In Fiji, the Crown of Thorns Sea Star (COTS) is called as “Bula.” It’s a big, spiky star with up to 15 legs that eats live coral invertebrates and leaves behind white, lifeless skeletons.
These quickly become covered in fuzzy algae, resulting in a lifeless, unsightly section of reef.
How many crown-of-thorns starfish have been killed?
In just seven days, volunteer divers destroyed around 47,000 crown-of-thorns starfish on the southern Great Barrier Reef, setting a new record.
Thousands of starfish were discovered eating their way through areas of Swains Reef, which is 250 kilometers off the coast of central Queensland, only a few months ago.
On the nine-day excursion, Gladstone charter operator Bruce Stobo led a party of 25 volunteer divers.
Mr Stobo, who volunteered his catamaran to the effort, said, “They tell me, unofficially, that it’s the biggest amount of starfish that’s been killed in a single journey in that period.”
The infestation was discovered during a study by Queensland Parks and Wildlife in November of last year, but the divers were unprepared for what they found.
“We had professional divers on board who had been working up north, including one who had been doing it full-time for eight months and stated it was the most he’d ever seen in one location.”
How many arms do crown-of-thorns starfish have?
The crown of thorns starfish, Acanthaster planci, is one of the world’s largest sea stars, found throughout the Indo-Pacific (up to 45 cm across). The crown of thorns starfish is disc-shaped with many arms (up to 21) covered with venomous spines, unlike the usual starfish with five arms. Acanthaster planci is a corallivore, meaning it eats living coral tissue. Digestive enzymes are secreted by the stomach, which liquefy the coral tissue, which is subsequently absorbed. The coral colony is left devoid of live tissue after this procedure, and only the white skeletons of the colony remain. The skeletons become more weak and brittle without the live tissue, and they are frequently colonized by non-reef-building organisms like algae.
A single crown of thorns starfish can destroy 6-10 square meters of living reef every year, making them ferocious predators. The eye possessed a narrow, horizontal vision field of about 100° wide and 30° high, with maximal sensitivity in the blue region of the visual spectrum (470 nm). Crown-of-thorns starfish have the best spatial resolution of any starfish investigated to date, with roughly 250 ommatidia in each adult compound eye and average interommatidial angles of 8°. Furthermore, with a flicker fusion frequency of only 0.60.7 Hz, they have the slowest vision of any animal studied thus far. This could be adaptive, as quick eyesight isn’t needed to detect fixed objects like reefs. In summary, the eyes appear to be designed to detect massive, dark, motionless objects against a deep blue background. Our findings reveal that the crown-of-thorns starfish’s visual sense is significantly more complex than previously thought, and that it is critical for orienting and locating suitable habitats.
What kills crown-of-thorns starfish?
Scientists have discovered that a swarm of coral-eating starfish that has generated panic due to their seemingly relentless attack on the Great Barrier Reef may be killed off with a simple dosage of household vinegar.
Crown-of-thorns starfish, along with cyclones, are thought to be one of the two main causes of the Great Barrier Reef’s rapid loss of coral cover during the last 30 years.
When the conditions are favorable, such as when phytoplankton, their food source, becomes more abundant due to floods washing fertilizers and other contaminants from land into the water, the starfish can become plague-like.
A recent starfish outbreak has chewed through significant portions of the reef, pushing scientists to come up with novel measures to stop the disease.
Researchers at James Cook University have discovered that a single injection of vinegar kills the coral-eating starfish completely.
All starfish given 20ml of vinegar died within 48 hours, according to university experiments. The study will now move on to sea trials.
Currently, to kill a starfish, divers must inject 10 to 12ml of ox bile into it. Unlike vinegar, which is readily accessible in the grocery, ox bile is expensive, requires many licenses, and must be combined to the proper concentration.
However, the breakthrough isn’t a vinegary silver bullet; there’s still no other way to deliver the vinegar except by injecting starfish one by one.
The lead author of the JCU report, Lisa Bostrom-Einarsson, said more research was needed to guarantee the vinegar did not harm other sea creatures.
“There’s no reason to believe it won’t work or be unsafe,” she said, “but we have to be sure.”
“It is estimated that there are between four and twelve million starfish on the Great Barrier Reef alone, with each female producing approximately 65 million eggs in a single reproductive season.”
“With two full-time boat crews, they managed to kill roughly 350,000 people last year.” While culling them all that way would be impossible, we know that continuous efforts can conserve certain reefs.”
Crown-of-thorns eradication efforts are funded by the federal government, with 27 maritime tourism companies and two community groups certified to eradicate them.
However, according to the most recent report card on the Great Barrier Reef’s health, targets for reducing chemical runoff are not being met, making future outbreaks more likely.
