Are Springtails Bad For Houseplants

Only in damp, moist, or extremely humid environments are springtails common. They consume algae, fungi, and decomposing plant materials. This covers areas indoors like kitchens, bathrooms, wet basements, plant pot soil, and the area around window frames. The house is not harmed by springtails, who are harmless. They just act as a pest by simply being there. Overwatered houseplants in pots may have a large population of springtails. They don’t hurt established plants, though.

Are springtails beneficial for houseplants?

The common indoor springtail consumes peat, pieces of bark, and decaying roots for food. Their preferred environment for reproduction is damp, organic matter-rich compost that hardly ever experiences dry spells. When the soil experiences periods of drought between waterings, “Cactus & Succulent” compost is less likely to maintain a significant infestation.

Since they only consume the components of the compost and spare the plant’s healthy tissue, springtails are completely harmless to both indoor and outdoor plants. Indoor gardeners frequently eliminate infestations merely from a visual standpoint because it isn’t appealing to see tiny silver or brown creatures scurrying across the soil. Additionally, springtails pose no threat to people by biting or dispersing infections or diseases.

My plants: Will springtails eat them?

In the process of enriching the soil, springtails consume bacteria, fungi, lichens, algae, and decaying plant matter. A few carnivorous species consume other springtails and tiny invertebrates, while others feed on carrion. Some species occasionally harm plants in pots or greenhouses by eating plant roots or nibbling on sensitive young plants. But most of the time, springtails are advantageous to plants. For instance, several species aid in the spread of advantageous fungi on plant roots.

With changes in temperature, moisture, and food availability, springtail populations grow and decline. Although they might be common on city lawns, springtails prefer the shaded places that are abundant in humus and decaying leaves. 10,000 organisms can live in a cubic foot of soil, and millions can be discovered in a single backyard. It is believed that common species reproduce numerous times a year. When the weather is good, populations can grow swiftly because of their high reproduction rates.

Hundreds of springtails will suddenly appear inside of homes after climbing up the sides of buildings and entering through cracks in the brickwork or around doors and windows. Springtails can’t be moved from one house to another in boxes or on clothing because once inside a residence, they typically perish rapidly from low humidity and a lack of food. Springtails, however, can survive for a very long time on interior potted plants or infested structures.

Springtails can fall in large numbers into swimming pools as well, where their water-resistant bodies float on the surface and resemble pollen or algae. The skimmer nets used to clean swimming pools often seem alive with the insects’ jumping and crawling hordes.

Are springtails beneficial for plants in pots?

Consider this: When you glance at your prized plant, (gasp!) you notice these small, white, rectangular bugs darting around in the substrate or underneath the pot. They might even be moving on top of the water.

Bugs are gross, right? Wrong. Most likely, these are springtails, which are helpful insects that some even buy to work as a “cleanup crew for vivariums and terrariums.” Let’s explore how to spot these tiny ones and why they are a benefit rather than a reason to be concerned!

Springtails, which have six legs and move about like a tiny Tigger, are not insects; rather, they belong to the Collembola order, which is distinct from insects. In case you’re interested, the terms “Collembola” are derived from two Greek words: kolla, which means glue, and embola, which means wedge. The collophore, a tube structure behind the back legs that springtails may stretch to utilize for grooming and to help with aim during a jump, is the source of this intriguing name. The forcula, which is located on the end of the abdomen, is the part of the body that is used to assist these young children in “springing.” This forked structure, as its name suggests, aids the springtail in moving up to 300 body lengths away. If you could jump that far, just think! However, you would need a hydraulic stomach fork device, so perhaps not.

Springtails are extremely tiny, measuring only one millimeter in length. However, they have rather long antennae, so you should be able to see them and be able to recognize them.

Recall how I said you might find springtails floating on the surface of the water? That is due to the fact that they have a cuticle, I suppose. It’s not like the skin around your nails, or any other portion of your skin, or the outer layer of your hair. They occasionally move around on top of water foraging or just hanging out since this sort of cuticle is a hard coating that repels water.

Let’s now discuss what they eat, why it’s beneficial to observe them, and how they can help you understand how your plants are doing.

As detritivores and microbivores, springtails consume decaying organic debris (plants, animals, excrement), bacteria, mold, fungus, and other types of dead matter. Therefore, terrarium and vivarium cleanup staff are really helpful if you have one. The only problem is that they require humidity to exist and flourish, which explains why they can be found in the potting media or under pots of plants that are kept with damp soil or that have been overwatered. Which is a fantastic lead-in to discussing how springtails may be used to determine how effectively you are caring for your plants. You may be watering your plants too much if you notice springtails in the potting soil of plants that are intended to dry out between waterings. Additionally, it could be a good time to make sure the root ball is looking fine.

Personally, I enjoy keeping springtails and currently have many cultures active that I have used to seed terrariums and vivariums. I have robust springtail colonies in my treefrog, toad, plant-filled, Otala lactea (milk snail), and isopod terrariums. They not only consume fallen leaves and keep mold to an absolute minimum, but they also aid in the breakdown of animal waste and any uneaten food. Their extremely little, yet useful to the soil, waste is another advantage of having them.

Do springtails aid plant growth?

Springtails, which can be found in a variety of settings including pastures, compost pits, and agricultural grounds, are not typically thought of as much of a pest. They can be bothersome organisms, although they are rarely regarded as pests that inflict financial harm.

Springtails are typically seen as helpful organisms since they contribute to the nutrient cycle by eating and excreting, which aids in the breakdown of decomposing plant matter and enhances the health and structure of the soil.

However, one springtail species (Protaphorura fimata) feeds on the sprouting lettuce and broccoli seeds in the vegetable fields of northern Salinas Valley, California, resulting in poor crop stand.

Several other springtail species have been linked to feeding on weeds, sugar beet, and bean seeds that are in the process of sprouting. Additionally, various plant species’ leaves, notably lucerne and clover, is attacked by the lucerne flea (Sminthurus viridis) and garden springtail (Bourletiella hortensis).

physiological traits. The springtail that preys on sprouting lettuce seeds is less than 2.5 mm long, whitish, and devoid of eyes and the furcular, the jumping organ found in the majority of springtails. This means that instead of jumping when startled, it coils up.

Reproduction. If this springtail reproduces after mating is unknown. It has been noted that a closely related species can procreate without mating.

Origins. Despite the presence of the same species throughout Europe, no detections from agricultural regions have been made. Furthermore, it’s unclear whether this springtail was brought from Europe to the United States or the other way around.

Timing. The most vulnerable stage to springtail feeding is when seeds are germinating (one or two-day-old lettuce seedlings), which stunts seedling growth. Thus, it would seem that lettuce is less vulnerable to springtail feeding damage once the roots are established in the soil.

Since the plants are more vulnerable to damage during the germination phase, springtail monitoring should begin before the seeds are planted to ascertain whether the pest is present in the soil.

the part temperature plays. In general, insects don’t move around much when it’s colder. Although seeds develop slowly in the colder temperatures, the springtail is active and feeds on plant tissue at temperatures as low as 41F.

This indicates that until lettuce seedlings are established in the milder temperatures, especially in spring and early summer, they may need to be protected from springtail for an extended period of time with further insecticide applications (January to May).

A single insecticide application made at the plant during the later summer months may be sufficient to control springtails, and additional applications may not be necessary.

Baits. When placed in the top layer of the soil, beet or potato slice baits attract springtail; as a result, these baits could be used to track springtail activity in the soil. The baits may not catch springtails if the soil is dry, and their activity may go unnoticed.

influence of soil moisture For uniform seed germination and seedling establishment, lettuce fields receive heavy irrigation at least once before and for up to three weeks after seeding. High soil moisture levels will encourage springtail feeding on the sprouting lettuce seeds. Before lettuce seeds are sown in the Salinas Valley, fields are pre-irrigated to help with bed shaping and land preparation. When the field had recently been irrigated or following a rain event, it has been found that the springtail density rose from the subsurface of soil. It’s possible that this cultural approach, which maintains high moisture levels for seed germination on the subsurface profiles of the soil, is promoting the quicker expansion of springtail populations.

Controls. According to studies, springtail management may not be too challenging. Chlorpyrifos, tolfenpyrad, and spinetoram, as well as the pyrethroid insecticides zeta-cypermethrin, bifenthrin, and lambda-cyhalothrin, and neonicotinoid insecticides dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, and clothianidin, were successful in suppressing springtail feeding on sprouting lettuce seeds.

These insecticides ought to be applied as part of an appropriate monitoring program as an IPM strategy (i.e., using beet or potato slice baits).

Are plant roots consumed by springtails?

How to manage these tiny, swarming insects both inside and outside without using harmful chemical sprays!

Small, wingless, and moisture-loving springtails look for dampness both indoors and outside. They usually congregate in close groups called dense swarms. They can rise into the air as high as several inches when disturbed, producing clearly discernible clouds.

They can be found outside in damp organic matter such as decomposing leaves, decaying straw, and wet soil. They eat algae, fungus, and mold.

As soils dry, insects seek out moister environments, which frequently leads them into homes where they congregate in greenhouses, garages, basements, wet flooring, carpets, under kitchen sinks, and in the soil of houseplants in pots.

Identification

Due to their internal chewing mechanism, they are no longer regarded as real insects. Insects have chewing parts on the outside. The Collembola order is composed of springtails. Although they can grow to be up to 1/16 inch long, they are only a small portion of this size before maturing. They come in black, white, and various tones of gray and brown.

When springtails congregate in big groups that resemble balls or fabric swatches, they become noticeable. They become considerably more noticeable when exposed or agitated because they appear to spring into the air all at once. The external body component called as a furcula, which is folded under its abdomen, is used for this leaping. The little bug is popped into the air a few inches when the furcula releases it.

Life Cycle

Springtails breed swiftly, taking only four to six weeks to develop from an egg into an adult. The soil where mature guys live contains packets of sperm cells. These are either picked up in packages or individually by females as they lay their eggs. Within five to ten days, depending on the temperature circumstances, the eggs hatch.

The nymphs look like the adults. They go through multiple phases before becoming adults during the five or six weeks they spend as nymphs, molting and becoming larger in each. Springtails may last the entire season outside while breeding repeatedly. They can survive for up to a year indoors.

Damage

Springtails primarily cause plants little harm and are a nuisance pest. They can reduce a plant’s hardiness and will nibble on roots in the soil where they are situated. But they rarely cause significant harm.

These essentially invisible insects are generally safe for people to handle and do not sting or bite. However, they make for an unwelcome house guest, and finding a swarm of them under a carpet or near a basement drain necessitates cleansing to avoid continuous colonies or heaps of unhygienic dead insects.

Springtails are a sign of dampness in your bedroom, bathroom, or carpets and can be a sign of more serious issues like leaky pipes or roofs, improperly sealed tubs and sinks, or porous basement walls. House repairs and other improvements are frequently needed to treat pest infestations.

In freshly constructed homes that were exposed to rain or high humidity during framing and were not given enough time to properly dry out, springtails will congregate inside the walls. The presence of bugs inside walls may be a sign that mold and fungus are possible.

Around outdoor swimming pools, where they frequently cover the water’s surface as they decay, springtails can be a serious annoyance. Although they pose no threat to people, this bug muck detracts from the enjoyment of swimming in the pool. They might be challenging to skim due to the creature’s small size and large numbers.

Hydroponics and Indoor Garden Control

  • Indoor growing areas are particularly prone to springtail infestations due of their high moisture content. Pests congregate at exposed plant root crowns and at the edge of grow tanks in hydroponic growing systems. Populations can be kept under control with periodic, careful examinations and removal.
  • Even though it’s frequently asserted that springtails leave minimal visible damage, they will eat moist plant debris and roots, which will result in “leaf stipling (yellowing) and other damages to development and vitality. However, a lot of growers prefer to endure them than treating them. If you decide to live beside them, make sure you have accurately recognized them and aren’t confusing them with a nuisance like spider mites that can do significant harm.
  • Clean up pest populations that have gathered in your grow area’s drains, near drains, and other wet areas. With a shop-vac, large colonies on floors or on stands can be removed.
  • Use an OMRI-listed for organic production ingredient, such as azadirachtin, an antifeedant and insect growth regulator (IGR) that reduces pests through starvation and growth disruption, if springtails have become such a nuisance that they must be treated.

Potted Plants (Soil)

  • In homes, springtails can enter through vent pipes, open doors and windows, window screens, and potted plants. Particularly as the weather gets drier outside, they are drawn to indoor wetness. They could be drawn to light and enter through windows, beneath doors, or foundation gaps.
  • By keeping leaves, grass, and other organic debris away from the foundation of your home, you can prevent springtail infestations. If possible, fill in all of the foundation’s cracks, even those that extend below the soil level. A tight seal should be present around all windows and doors.
  • Use diatomaceous earth and crawling insect killers to keep pests away from potential entry points.
  • Plants in pots frequently have springtails in the soil. Test the potting soil with your thumbs and look for springing on any plant you intend to bring home. It is important to thoroughly inspect any lichen or other soil covers that serve as the bugs’ organic food sources. If plants exhibit symptoms of excessive moisture, exercise extra caution. Place house plants in quarantine, ideally outside, to let the soil thoroughly dry before bringing them inside if you suspect insect activity.
  • The best technique to handle contaminated pots already in the house is to let soil dry as completely as possible.
  • Spread Safer Use diatomaceous earth to assist potted soils dry up and to keep springtails away.
  • Utilize a non-toxic, biodegradable soil drench to kill and repel insects if infestations in potted plants continue. One or more applications may be necessary.
  • They may gather in large numbers on the exterior of a structure after a hot day, increasing the possibility of an indoor infestation. Use a wet-dry shop-vac with some soapy water in the collecting tank to vacuum up an infestation if you see it outside or indoors.
  • Use fans to completely dry any section of the home, including (if it’s possible) the interior of walls where springtails have been discovered. Fix roof leaks, siding cracks, and any other areas where water could enter the house.
  • In order to prevent mold and other growth from serving as a food source, keep the spaces surrounding sink faucets and drains clear and clean. Clean the hair and muck from under sink drains. Clean your drain pipes as completely as you can and rinse them with vinegar if you think there may be springtails inside. (Never dump pesticides of any kind down the drain.)
  • House plant soil, particularly that which contains lichen or moss, can serve as a breeding ground for springtails. Before bringing any potted houseplants indoors, look for indications of an infestation. Don’t overwater once you’re inside the house. Between waterings, let the soil entirely dry out to discourage their presence.

Outdoor Control

  • There is minimal need to control springtails outdoors unless their numbers become a nuisance because they rarely harm plants. Outdoor application of insecticides is ineffective against this bug and won’t give long-term control by itself, according to the comprehensive Integrated Pest Management website at the University of California.
  • Remove the bugs’ preferred habitat, which is damp organic materials, from gardens and landscapes to deter them from appearing. Colonies that flourish beneath compacted mulch are safeguarded. Wait until the pests have disappeared before adding compost and other organic material to the soil.
  • When soils are entirely dry before being watered, weeds can’t establish themselves and are driven out in search of moister lands. In vegetable or decorative gardens where springtails are present, water less frequently and wait until the soil is completely dry before watering.
  • Expecting to completely eradicate them where wet conditions naturally persist is unrealistic. By disturbing eggs and exposing nymphs to drier surface conditions, frequent shifting of compost and straw mulch piles helps control the population of these insects. But many will escape due to their size.
