Can Succulents Get Spider Mites

Spider mites harm succulents and cacti alike by draining the juices from the plants. Webbing and tiny brown dots on the new growth of succulent plants are the first indicators that you have spider mites. These small “insects” are more closely linked to spiders than to actual insects. When seen with the naked eye, they resemble dust.

In reality, red spider mites are reddish-brown in color, and they like hot, dry environments. Misting and above watering might lessen their occurrence since they don’t like dampness. The innocuous, much larger red mite, which is a harmless predator mite, should not be mistaken with these red spider mites. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using a miticide to completely get rid of these mites from the plant. Phytoseiulus persimilis is another predator that can be utilized as a biological control. In addition to needing temperatures above 70 F (21 C), this predator finds it challenging to keep a balance between prey and predator.

There are other pests besides spider mites that harm succulent plants. Eriophyid mites are those that feed on aloe and also affect other species including Haworthia and Gasteri. These mites have two pairs of legs as opposed to the four sets of legs found on spider mites.

The poison that this mite injects into the tissue causes galling or other aberrant development as it eats. Aloe succulent mite damage is irreparable in aloe plants, and the plant needs to be thrown out. To avoid contaminating other plants, put sick plants in a garbage bag or burn them. Use a miticide on the plant as directed by the manufacturer if the infestation is not severe. Aloes that can withstand freezing temperatures can be exposed to them to kill the mites.

The two-spotted mite, another type of mite, prefers to eat yucca. This mite appears pink, yellow-green, or red under a microscope, with two dark dots on its body. They lack wings and antennae but have eight legs. Tan or gray stippling of foliage is a surefire marker of the two-spotted mite’s existence.

A fine webbing can once more be observed on the undersides of leaves as the infestation gets worse. The plant will perish if the infestation is bad. Mite population growth can be slowed down by using insecticidal soap and spraying the plant area to maintain a high humidity level. #1. Rubbing Alcohol

Spray the succulent’s leaves with a mixture of one part rubbing alcohol and one part water. With this procedure, you won’t hurt any other insects or the plant itself and the mites won’t be able to tolerate it.

#2. Beneficial Bugs

Speaking of predatory insects, you may also get rid of spider mites by using commercially available beneficial insects like ladybugs, lacewings, and even predatory mites that act as natural enemies to any mite infestation. Release these predators at low to medium infestation to get the best outcomes.

These spider mites are effectively snacked on by a predator mite. These anti-spider-mite mites, which come in at least three different varieties, will eradicate any mite infestation without harming your succulent plants. They are offered at nurseries and garden centers.

#3. Liquid Dish Soap

When it comes to making water wetter than it was, liquid dish soap or detergent is very successful. As a result, the water’s skin, which creates surface tension on smaller insects like spider mites, would erupt and essentially drown them. Simply combine it with water in a sprayer to utilize them.

After that, simply spray your succulents repeatedly with soap water to suffocate the pests, their larvae, and their eggs without endangering or deteriorating the health of your prized plants. Usually, a few drops of soap are plenty. It doesn’t need to be very frothy.

#4. Neem Oil

Another chemical-free mite insecticide that won’t harm beneficial insects like bees and mite predators or earthworms that improve the fertility of your garden soil is neem oil. Succulent houseplants, shady-growing veggies, and fruits can all be treated with it without risk.

For the best results, you can even combine neem oil with your liquid dish soap spray because it drowns out the spider mites in two distinct ways. An Indian evergreen tree called neem, Azadirachta indica, is the source of the oil. It is a vegetable oil produced from the tree’s crushed seeds and fruits.

#5. Diatomaceous Earth

The last but not least is food-grade diatomaceous earth, not pool-grade (DE). The terrifying anti-mite dust known as DE is safe for your succulents and other plants but is a sure way to kill spider mites. Simply sprinkle the mixture on your infected succulent to watch the mites disappear in large numbers.

After that, just clip the succulent’s browning areas to prevent it from withering away. DE is effective because it contains razor-sharp, snowflake-like diatoms that tear the mite apart at the cellular level. They wreak internal havoc by entering the crevices between their joints, tearing them apart, and then drying them up into husks.

How can I tell whether the spider mites on my succulent are present?

Symptoms of Spider Mites

  • Once a week, look under the leaves for tiny red, brown, or yellow dots.
  • On the underside of leaves, there are tiny white blotches or holes.
  • The leaves will eventually change from white to yellow to brown and fall off if the infestation gets worse.

How did the spider mites arrive on my houseplant?

How can spider mites on cacti be removed?

Predatory Mites

Introducing predatory mites that feed on spider mite eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults is another efficient method for getting rid of spider mites on cacti plants.

These predators will eliminate spider mites without endangering pollinators, other insects, or the natural enemies of spiders.

To enhance spider mite mortality, you must keep releasing predatory mites every several days.

High-Pressure Water

Dish Soap

You can also use dish soap with water at a ratio of one teaspoon per quart (liter) of water to cure spider mites.

Then, fill an atomizer or spray bottle with the mixture and begin dousing cactus plants in spider mites until they are totally covered.

Dish soap will suffocate and kill spider mites by rupturing the integrity of their exoskeleton, which ultimately leads to desiccation and death.

Diatomaceous Earth

Dusting your plant’s leaves with diatomaceous earth is another spider mite treatment option you can employ if the spider mites on your cacti plants are still in the nymphal or larval stage.

They will become dehydrated and die as a result, leaving other insects, such pollinators, alone. This spider mite treatment must be used again every two weeks until all spider mites are eliminated.

Mouthwash

You can also use mouthwash mixed with water at a ratio of one teaspoon of soap per quart (liter) of water as a treatment for spider mites.

Spray the mixture on cactus plants until they are thoroughly covered in spider mites by placing it in an atomizer or spray bottle.

By destroying the integrity of the spider mites’ exoskeleton, mouthwash will suffocate and kill them, causing desiccation and eventual death.

Are there spider mites in the soil?

Spider mites will infest both the soil and the plants in your garden if the earth is dry, as it has been recently in most gardens in Guelph. It can be tempting to apply a pesticide to the soil to quickly eradicate spider mites, but doing so would be a serious rookie error.

Millions of living things inhabit the soil, many of which are advantageous to the mites and even act as predators. You kill the good with the evil when you cover the ground in insecticide. In fact, this can have the reverse effect of what you wanted because the mites will suddenly have less predators, which will allow their populations to grow even more uncontrollably.

The spider mite’s nemesis is moisture in the soil. To make the soil uninhabitable for mites, keep the plants close to infected soil well hydrated with cold water. On the other side, your plants will be grateful.

What do spider mite-infested plants look like?

Let’s examine how to identify these pests. The first thing you’ll probably notice is stippling or patterns of silvery dots on your plant’s leaves. If you look closely, you can notice tiny, delicate webs with what appear to be tiny white spots all over them in the corners of stems or under leaves. Spider mites are those.
