Have weeds resembling succulents started to appear in your garden or lawn? Purslane (Portulaca oleracea), probably the most frequently encountered and prevalent weed with succulent leaves, might show up frequently in your environment. Even though purslane is often used as an edible, most of us treat it as a weed.
What category do succulents fall under?
Succulent plants are by definition drought-resistant plants with extra-fleshy leaves, stems, or roots due to the growth of water-storing tissue.
[4] According to another source, a plant with thick, meaty, and swollen stems and/or leaves that is adapted to dry settings does not include roots.
[5] The distinction has an impact on how succulents and “geophytes”—plants that endure bad seasons as resting buds on a subterranean organ—relate to one another.
[6] The underground organs, including bulbs, corms, and tubers, are frequently fleshy and contain tissues that store water. Therefore, many geophytes would fall under the category of succulents if roots were included in the definition. Xerophytes are plants that have evolved to survive in dry conditions, such as succulents. Not all xerophytes, however, have succulent leaves because there are various methods to adapt to a lack of water, such as by growing little leaves that can roll up or by having leathery leaves instead of succulent ones. [7] Additionally, not all succulents are xerophytes; for example, Crassula helmsii is a plant that is both aquatic and succulent. [8]
Succulent hobby growers might use the term differently than botanists do. The term “succulent” is frequently used in horticulture to exclude cactus. Cacti are not included in Jacobsen’s three volume Handbook of Succulent Plants, for instance. [9] Cacti and succulents are frequently used as the title of books that discuss how to grow these plants. [10] [11] [12] Cacti are, nonetheless, classified as succulents in botanical terminology,[4] but many succulent plants are not cacti. Cacti are the only plants with real spines, and they exclusively exist in the New World (the Americas). The fact that plant families can contain both succulent and non-succulent species makes generic identification more challenging. There is a distinct progression in many genera and families from plants with thin leaves and regular stalks to those with very visibly swollen and fleshy leaves or stems. When separating plants into genera and families, the succulent characteristic is irrelevant. The same species may be categorized differently by different sources. [13]
Horticulturists frequently adhere to commercial traditions and may omit other plant species, including bromeliads, which are scientifically categorized as succulents.
[14] Without taking into account scientific classifications, a practical definition of horticulture has evolved into “a succulent plant is any desert plant that a succulent plant collector chooses to grow.” [15] Customers will typically recognize “succulent” plants in commercial presentations of them. When plants are marketed as “succulents” (such as hen and chicks), geophytes, in which the swollen storage organ is entirely underground, are less frequently included. Instead, plants with caudexes,[16] which are swollen above-ground organs at soil level that are formed from a stem, a root, or both, are. [6]
Succulent—is that a grass?
The spiral grass plant’s snake-like coiling shape gives it an unusual or even alien appearance. It is green, resembles grass, and has a lengthy spiral shape, as its name implies. But don’t be misled by that; what you’re seeing is a succulent plant. It makes a lovely addition to your backyard garden and is highly hardy.
We’ll talk more about these details and other aspects of this strange plant as we proceed. The spiral grass has five characteristics that you should be aware of if you want to include it to your collection:
1. That Isn’t Grass
Technically speaking, the spiral grass is not grass, as was previously mentioned. Only because of its grass-like color, shape, and feel is it known by that name. When the succulent blooms, it produces the coiled leaves, which typically grow to a height of one foot. Succulents begin life as bulbs. To the touch, the leaves are either hairy, rough, or smooth.
Albuca namaquensis is the official scientific name for spiral grass. It is a member of the Asparagaceae family, which has 2,900 species and 114 genera of flowering plants, including the edible sensitive succulent, asparagus. Scilloideae is its subfamily, which also includes hyacinths. Due to its close likeness, this plant belongs to the Albuca genus and is frequently confused with the Albuca spiralis, also known as Corkscrew Albuca.
2. Flowers Grow There
Flowers will grow on the spiral grass under the right circumstances. A large bulb eventually forms on top of a thick stalk over time. It then develops into a yellow-green bloom that hangs from the succulent’s tip. Its owners describe the floral scent as being somewhere between butter and vanilla.
3. Optimal Setting
Because albucas are native to South Africa, they can adapt to warm conditions easier while still enduring the cold. According to the USDA Hardiness Zone Map, the spiral grass may endure between the scales of 9b and 11b. The succulent can therefore survive temperatures between 25 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, there are several requirements that must be satisfied in order to properly care for the plant during the cold; these will be covered in the final section of this article. 4. Methods of Propagation
Seedlings made following pollination from the flowers can be used to create spiral grass. The most popular technique of propagation to date is through division or bulbs from the mother plant because seed-based reproduction can be challenging.
5. Upkeep Advice
In rock gardens where it is exposed to full or partial sunshine, spiral grass appears better. It is advised that you put it in a succulent pot or container if you happen to live somewhere where the weather frequently becomes chilly so you can move it to a spot in your house that is hottest at that time. Because they are susceptible to damage from frost and are sensitive to cold, don’t forget to clip the plant’s bulbs during the winter as well.
Spiral grass, like the majority of succulents, just needs regular watering after planting. But when it reaches maturity, simply water it sparingly if it seems to be really dry. These surroundings replicate their original habitat high in the Alpine Mountains where they cling to outcroppings and rough cliff sides, therefore Sedum, Sempervivum, and Jovibarba are most at home there. Even in small settings, these and the majority of other succulent kinds will thrive when mixed with other species. What weeds grow in gardens the most frequently?
The most prevalent weeds in gardens and yards are listed below. This list of weeds is divided into two parts: Both 2) noxious weeds, which are so detrimental to the ecology that they are prohibited or controlled by law on a federal or state level, and 1) troublesome weeds, which compete with vegetables, fruits, and crops but may also have their own beneficial uses (in fact, many are edible plants or attract pollinators).

I. Troublesome Weeds
The following weeds will grow on their own in gardens and yards, are unpleasant if not controlled, and are not poisonous. You again decide what constitutes a marijuana. Just be aware that they will reduce the output of your intended crop if you have these weeds growing among your vegetables and want to maintain them because of their nutritional value.
Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.)
A summer annual with a sluggish growth rate, crabgrass reproduces via seed and by roots from nodes that are buried in the ground. It can reach a height of two feet if left alone.
When the ground is warm, from mid-spring through the summer, this weed grows. It thrives in hot, dry climates. Since crabgrass is an annual, it must produce new seeds every year because it dies at the end of each growing season, typically at the first fall frost.
Crabgrass, fortunately, is not too difficult to control. Because crabgrass seeds can live for at least three years in the soil, controlling crabgrass before it sets seed is crucial.
Regular mowing of the lawn is frequently sufficient to stop crabgrass from blossoming and setting seed. The majority of experts advise cutting your grass to a height of 2 to 4 inches and maintaining it within that range on a regular basis.
Additionally, if you maintain a lawn, make sure to use localized grass to ensure a robust, healthy lawn. Crabgrass adores a neglected lawn. Crabgrass seedlings aren’t highly competitive, thus a turf that is expanding quickly will smother fresh seedlings. The best rival to crabgrass is perennial ryegrass. It also helps with pest management since it releases a natural poison that causes the “flu” in some tiny, harmful bugs. The important step of fertilizing must be carried out in the spring and the fall.
Crabgrass herbicides are frequently ineffective. Because there are so many different crops grown and planted in vegetable gardens, avoid applying chemical pesticides there. Crabgrass is easily controlled in gardens by hoeing, mulching, and manually removing the plants when they are young and before they set seed. In addition, solarization can be used to suppress this weed. Last but not least, compacted lawns encourage crabgrass growth, therefore aerating the lawn would help much.
By obstructing the sunlight essential for crabgrass’ germination, establishment, and growth, mulch made of wood products (such as wood chips or nuggets), composted yard trash, or synthetic landscape textiles wrapped in mulch will minimize crabgrass in shrub beds, bedding plants, and around trees. Rake the mulch around if crabgrass is sprouting there to prevent seedling development. Crabgrass plants should be manually removed before they go to seed.
Technically, sure, but grasses aren’t the most delicious weeds around. However, crabgrass can be grown as a feed crop for animals, and its seeds have long been utilized as a grain crop.
Purslane (Portulaca oleracea)
In fact, purslane is regarded as poisonous in at least one U.S. state. Why is purslane, an edible annual succulent plant, seen as being so problematic? After all, it contains several vitamins and is sometimes grown as a crop.
The solution is found in the definition of “weeds”: Over 2,000,000 seeds can be produced by one purslane plant! It reproduces in the late spring by small black seeds and stem fragments, and it can also reproduce vegetatively through its leaves, which makes it very difficult to eliminate. Many gardeners have hoed purslane one day only to observe it in full growth the following day. Consider how to manage it instead than just growing purslane.
This summer weed is often handled by manual weeding in domestic landscapes and gardens. Pay attention to purslane! This weed can survive in your soil for years, so pull it out as soon as you spot it and destroy the plant.
Mulching is beneficial, particularly in garden beds. Organic mulches need to be at least 3 inches thick to be effective. Additionally effective are synthetic mulches (such as plastic or fabric mulch), which block light and act as a physical impediment to the growth of seedlings. Plastic mulch is not favored over fabric mulch since it is porous and allows air and water to reach the roots. In attractive plantings, mixtures of synthetic mulches with organic or rock mulches on top are frequently utilized.

Lambsquarters (Chenopodium album)
Another marijuana you can eat! Lambsquarters are a summer annual that grows quickly and are great juiced, cooked, or in salads. In gardens and farms growing sugar beets, vegetables, and pulse crops including dry edible beans, lentils, and chickpeas, this annual broadleaf weed that blooms in the summer is a major issue.
The seeds of lambsquarters are small and light enough to be carried by the wind over short distances. It is an annual that grows quite quickly. The seeds can occasionally remain in the soil for decades. These weeds can establish themselves quickly and spread widely in the right circumstances.

Pigweed (Amaranthus spp.)
The most “problematic annual weed” is pigweed. It has acquired characteristics that make it a formidable rival, particularly in broadleaf crops like cotton and soybeans.
Pigweed is an annual weed that spreads through seeds and is distinguished by its fleshy red taproot. This weed prefers warm temperatures and typically appears in late spring or early summer.
Pigweed is one of the weed seeds that needs sunshine to germinate. Cover your garden area with a winter mulch to help avoid pigweed in the future.
In order to keep those seeds buried, you should also till extremely shallowly in the spring, only bringing up a small amount of soil. Mulch again because when you till, you might bring up some pigweed seed. Five layers of moist newspaper laid over the soil, then three to six inches of mulch.
Pigweed can also be consumed, but only when it is fresh and fragile (and when taken from a pesticide-free area). The young leaves of Amaranthus blitum, often known as amaranth, are plentiful in June and should be consumed due to their high nutritional value. These greens may make a delightful addition to a tossed salad and are as vitamin dense as carrots or beets. They can be prepared similarly to spinach. The black seeds of this plant were once crushed into a meal by some Native Americans for baking.
Chickweed (Stellaria sp. & Cerastium spp.)
Winter annual common chickweed (Stellaria media) flourishes in moist environments. It serves as a reservoir for plant viruses and insect pests.
Common chickweed can generate about 800 seeds when unimpeded by other plants and can take up to 8 years to completely disappear. Since chickweed grows best in moist, chilly climates, it frequently emerges before spring crops might face stiff competition. It may so reduce the amount of vegetables you can harvest.
Common chickweed rarely grows higher than 2 inches and frequently creates dense mats. The flowers have five white petals, and they are tiny. Although common chickweed may grow in a variety of soils, it thrives in those with high nitrogen content and a neutral pH. In acidic (low pH) soils, it doesn’t grow as well.
As long as you pull the weed when it’s young and before it flowers, annual chickweed is thankfully easier to manage. Locating it can be difficult in the little window of time between germination and flowering, so keep an eye on it and remove it completely to prevent regrowth.
Keep in mind that this is a “winter annual.” Therefore, keep an eye out for chickweed seedlings on the soil surface during the late fall and winter. Once found, remove them by shallow cultivation or hand pulling. We wouldn’t advise using chemical controls on this winter annual beyond spring.
By reducing light and acting as a physical barrier, using an organic mulch, such as wood chips, will lessen the amount of weed seeds that germinate. There are also synthetic mulches like landscaping fabrics that can be used. They should be covered with an additional layer of mulch in planted areas (rock or bark). Black plastic can also be used in vegetable gardens, both as a mulch between rows and for sowing seeds or transplants.
Chickweed can be eaten. The flowers, stems, and leaves can all be consumed fresh or cooked when they are young. It gives any meal a subtle, spinach-like flavor. Both a tonic and a tea can be prepared from chickweed.
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)
Oh, how we adore dandelions in the spring with their brilliant yellow heads. The yellow flower clusters that rise from the heart of this perennial weed’s rosettes of leaves are in clusters. Dandelions can be beneficial to bees even though they are not a favorite food source (and a poor quality source of protein). Yes, a lawn covered in dandelions is better for bees than a lawn free of weeds if you care about bees, but a garden with a diversity of plants and no dandelions is far superior.
Dandelions will eventually take over any ecosystem, including your garden, decorative plants, and grasslands. Dandelions not only produce wind-borne seed, but also vegetatively multiply due to their extensive tap roots. Therefore, you can be sure that the plant will reappear until you deeply cut the root into the dirt.
Because established plants have a deep tap root system, removing mature dandelions by hand-pulling or hoeing is frequently ineffective (unless done repeatedly over a lengthy period of time). Dandelions that are still young should be pulled by their base and gently wiggled, as you need to draw out their deep taproot from the earth. Alternately, dig them out using a hand trowel. In order to prevent any pieces from returning, try to pull out the entire dandelion root at once.
A healthy (and competitive) grass will impede dandelion infestation if you maintain one. The establishment of new dandelion seedlings is hindered by dense turfgrass and ornamentals shading the soil surface. Mowing can be used to control many broadleaf weeds, but not dandelion. Mowing will have little impact on control since it develops from a basal rosette that is lower than a mower blade can get to.
Mulches made of wood chips or bark are useful for a garden bed if they are kept at a depth of at least 3 inches (and replaced over time). By limiting the amount of light that can reach the soil, landscaping fabrics can be used as a particularly efficient form of mulch for managing seedlings. To prevent any plant development, cover the area with a polypropylene, polyester, or black polyethylene fabric (plastic tarp).
Before they set seed, lone new dandelion plants should be grubed out (removed by digging out the entire plant, taproot and all) in fence rows, roadsides, flower beds, and in turfgrass. For the purpose of removing individual weeds and their roots with the least amount of soil disturbance, dandelion knives and other similar specialist equipment are available. For several months, keep an eye on the region to make sure the taproot has been completely removed.
