Saintpaulia spp., or African violets, are prized for their lovely flowers and varied forms. These characteristics make them perfect houseplants because they can grow and bloom in direct or strong artificial light. African violets can be grown vegetatively from cuttings by rooting them; if a leaf’s petiole, or leaf stem, is still intact, it can grow roots when planted in the right kind of rooting medium. In either water or soil, African violet leaf cuttings can successfully develop roots.
African violets—can they survive in water?
A clone of the parent plant can normally be obtained by growing an African violet in water from its leaves, while some multicolored violets will produce plants with flowers of a single hue. To start new plants, select African violet leaves that are young and healthy. Cut the leaf off at the stem, leaving approximately two inches, and put it in a container with a small neck so it may hang freely and stay dry. It takes a month for roots to form. A little plantlet with its own crown will eventually develop.
Can you hydroponically grow African violets?
In order for these plants to form robust roots, the “wicking action” of the LECA stones generates the ideal balance of moisture and air in the root zone. Healthy plants with large, vibrant, and colorful blossoms are produced by strong roots!
Always choose a hydroponic planter that is a bit smaller than the previous grow pot because African violets don’t appreciate having their feet wet. Large pots retain too much moisture and hold it for too long. Recall that for roots to grow, air is just as important as water.
1. Soak LECA pebbles (2–3 TBS per gallon of water) in KLN Rooting Solution for several hours or overnight.

Which is preferable, repotting African violets in soil or water?
While growing African Violets in soil avoids the need to plant them in soil, growing them in water is far more enjoyable since you can watch the roots and tiny plants develop up close. It is quite acceptable to inspect the plant to see if the roots have developed every 5 minutes. Don’t give up, though; the first symptoms of growth may not appear for some time. Even if you think the bottom end of the leaf looks a little strange, as long as the leaf appears healthy, you are on the correct route (almost like it would be decomposing a little).
Simply submerge your leaf (including petiole) in water after cutting it. Choose the proper container because the leaf shouldn’t actually come into contact with the water.
Room temperature should be reached by the water. Most of the time, tap water is fine, but you might choose filtered water if you think your tap water is mineral-heavy. Unless it gets murky, you won’t actually need to change the water too often. Refill as necessary, and after a few weeks, change the water.
Put your cutting in a location with plenty of indirect light, but avoid too much direct sunlight.
Now, just wait and watch. Depending on the season and the leaf, you should start to notice the first hints of roots sprouting after a week or two. However, it may take longer; these may take their time, much as the propagation of a ZZ plant may take some time. Keep in mind that roots may grow as long as the leaf is strong and healthy.
First Root after Two Weeks
Our leaf developed its first root! The roots hadn’t yet appeared on the other two. A few days later, the second one began displaying roots. However, the third one took an additional two weeks (this was an ancient leaf).
The first two’s roots are developing well. The third one does appear pretty mushy and brown in the photos, but it will still produce roots (soon).
All three of them eventually developed roots, and they are all becoming stronger every day! Daily new growth is apparent, making it a fascinating process to watch.
Months Later
About two months later, the first young plants began to emerge (in what seemed like an overnight thing). Things will start moving more quickly from this point on because the roots are good and solid.
Weeks More
There are a ton of perfectly grown young plants present after another three weeks or so. It’s interesting to note that the oldest leaf, which took the longest to form roots, also generated the most young plants.
You can either plant your water-propagated African violets in soil when they reach this size, or you can put them back in the water and wait a little while longer.
Separate the Baby Plant From Leaf
Gently detach the petiole of the old leaf from the newborn plant’s roots. You should be able to remove the old leaf with your fingers, but if you feel uneasy or worried that you could harm the new plant, you can also cut it off. Use only sterile tools, please.
Put the young plant in the ground. You can purchase soil specifically made for African violets, but regular potting soil is also acceptable.
Place the young plant in soil with care, covering any exposed roots with earth. Do not completely drench the soil in water.
We like to place the baby seedlings into a bag for a time as the final stage in plant propagation. In addition to retaining moisture, this will deter any possible pests. Your newborn plant may appear a little under the weather for the first few days, but it should quickly recover and resume growing.

Are African violets water-loving plants?
Generally speaking, African violets just require a small amount of water to keep the soil moist—never wet. Your African violets will be more vulnerable to dangerous infections like Pythium, Root Rot, and Crown Rot if they receive too much water.
Where should an African violet be placed?
Because they require dry leaves, African violets are only grown indoors in North America. If you want the finest color and flowers, grow your plants in bright, indirect light. The optimal location for a plant stand is three feet away from a window that faces west or south. When placed directly next to north or east-facing windows, plants will still grow, but their leaves will be thin and spindly, and they will be less likely to flower. About African Violets
African violets, as their name suggests, are indigenous to East Africa and come from the subtropical rainforests of Tanzania and Kenya. German colonial commander Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire recognized these plants in 1892 and returned to Germany with seeds. Saintpaulia became the name of the genus, although Streptocarpus, a new genus, has lately been assigned to the plants. How to Plant African Violets

General Care
- Some kinds are more tolerant of cooler circumstances, but many prefer warm environments (65F/18C or warmer). In any event, avoid having them near drafty windows during the winter.
- As they get bigger, plants should be moved to bigger containers, although keeping African violets slightly root-bound might help them blossom. Wilted leaves are one indication that your violet needs to be replanted.

A genus of plants in the Gesneriad family are known as African violets (also known as Saintpaulia). Many of the species, which Baron von St Paul discovered in 1892 and gave their botanical name to, are still alive and well in Tanzania and Kenya’s Eastern Arc Mountains. Make them big.

For “Chimera” kinds of violets, leaf cuttings will not result in plantlets that are identical to the parent plant. These are often “pinwheel flowered varieties” with wide, multicolored side and center stripes. These can only be reproduced by suckers, are genetically more rare, and are highly odd. Leaf chimeras are cultivars with leaves that can only be propagated by suckers. Leaf chimera variation is extremely uncommon and is unaffected by alterations in temperature, habitat, or age. The same maintenance is required as for other African violets. There are chimeric African violets in both small and regular sizes.
Let them develop. The easiest African violets to grow and blossom, especially for beginners, are those that trail. They are naturally expanding, branching plants that are free to pursue their own interests. No need to eliminate suckers in order to maintain symmetry or promote blooming. These violets grow additional crowns at will, without degrading their beauty or bloom. In fact, this raises the likelihood of flowering! You have the option to spread them out in little pots or hang them as baskets in windows.
‘Native’ grow them. All contemporary hybrids can be traced back to the Saintpaulia species of African violets. In east Africa, many are still growing on the sides of hills. Some species are only found in the collections of collectors since the majority are endangered.
The basics of African violet care:
- Light. For healthy growth and blossom, there must be enough light. Be sure to offer bright but not direct sunlight. Place a two-tube fluorescent fixture 12–18 inches above plants if you’re growing things under artificial lighting, and leave it on for 12–13 hours each day. Provide more light if the foliage seems healthy and expanding but there are no blossoms. Light may be too bright if there are lots of blossoms but pale or stiff foliage.

- Atmosphere. Like you, African violets prefer temperate temperatures and humidity. They also feel at ease if you do. Violets like temperatures between 65 and 75 °F, but they may endure temperatures well outside of this range.
- Soil. Utilize a bog-based, “a soilless mixture with at least 30 to 50 percent coarse perlite and/or vermiculite. Brand-name “African violets don’t necessarily do well in violet soils. As a general rule, the soil should contain more perlite the wetter you maintain it. Avoid soils that appear overly thick, dark, or rich, or that really contain topsoil! There is no need for additives like manure or dense compost.
- Grooming. Do not allow extra crowns (suckers), with the exception of trailers. Single-crowned plants should be grown for African violets. With little more than five rows of leaves, most African violets look their finest. An excessive amount of older, lower leaves are not necessary and will not encourage blooming because flowers only develop from fresh growth.
- Potting. Every 6 to 12 months, repot all of your plants. When mature, the majority of common African violets cultivated as houseplants will need a 4-5 pot. Use a pot with a diameter of no more than 2 1/2 for minis and semiminis. The size of the root ball dictates the size of the pot. Because they have rather shallow roots, African violets, pick “pots of the azalea variety that are slightly shallower than they are wide.
- Pests. Many of the same pests that affect other plants can also harm African violets. The best medicine is always prevention.
