Agave is less toxic and more natural, but it should be avoided by persons who are regularly monitoring their blood glucose levels. The high sugar level can lower insulin sensitivity and wreak havoc on the liver. Agave is also a sweetener with more calories than table sugar.
People with diabetes should avoid adding sugars to their food and instead use fruit as a sweetener.
What are the side effects of agave?
Within minutes to hours of exposure to the fresh agave plant, swelling and redness, skin sores, and swelling of small blood vessels (veins) may occur. The sap appears to be the plant’s most vexing feature.
Is agave harmful to the body?
Sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) both comprise roughly 50% of two simple sugars: glucose and fructose.
Although glucose and fructose have a similar appearance, their actions on the body are vastly different.
Glucose is a critical chemical in the human body. It’s present in a variety of healthful foods, including fruits and vegetables, and your body even creates it to ensure that you never run out.
Glucose is found in all living cells since it is necessary for survival.
Unlike glucose, which can be metabolized by every cell in your body, fructose can only be metabolized in substantial amounts by your liver (9).
Excess added fructose consumption can have a negative impact on your metabolic health, contributing to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes (10).
This is because your liver becomes overworked and begins to convert sugar to fat, causing blood triglycerides to rise. Many scientists believe that part of this fat can become trapped in your liver, resulting in fatty liver disease (11, 12, 13).
This can result in significant long-term increases in blood sugar and insulin levels, increasing your risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (14, 15).
Furthermore, a high fructose diet can raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol and oxidized LDL levels. It may also lead to the formation of abdominal fat (16).
Keep in mind that agave nectar contains roughly 85 percent fructose, which is substantially more than regular sugar (17).
None of this holds true for whole fruits, which are high in fiber and help you feel satisfied quickly. The modest levels of fructose found in fruit are well tolerated by your body.
Because agave syrup contains significantly more fructose than regular sugar, it has a higher risk of causing negative health effects like belly obesity and fatty liver disease.
Which is healthier agave or honey?

Fresh or frozen fruit

Not only does stevia-based sweetener have no calories, but it is also natural rather than artificial. Stevia combined with erythritol (Truvia), a sugar alcohol, works well in low-carb baked goods as well. Taylor recommends combining 1 teaspoon of the sweetener with plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter for a quick and easy sweet treat.
Artificial sweeteners and stevia are better than real sugar if you have prediabetes or diabetes.
“Artificial sweeteners do not spike your blood sugar as quickly as real sugar,” Taylor explains.
Which is better for diabetics honey or agave?

Agave is high in agavins, which provide sweetness and nutrients without raising blood sugar levels. This is due to the fact that the body is unable to absorb them.

However, most commercially available agave syrups contain fructans that have been broken down into fructose sugars. Fructose can be digested by the body and has an effect on blood sugar levels.
What drink is made from agave?
Tequila and mezcal are both created from the agave plant’s extracted core, often known as the “pia.” The parallels in manufacture, however, cease there. Tequila is usually made by heating the agave in industrial furnaces and then distilling it twice or three times in copper pots. Agave is made from the same plants that produce tequila. These plants’ juices include inulin, a sweet carbohydrate that is taken from the plant, filtered, cooked, and then treated with enzymes to convert it to sugar, which is sold as inulin “nectar,” he says.
Agave nectar has a lower glycemic index than white sugar, so it doesn’t spike your blood sugar as much. It has no flavor and dissolves quickly in cold liquids, such as freshly brewed iced tea. It’s also sweeter than white sugar while containing the same number of calories (16 per teaspoon), so you won’t need as much. It’s also suitable for vegans who avoid honey.
The natural high fructose level of agave is a source of concern. Unlike sugar, which is broken down into 50% fructose and 50% glucose by the body, agave is broken down into up to 90% fructose. Even high fructose corn syrup has a higher fructose concentration. The high sugar content of agave is, ironically, the explanation for its low glycemic index. However, some studies have shown that large amounts of pure fructose can injure your liver; however, there is no evidence that moderate amounts are harmful.
Although I favor less-refined sweeteners like maple syrup, honey, and molasses, which include antioxidants and trace minerals, agave has its own set of advantages and deserves to be included in my sugar alternatives. It, on the other hand, does not earn its health halo. Agave, like all artificial sweeteners, should be used in moderation.
