is the genetic father of blue agave, which is used to manufacture tequila, therefore they have a lot in common, especially in terms of growing ease.
Farmers may build up a reasonably controlled, agricultural production line and know that they’ll be able to create a specific amount of mezcal at a certain time in the future due of the level of consistency in planting espadin. They can speed up the process by hiring nurseries, but it will take longer because they will have to think in 6-8 year intervals again. These green homes have nothing in common with the nostalgic metal-framed glass enclosures of Europe’s past or the sealed plastic enclosures of today’s aquaculture. No, these are usually just areas of land dedicated to bringing young agave plants through their first years, with a bit of burlap or woven plastic put overhead to provide shade under extremely scorching rays.
Agave producers have worked out how to cultivate many additional species of agaves that were once thought to only grow in the wild, such as tobala, madrecuixe, and cupreata, which is one of the most exciting advancements in the world of mezcal in recent years. We believe Luis Mendez of Sola de Vega was the first person to try with cultivating tobala and other wild agaves (more on this as Susan visited him during her trip in July.)
Today, more people are taking on silvestre-cultivation projects, including, to name a few: The Fundación Agaves Silvestres is working in San Dionisio Ocotepec, while Vago is working in the Sierra Norte’s Candelaria Yegole and Tosba. This is critical since there are only so many wild agaves to go around; in some parts of Oaxaca’s central valley, where tobala used to be abundant, finding a single plant is difficult. In the silvestres gold rush, many other regions are being stripped bare. Others are aggressively managing their stocks, but it’s a difficult proposition; wouldn’t you be tempted if you could earn a lot of money for the wild agaves on your land right now?
Cultivation also makes production more predictable, allowing agave growers to budget for vital expenses such as future business investments and critical expenses like as paying for their children’s education and health care. Because so many people work in the agriculture business, the larger picture is critical: if they can earn a living income and carve a path to advancement in the mezcal industry, everything will be better, literally. It promotes the development of the mezcal business, resulting in stable cash streams for farmers, distillers, and everyone else involved in the supply chain. That means they can all feed their families while also investing in more profitable or sustainable businesses. It also has a significant impact on immigration and all other aspects of Mexico’s international relations, particularly with the United States.
Of course, there is a drawback to this development: really wild agaves are one-of-a-kind and may be utilized to make mezcals with one-of-a-kind flavors. That is to say, you should keep the bottles of mezcal manufactured from truly wild agaves that are currently on the market because they are truly unique. Many mezcals manufactured from previously wild agave types will be cultivated in a few years, with a variety of flavors. That isn’t to say they aren’t valuable, but they will be unique.
How do you propagate agave?
When an agave reaches maturity, it produces “pups,” or outgrowths on the plant’s base that can be used for propagation. Wiggling each youngster back and forth until it releases from the parent plant and the soil is the best way to get rid of them. Use cactus soil to plant the pups in individual pots or in the garden. According to The University of Arizona Extension, they can live for at least a year in a tiny container before transplanting.
Is Blue Agave same as century plant?
Agaves come in a variety of varieties, including blue agave, from which tequila is made; Utah agave, the only one endemic to the Mojave desert; and Agave americana, often known as the century plant.
What are offsets in biology?
An offset (also known as a pup) is a small, nearly full daughter plant that has been formed spontaneously and asexually on the mother plant in botany and horticulture. They are clones, which means they have the same genetic makeup as the mother plant. They divide by mitosis. They are removed and nurtured in plant nurseries and gardens in order to create new plants. For plants that produce offsets frequently, this is a low-cost and straightforward method that does not normally necessitate the use of specialized materials or equipment.
Any short shoot growing from the ground at the base of another shoot can also be referred to as an offset or pup.
Offsets are formed when plant meristem areas, such as axillary buds or homologous structures, develop into a new self-sustaining plant.
This is especially common in species with underground storage organs like bulbs, corms, and tubers. Tulips and lilies are examples of plants that generate cormlets around the original mother corm, displaying offset features.
It’s a technique for propagating plants. Various cloning procedures (asexual reproduction) are utilized when propagating plants to enhance a cultivar’s stock and hence seek identical replicas of the parent plant. Plants can be cloned via offsets, which are a natural way of doing so.
Sexual reproduction by pollination, on the other hand, is utilized to develop seeds when propagating plants to create new varieties.
Recombination of genes produces progeny plants with genomes that are similar but unique.
What are agave pups?
Agave types like the century plant (Agave americana) are prevalent in xeric low-water landscaping in USDA plant hardiness zones 9b to 11a, where they can live for years in the correct conditions. As agave plants age, they produce pups, or offshoots, around their base, which will eventually replace them once they flower and die. When the puppies are separated from their mother, they will eagerly put down roots and grow into new plants, but this process works best when done at the proper time of year.
Can you cut off agave and replant?
Yes, but rooting will take a long time. The longer it takes for roots to form, the larger the diameter of the stem. Furthermore, the further the cut is made from the lowest leaves, the longer it will take for the plant to root. Just below the greenest portion of the tree’s trunk, make a cut. Allow for a week of air drying before planting in dry soil in a container. Wait until fresh top growth develops, suggesting that roots have begun to form, before watering.
It’s possible to do it now, but it won’t root until early spring. Allow it to grow for a few months in a container before planting in the garden. This will allow you to get the most out of your water and nutrients for the fastest root growth. Make sure the light levels are equivalent to where it will be placed in the future. You could even put the pot there, but only after the beheaded rosette has recovered.
The more I think about it, you could just bury it a little deeper to balance the stem height with the size of the rosette in your garden. This species’ long neck is accustomed to leaning toward the light. It’s difficult to know what the best line of action is, but I wouldn’t rush to behead it unless the length is due to poor light levels. This is known as etiolation, and the sole treatment is to shorten the stem length.
