Growing agave is simple if you choose the proper kind and put it in the right spot. Agaves require full sun and a grittier, easily percolating soil. They can even be potted if you use an unglazed clay container that will let excess moisture to evaporate.
The amount of water required varies based on the season’s heat, but the plants should be allowed to dry up before irrigation.
They benefit from the application of a granulated time release fertilizer in the spring, which will provide their nutrient requirements for the entire season.
Many agave kinds die after flowering and are replaced by pups or offshoots produced from their base. It’s a good idea to buy long-handled pruners and remove the wasted bloom on kinds where the parent plant doesn’t die after flowering.
After the plants have been established, neglect is the best way to develop agave and generate happy plants.
How fast do agave plants grow?
It only grows to approximately 6 inches tall and blooms with green flowers every six to eight years. Agave tequilana azul: Weber’s blue agave is used to produce tequila, but it’s also a lovely garden plant that grows up to 6 feet tall and blooms with yellow blooms every six to eight years.
How do agave plants survive?
Agaves cultivated in pots require a soil that dries slowly yet drains well. Mix equal amounts compost and dirt in a potting mix. Always plant agaves with the crown well above the soil level, since this will ensure that the crown remains above the soil line when the soil settles after watering.
Can agave grow in pots?
Agaves are adaptable plants with beautiful shapes that bring drama to sunny areas as well as pots. They grow attractive rosettes of thick, rigid, fleshy leaves with marginal teeth and often a sharp terminal spine, and they are evergreen succulents of extraordinary beauty and structural shape. They’ve been described as big stylized flowers or artichokes, and they thrive on being ignored. Agaves may grow in a variety of soils as long as they have adequate drainage, require little water, and rarely require fertilizer.
Try growing these beautiful blooms in pots in gardens with limited space or where the growing circumstances aren’t ideal. Because of their small root system and tolerance for crowding, agaves make great container plants. Containers also make it simple to locate the proper amount of sun or shade, as well as to protect plants from excessive rain or cold.
Agave, a genus of roughly 300 species belonging to the Asparagaceae family, comes in a diverse range of sizes, colors, and leaf forms. While any agave species can be cultivated in a container, smaller species are the safer bet. You never know when your heart will grow a big asparagus spear. After resting quietly in your yard for fifteen or twenty years, agave plants decide to do something unexpected. Agave plants are a common sight in Austin, Texas, where they’re positioned in front of your favorite mid-priced Mexican restaurant, stuck in a traffic island between a Bed Bath & Beyond and a Whataburger, and groomed into enormous pineapples in grandmother lawns. I had two of them in my yard and had no idea until one of them poked me in the leg.
The agave, as lovely as it is, has the ability to lull you into a state of apathy. One day, you walk past the agave, which is leaning against your mailbox like a drunk and pointing an asparagus spear the size of a telephone poll at the skies. With this asparagus thing, I’m not implying anything about European colonization of the Americas. It juts out of the heart of a languid agave like an asparagus spear, thick as a tree trunk, that could be served at a farm-to-table restaurant for gods. You say it out loud, “That’s strange.” And the guy in the neighbor’s driveway who lives in a camper van tells you, “Did you know that agaves and asparagus are related?”
The Asparagaceae family contains 200 species of Agave (genus Agave). Mexico, the southwestern United States, and the Caribbean are all home to this species. The most common type of agave is used to make tequila, mezcal, and agave nectar, among other things (a sweetener). The century plant, also known as the maguey agave, is most typically used as a landscape ornament. The leather-like leaves of the agave are distinguished by their spiky prickles. Agaves form a symmetrical rosette, with some remaining tight and spherical and others becoming floppy and awkward. An agave may grow up to 20 feet in circumference, around the size of a bouncy castle, given the correct conditions. Most are pleased to live in pots or to adorn the lawns of their grandmothers. Aside from that, agaves are a jumble of inconsistencies.
Number one: An agave is not a cactus.
Agaves are not cacti they’re a completely different type of plant from a different lineage. They’re sometimes mistaken for cacti because they’re thorny and thrive in the desert. Agaves have plump leaves that thin out and are somewhat spiky, similar to aloe which they are not. Some agave plants yield sap, which can be used to manufacture pulque, a fermented alcoholic beverage that predates tequila by millennia. Mayahuel, the Nahuatl deity of agave, used her 400 breasts to serve pulque. She had a brief relationship with Quetzalcoatl. Mayahuel, on the other hand, was not a cactus.
Number two: Agaves lie about their age.
Despite their reputation as century plants, most agaves only live for 15 to 30 years. At the garden center, opinions differ, but you might be able to extend the life of an agave by trimming its lower leaves and leaving only the leaves near the top, or the center of the rosette. Agaves, when freshly clipped, resemble over-sized store pineapples. It is up to the agave in question to decide whether or not this strategy will succeed. Once an agave has developed flower buds from its agave trunk, it has completed its transformation into a completely new plant, and all you can do now is assist the plant in getting its affairs in order. Whatever you do, you’re dealing with a plant that will outlast a couple of house cats. Take or give.
Number three: Agaves are not asparaguses.
Although the agave is a member of the asparagus family, it is not an asparagus. Agaves near death convert decades’ worth of energy into a massive asparagus death spear the size of a cell phone tower tree. The agave makes its final stand with a tremendous explosion of high-weirdness. The ordinary dinner-table asparagus, like the agave, belongs to the monocots (monocotyledons) plant group. They only have one seed leaf (cotyledon). This is a topic on which many individuals have a lot to say. Dave’s Garden provides my favorite definition:
The first leaf that develops from a seed is known as a cotyledon. Dicots have two, while monocots have only one. It’s a big thing. Some plants only have one leaf at the start of their existence, while others have two. There doesn’t seem to be enough of a difference to justify basing an entire plant classification system on. But, well, we have to start somewhere, right?
Orchids, most species of grass, palms, lilies, and the pineapple are all monocots. Long-distance relationships between Europe, Africa, and Asia are asparagus.
The only time an agave reproduces is just before it dies. Monocarpy is the process of only reproducing once blooming, setting seeds, and dying. An agave reserves all of its energy over the course of its existence, waiting for the appropriate moment to disperse its seeds and reproduce. It hunkers down, storing all of its vitality in its heart, weathering years of drought and periods of torrential rain and when it rains in the desert, it’s as if all of the sky devils decided to empty their above-ground pools at the same time. The agave then produces a gigantic, flowering asparagus spear out of its heart for its own purposes.
The agave holds a pollination sex party when the asparagus tree flowers. Bats, ants, hawkmoths, beetles, and doves that feed on nectar arrive to disperse agave pollen and seeds. The agave’s asparagus spear smashes to the ground when it dies, scattering seed babies to grow more agave plants. Or slam a Subaru Outback into a cul-de-sac in South Austin.
It’s a huge pain to get rid of a dead agave. Agaves feature thick root systems in addition to their thorny leaves. The blue-gray leaves will rot into an awkward mound of white and crumbly plant decomposition if left to rot, as if a swarm of bunniculas had an agave hoedown. Old Doritos bags appear to be attracted to dead agave mounds as well. Look for the discarded remnants in the nearest agave corpse if a teenager can find food in it. There’s a giant dead one wrapped around a cactus that’s about to die that’s also wrapped around a mailbox in my area. This same house is constantly putting out boxes of old karate trophies, as if they’re going to be stolen.
Bats and agaves are said to have co-evolved. Agave nectar is used by long-nosed bats, who are an endangered species. The pollen grains are rolled around by the bats. When they fly away to search more food, they carry additional pollen with them, allowing cross-fertilization to occur. Here’s how Bats Magazine explains it:
Mutualists describe a relationship in which both the plant and the bat gain from it. Scientists believe that this relationship evolved as a result of bats and plants coevolving, and that the dependency is so strong that the plants could not reproduce without the bats, who would starve to death if the plants were not around. This association appears to be quite sensitive to disruption.
Tequila manufacturing is one of these disturbances, as it puts long-nosed bat populations and agaves at jeopardy. Tequila is made from the heart of the agave azul, which must be harvested before it flowers. While the loss of so many century plants in my neighborhood is heartbreaking, it is also lovely since it is preventing a swarm of long-nosed bats from going hungry.
The web of life is twisted and has connections all over the place. According to our current understanding, no other planet has as much life as ours. Sure, there might be phosphorescent fish swimming beneath Europa’s freezing oceans or tardigrade-like organisms clinging to Ceres’ water-vapor eruption. If the agave’s asparagus death spear teaches us anything, it’s that life is fleeting and precious, that all living things have quiet links, and that it’s never too late to be weird.
Do agave plants need full sun?
Agaves are native to the desert, but they should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Many agaves thrive in the wild beside scrub oak or other larger plants that give shade during the warmest times of the day. Smaller and younger agaves should be given moderate shade, although larger and older agaves can tolerate several hours of intense sunlight. Agaves have a woody root structure that is very large and deep. This makes it easier for them to look for water in new places, but it also makes transplanting huge plants more challenging.
Is agave an outdoor plant?

How cold can agave survive?
It forms medium-sized rosettes with blue-gray leaves and grows slowly. In hot areas, it will tolerate mild shade and is cold hardy to -20°F.
Why is my blue agave turning yellow?
Q: In June and July, one of my friends’ century plants, agave, and cactuses start to turn yellow. These plants are in a rock garden that is watered by hand. They’ve been together for two years.
When agave begins to yellow in the early to mid-summer, two possibilities spring to mind: overwatering or agave weevil. We witness yellowing of the tops and agave weevil death during the months of May, June, and July. Because you said that so many plants are afflicted, it’s possible that overwatering is the issue.
The weevil deposits its eggs in the crotches of the leaves. The eggs hatch and tunnel into the agave’s core to eat, carrying fungi and bacteria with them, which destroy the delicious center. The plant begins to yellow after extensive feeding and breakdown, and eventually collapses during the summer heat.
Insecticides that kill the insect before it feeds are used as a preventative therapy in April. Insecticides are administered as a liquid drench, granules, or a liquid spray that runs into the leaf crotches around the plant and is watered in.
In April, use a single treatment of systemic insecticides or repeated applications of organic pesticides. Always stick to the instructions on the package.
Another cause could be overwatering, which causes the roots to rot. Between waterings, the soil should be completely dry. If you must water your plants regularly, use tiny amounts of water at each irrigation.
Q: In February, the leaves closest to the trunk of my 2-year-old loquat began to turn yellow and fall off. New leaves have begun to emerge, and they currently appear to be in good condition.
A: This tree was most likely shocked, which caused the leaves to fall off. Watering, fertilizers applied too intensively or too close to the trunk, a freeze, or borers decimating loquats can all cause shock.
Because yellowish pigments persist in the leaves after they die, they lose their green chlorophyll and turn yellow.
The good news is that new growth has emerged, indicating that the condition was just transitory. This time of year, borers aren’t an issue, so the concentrate is on irrigation and fertilizers.
Watering issues might arise from using too much water or not watering frequently enough. It will drop its leaves if there has been a dry spell or if it has become extremely hot. It will drop its leaves if the soil is excessively damp for a lengthy period of time. The plant will drop its leaves if fertilizer was administered too close to the trunk or at a rate that was too high for the plant.
Overwatering can take two forms. One is concerned with the amount of water applied to the plant, while the other is concerned with the frequency with which the water is applied. I’m talking about overwatering, which is when you apply water too frequently.
If the soil does not dry out before the next watering, giving a plant too much water in a single application is usually not an issue. Unless you have a drainage issue, once a week is not too often, in my perspective.
I would wait and see what happens if you don’t think the soil was too damp or if you haven’t fertilized the tree.
If you apply fertilizer to the soil and think it was too much, flood the area with water and force the fertilizer away from the trunk and past the roots to dilute it.
A: Pomegranates thrive in Southern Nevada’s climate, which is comparable to that of their native lands. Pomegranates can freeze back in colder climates. Pomegranates have disease concerns in warm, humid regions that we never see in the desert.
We offer a large variety of pomegranates accessible in the United States, collected from all over the world. In some portions of our valley, some of the newer varieties may be cold-sensitive. Unless you want to try something new, I would avoid unfamiliar types.
For the most part, all commercially available pomegranates perform admirably. The flagship pomegranate variety, of course, is Wonderful, which has a stunning ruby red outer and inner color.
Pomegranate rinds are available in a variety of colors, ranging from dark purple to nearly black, to lemon yellow and off-white. The arils, or pulp around the seeds, range in hue from off-white to pink to dark crimson. Seeds can be hard or soft, and they can be eaten.
Sweet and Eversweet are two flavors that you can’t go wrong with. Utah Sweet, a Sweet selection, is a local favorite that is sometimes referred to as seedless. Parfianka is a recently released type from the former Soviet Union that has received outstanding reviews.
Sharps Velvet, Red Silk, Pink Satin, and Grenada are some of my other favorites. In our climate, none of the aforementioned types have suffered any winter damage.
Q: During the summer, I have a 23-year-old ash on a drip irrigation system that I water twice a week. For 30 minutes, the tree is watered with 10 5-gallon-per-hour drip emitters. It is planted in a rock mulch and has a southern exposure. The tree’s leaves have started to fall off, and its limbs are decaying. Is it only the age of the tree, or am I doing something wrong?
A: If all of the emitters are operating properly, you’re watering this tree roughly 50 gallons each week. With the warmer summer approaching, that won’t be enough water to keep this tree alive. That tree, at 23 years old, should get 3 to 5 times as much water in a week during the summer.
If the emitters are positioned 2 to 3 feet apart under the canopy of the tree, ten emitters should suffice. Each time you water, aim to soak about half of the area beneath the tree’s canopy and to a depth of 18 to 24 inches. Increase the number of emitters beneath the tree if possible.
Instead of simply adding more emitters to the tree’s canopy, another option is to add other plants with drip emitters to the canopy. The tree will benefit from this in a number of ways.
May 1 is normally the important date for increasing the frequency of applied water from once a week to twice a week (from the first week of February).
Ash Decline is a disease that has been present in the valley for more than 30 years and exhibits these signs. This disease has affected ash trees planted in rock mulch in hot regions more than trees planted in other locations or in lawns.
The ash tree’s branches are killed by Ash Decline. These trees will become a safety threat if they are not clipped and managed properly. Unfortunately, this illness has no cure, therefore the trees must be eradicated.
This disease was first discovered on Modesto ash, but it has since been discovered on other ash species, including Arizona ash. Because of this illness, I no longer suggest ash trees for use in home landscapes in this area.
This disease is not to be confused with limb dieback that occurs when older, established ash trees are removed from lawns and replaced with desert landscaping. The most common cause of limb die back in situations like this is a lack of water after re-landscaping and installing a new irrigation system.
