Inspect yuca for any cracks or evidence of mold before purchasing. The yuca flesh should be white all around. Breaking off the end of the yuca is the only way to see the meat. (It may appear strange and perhaps inappropriate, but you’re only ensuring that you’re getting good yuca.) If the flesh isn’t white, the yuca is rotten and should be thrown out.) If the yuca has black spots, lines, or discolouration running through it, it is past its prime. You may simply chop away any discolouration or patches that are limited to one area of the yuca.
It took me forever to peel yuca the first time I tried! I didn’t have any idea. I figured it would peel like a potato, so I used a potato peeler on it. Big blunder! It took an eternity, and by the time I finished, my hands were in excruciating pain. I wanted to face-palm myself when I finally figured out how to peel yuca properly (thanks, abuela).
How do I know if my yuca root is rotten?
Yuca can be found in the produce section of select supermarkets as well as Latin and Caribbean markets. The root is wax-coated to protect the outer skin as it travels. Choose ones that are firm with no blemishes or soft places. When cut open, the roots should have a clean fresh smell and a pristine white core. Breaking off the end of the yuca is the best way to see if the root is still good. It should be discarded if the flesh contains black flecks, lines, or any other discoloration. Soft brown patches and a foul odor characterize rotten or decomposing yuca. You can also get frozen yuca that has been peeled and chopped.
How long does it take for yucca to go bad?
Store unpeeled for up to a week in a cold, dark, and dry location. Peeled yucca root can be kept in the refrigerator for a month if the water is changed every two days, or it can be packed carefully and frozen for several months.
Can you eat cassava with black lines?
Cassava roots with firm, tough, and waxy skin should be purchased. The flesh on the inside should be white. Roots with cracks, mildew, soft patches, or a rotten odor should be avoided. Black flecks, lines, or discolouration will appear on the flesh. If you buy cassava that has some black streaks hidden within the flesh, take them out and use what’s left. To compensate, buy an extra root or break off a small portion of the tip at the store and check for white skin. This may come across as rude, but you have every right to insist on high-quality cassava. Tell an employee if it’s rotten, and they’ll dispose of it.
Should yucca be soft?
1. Using a sharp knife, cut off both ends of the yucca root.
2. Carefully slice the yucca root down the length using a sharp knife. Cut through the brown peel as well as the thick white coating.
3. Work your thumbs under one side of the cut, starting at the thicker end of the root (assuming one side is thicker). Make sure to go beneath the first white layer as well, as this will aid in the peeling of the skin in huge chunks. Once you’re under the peel, use your thumbs to work your way down the length of the root, peeling the skin away like a jacket.
4. Chop the root into bits once it has been peeled.
5. Fill a medium saucepan halfway with water and bring to a boil. Put the peeled yucca root chunks in a pot of boiling water and cook for 15 to 25 minutes, or until the root is extremely mushy when pricked with a fork. When the root is cooked, it turns from white to yellow.
6. Remove the hard spine from each yuca chunk by cutting it in half lengthwise.
You can now use the yuca in any way you like! Personally, I prefer sea salt, butter, and sautéed garlic! Perhaps a sprinkling of cheese.
Every now and then, at the grocery store, I come across a yuca that has outstayed its welcome. Because the root is concealed beneath such thick covering, it might be difficult to tell if it is fresh or not. Here’s how to figure it out:
What does yucca root rot look like?
A yucca plant suffering from root rot will have a fragile trunk, wilted, blackened leaves that break off, and drooping branches. Surprisingly, a yucca with root rot caused by overwatering appears to be dying from a lack of water.
By removing your yucca from its pot, you may see if it has root rot.
Yucca roots should have a pale color to them. Any roots that are dark in color or appear mushy are rotting and must be removed. You won’t be able to rescue the plant if the majority of the roots have decayed.
However, a yucca with most of its roots intact may be salvaged. You’ll need to remove any rotted sections. To avoid the spread of root rot, sanitize your trimmers after each cut. This can be done with a ten percent bleach solution. Begin at the roots, cutting just above any damaged parts.
Discard the decaying yucca pieces as you work, making sure to keep them away from the plant’s healthy parts. Cut away any rotting pieces of the trunk and discard any leaves that show symptoms of degeneration or rot once the roots have been pruned.
Use a new pot or disinfect the pot when it’s time to transplant your yucca. Choose a pot that is appropriate for your yucca’s size. Your yucca will end up standing in moist soil if you choose an enormous pot. Allow the yucca to sit for a few days after repotting before watering it again.
Why does my yucca smell?
If the yucca is left unwatered for too long, the leaves will shrivel and wrinkle. When yucca begins to wilt, water it right away; else, the withering will persist and the yucca will perish. Watering yuccas that have been under-watered will cause them to perk up quickly.
Overwatering Problems
Overwatering encourages the spread of disease and root rot. Necrosis, which is caused by illness and usually happens as a result of overwatering, is evident by discolored and dead leaves. For long periods of time, the yucca cannot tolerate damp soil. Root rot causes the roots to rot away, emitting a foul stench. The yucca’s leaves will eventually show signs of root rot. If left untreated, root rot will kill almost any plant. Mulch, perlite, and/or any other material that aids drainage should be added to damp soil.
Why do yucca leaves go brown?
Yuccas prefer a moderate level of humidity and will struggle to survive in dry environments. The leaves will dry out a little if there is a constant lack of humidity, which will show up as brown leaf tips. This is more likely to occur during the winter, when central heating and a lack of ventilation result in extremely dry air.
If the browning is limited to the leaf tips, you should have noticed the problem sooner. The dry air may generate larger brown patches across the leaves over time. It’s also simple to check the humidity level; all you need is a handy small humidity monitor and you’ll be up and running in no time!

Misting the leaves
Misting the leaves with a spray bottle a few of times a week is one of the simplest ways to enhance the humidity for your Yucca. We always recommend doing this in the middle of the morning so that the water has time to evaporate. Leaf rot can occur if the leaves are damp overnight while the weather is cooler. These are our favorite spray bottles, and they’re also really attractive.
Pebble tray
Over a tray of tiny pebbles, place your Yucca. Fill the tray with enough water to cover half of the pebbles. This prevents your plant from languishing in water and rotting its roots. The water in the tray will gradually evaporate, increasing the humidity.
Give your Yucca a shower
You can always give your plant a brief shower to immediately boost the humidity and wash away any long-standing dust. Simply place them in the shower and wash them down with lukewarm water to remove the leaves and thoroughly soak the soil. Because Yuccas are pretty durable and you shouldn’t cause too much damage to the leaves, you don’t need to worry about keeping the water pressure low.
Are yucca poisonous?

At least 28 people have died as a result of mistakenly mistaking bitter cassava for sweet cassava.
Cassava, commonly known as manioc or yuca, is a staple food for over 700 million people around the world. The perennial plant is native to South America, but explorers in the 17th century transported it to Africa, where it was eventually transferred to Asia. Tropical climates are ideal for it. The plant is extremely hardy, surviving where many other crops have failed, and requires less human effort per calorie than potatoes. Poorer communities are more likely to rely on cassava for survival.
A cassava plant’s leaves and tubers can be used in a broad variety of dishes. The tubers are similar to potatoes and can be boiled, fried, or mashed in the same way. When McDonald’s shops in Venezuela ran out of potatoes in 2015, they served cassava fries instead. The tubers can also be processed into flour, which can be used in baked goods like as cakes and bread. Cassava is most often recognized in the West as tapioca.
However, this adaptable and hardy crop has one big drawback: raw, uncooked cassava contains cyanide.
Cyanogenic glycosides are found in all parts of the cassava plant, which help it protect itself against pests. The bitter taste of the cyanogenic glycosides is usually enough to turn off casual grazers after the first mouthful. However, the plant has a back-up strategy for dealing with more determined herbivores. Enzymes in the plant can quickly break down the cyanogenic glycosides, releasing fatal hydrogen cyanide. When the tissue is harmed, such as by a bite, the enzymes and glycosides are separated within the plant cells, but when the tissue is broken, the two mix and swiftly release the dangerous substance. If cyanogenic glycosides are consumed, enzymes in the human gut can release hydrogen cyanide.
The essential process of respiration within cells is disrupted by hydrogen cyanide. Without energy, cells die quickly and in large numbers, resulting in death. Vomiting, nausea, headaches, and convulsions are some of the symptoms. Treatment is available, but it must begin as soon as possible to avoid irreversible damage.
It may seem incredible that such a potentially fatal plant has become the tropics’ third most significant crop. However, insect resistance is a benefit when cultivating the crop, and human ingenuity means that the tubers may be treated to reduce the poisonous content to acceptable levels. The amount of cyanogenic glycosides in the tubers varies greatly depending on the plant variety (from 50mg of cyanide equivalent per kilogram to 500mg), and the bitterness of the tuber is a good indicator. It is the sweet variety that are commonly consumed, and these are the ones that may be found in Venezuelan markets.
Bitter cultivars can look very similar to sweet kinds, but they require special processing to make the flour safe to eat. The hydrogen cyanide is released and safely evaporated by peeling, grating, or grinding the tubers and then soaking them in water. The amount of time needed to soak cassava depends on the temperature in your area and the type of cassava you’re using. Preparing bitter cassava in the way of a sweet variety, as seen in Venezuela, can result in death.
Humans have some inherent defenses against cyanide poisoning. Within the body’s cells, rhodanese enzymes add a sulfur atom to the cyanide unit, transforming it from the highly lethal cyanide (CN) to the far less toxic thiocyanate ion (SCN). Normally, a human might consume 30-35mg of hydrogen cyanide from cassava with no negative consequences; however, if they are ill or if the cyanide influx is sudden and higher than the detoxifying system can handle, issues arise.
In Venezuela, there are laws forbidding the sale of bitter cassava roots for human use. As desperation grows and black markets expand, the likelihood of it being sold and eaten in error for the sweet version rises. Over the next year, Venezuela’s struggling economy and food shortages are unlikely to improve. Cassava poisoning was last reported as a cause of death in February 2017. Let’s hope this is the last of them.
