Are Air Plants Bromeliads

What exactly is a bromeliad? And why are we discussing bromeliads on a website dedicated to tillandsias? Bromeliads, or tropical plants, are members of the Bromeliaceae family, of which Tillandsia plants (also known as air plants) are a genus. Plants in the plant kingdom are classified into several families, orders, and genuses, as we all learned in school (albeit a very long time ago!).

So, if we look at how you would categorize a Tillandsia caput medusae air plant, it is as follows:

Why do bromeliads go by the name Airplants?

Tillandsia cling to other surfaces as they grow. A few can be grown in the ground or in pots, but most do best when mounted on something else. Other genera of plants typically have roots that absorb water and nutrients from the earth. The main function of a Tillandsia’s roots is to provide support. The name “air plants” comes from the fact that the roots adhere to the host plant or mount and receive moisture and nutrients from the air rather than from the soil. Their leaves include tiny protrusions that serve as moisture and nutrient collectors. Trichomes are the name given to these objects. The plant consumes water from dew and rain in its natural habitat. Only humidity will not keep them alive.

Tillandsia only has one flower, like the majority of bromeliads. Before they flower, portions of the leaves, known as bracts, may change to a vivid shade like pink or red. A bromeliad flower will often last for a long time, however the plant will eventually die once the flower has faded. Pups are the plant’s young, which it produces before it dies. These young plants can be taken from their mother and cultivated separately.

Why is it known as a “air plant”?

As they solely use their root systems for attachment, air plants rely on other plants or buildings for support. They do not harm the supporting plant and are not parasites. They only attach to the support structure using their root systems. Because they obtain all of their nutrients and moisture from the environment, air plants are known by their common name. The thin, rigid leaves include tiny scales that help the plant absorb water and nutrients.

Late winter and mid-summer are when little flowers, often less than two inches across, form. The mature plant will eventually die once it has flowered, but young plants, known as “pups,” will grow from the parent plant’s base.

How is a Bromeliad air plant cared for?

These tiny, grey-leaved plants can be found at your local garden center, often growing on coral, driftwood, shells, etc.

The long, narrow leaves have hairy scales covering them; it is these microscopic plates that allow the foliage to absorb moisture from the air and nutrients from the dust that settles on it. Water and compost are not required, however summertime misting of the air plants is beneficial.

All of the plants are Tillandsia species. A winter temperature of at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit should be provided, and keep them in strong light away from direct sunlight (10 degrees C). When they are fully grown, colorful flowering spikes develop, and the nearby leaves may change color, but the blooms are short-lived and disappear quickly. T. bulbosa and T. tenuifolia have blue blooms in red bracts and have a base resembling a bulb. T. caput-medusae is a different kind with a bulbous base that is preferred for its large, twisted leaves. T. ionantha or T. argentea have silvery foliage if you’re looking for it. You should look for T. juncea if you want lengthy, rush-like leaves.

Do air plants hibernate at all?

Do you want to buy air plants but have been putting it off because you don’t know how to take care of them? Or perhaps you’ve had air plants before that didn’t thrive for whatever reason. In general, air plants may require less upkeep than other indoor plants, but they still need care and attention. Judy, our resident expert on indoor plants, provided advice on how to take care of air plants (Tillandsia).

Tillandsia is the perfect plant for someone who dislikes getting their hands dirty. This sleek-looking plant doesn’t need soil to survive, and (added bonus) it doesn’t need much care either. The majority of the time, if you place them in the appropriate location, they will do their own thing and simply sit there and be adorable. In terms of placement options, they are likewise incredibly adaptable. They DO need SOME care, so continue reading if all of this makes sense to you.

Placement

Tillandsia may be planted almost anyplace. One common option for Tillandsia is in a beautiful glass globe, such as the one you can see above (and won’t you feel fancy?!). Other choices include in/on.

  • an ornamental dish (filled with sand or not)
  • ceramic or porcelain
  • a seashell
  • driftwood

To fasten an air plant to something, you can also use twist ties, wire, waterproof adhesive (like Liquid Nails), or staples (but be careful not to staple fleshy sections). Remember that fastening your Tillandsia to something might alter how you water it. As long as there is sufficient light, whatever location you discover that you believe will work would probably be OK. This leads us to lighting.

Lighting

Tillandsia should be placed in a bright area, but not in the sun. More light can be tolerated if there is high humidity in the room or area. If you’d like, you can place the Tillandsia outside on your deck, patio, or porch (but again, not in direct sun). Some plants can thrive in low to moderate light, but if you see that one is struggling, you might want to shift it to an area with more light. Keep in mind that if your Tillandsia is in a glass globe, the glass will enhance the heat and light, which could cause it to dry up more quickly. This leads us to watering.

Watering

When watering your Tillandsia, the type of water you use is crucial. You must use water that is nutrient- and mineral-rich since tillandsia obtain their nutrition from water rather than soil. Although rainwater is a great option, you should utilize non-chlorinated water if you don’t have access to rainwater (well water or spring water). You shouldn’t utilize water that has been treated or distilled by your town or city.

As a general rule, water your Tillandsia in the summer by immersing it in water for around 20 minutes every 7 to 10 days. Put the entire plant under water and give it a good bath. To dry the Tillandsia after soaking, set it on paper towels or a towel and let it air dry fully before putting it back in the container you usually keep it in. Normally, this will take two to three hours. If your Tillandsia is in an area that is particularly humid, you can typically get away with misting it rather than immersing it in water. However, you’ll still need to remove it from its packaging so that you can dry it. (In the photo below, Judy also had a fan blowing on these.)

Tillandsia does “become dormant in the winter, so it will not require as much water,” like other indoor plants do. Giving Tillandsia a nice misting every two weeks should be plenty. Remember to wait until it is totally dry before putting it in a container. (Speaking of winter, Tillandsia looks stunning on a Christmas tree in a glass ornament! Fertilizing

Like any other plant, Tillandsia will flourish if you can fertilize it occasionally. You can use the fertilizer we have on hand (seen above), but you can also use bromeliad (17-8-22) or orchid fertilizer. As you would if you were watering it, combine the fertilizer and water (follow the preparation instructions on the fertilizer). Once more, let it air dry. You should fertilize your garden twice a month. (TIP: You can water and fertilize your Tillandsia at the same time if you have a fish tank or pond; further fertilizer is not necessary.)

What is a relation between air plants?

Members of the Bromeliad family’s Tillandsia genus are known as “air plants” in common parlance. The pineapple is most likely the Bromeliad family member that is most well-known for air plants. Air plants, however, obtain their water and nutrients from the air, unlike pineapples. It’s the 1990s, soil.

What makes air plants unique?

1. Epiphytes and occasionally lithophytes both describe air plants. A plant that grows on another plant, such as the limb or bark of a tree, but is not a parasite, is called an epiphyte. Instead of utilizing their roots to absorb nutrients, they employ them to anchor themselves. The air, rain, and dew provide them with the nourishment they need. A plant that grows on, around, or amidst rocks, sand, or other hard surfaces is called a lithophyte. There are several “xeric types of lithophytes that use their trichomes to capture moisture from the atmosphere include air plants.

2. Tillandsia (air plants) are closely related to pineapples because they belong to the Bromeliad family.

3. Trichomes are used by air plants to capture moisture and nutrients from the atmosphere. Trichomes seem like tiny cups that open and reopen to absorb and hold moisture up close. Some air plants may catch your eye because they are “fuzzier than others, and trichomes are the reason for this. Due to climatic factors and dry regions, these fuzzy plants have evolved to have more trichomes. In our blog post “Xeric Vs. 4. The utilization of CAM photosynthesis by air plants to exchange gases and “Unlike most plants, which do their breathing during the day, nocturnal plants employ sunlight for photosynthesis. We have a detailed blog entry regarding CAM photosynthesis if you’d want to read more about it.

5. Tillandsia plants can be found in a variety of climatic conditions and landscapes, including hot, humid rainforests, high cloud forests, deserts, and mountain slopes. They have developed adaptations to survive in these often harsh conditions since they are present in such a variety of temperatures.

6. It’s interesting to note that most air plants don’t produce fragrant blossoms. The citrus blooms of T. diaguitensis and the nutmeg aroma generated by Tillandsia cyanea are two examples of plants that have fragrant flowers and produce some of the most subtle scents.

There is truth to the rumor that T. duratii blooms smell like grape soda.

7. After blooming, air plants produce offsets (pups). After giving birth, the mother plant frequently dies, and the pups can be cut off when they are 1/3 the size of the mother plant. 8. A few air plants, including T. caput medusae, T. seleriana, T. pseudobaileyi, T. butzii, and T. streptophylla, have pseudobulbs. A distinct bulbous base that assumes the shape of a bulb is what is known as a pseudobulb. They are referred to as pseudobulbs since the majority of them have empty chambers inside of which ant colonies naturally grow.

9. A lot of hybrid air plants exist. There are actually some hybrids that grow naturally, albeit the bulk were created via the efforts of botanists and horticulturists. A naturally occurring cross between T. schiedeana and T. ionantha is the T. rectifolia. This is regarded as a “It is an introgressive species because it is a natural hybrid that has multiplied to the point that it is now regarded as a separate species.

10. The T. xerographica, one of the most well-liked air plants, was nearly exterminated by poaching in the 1980s. Since that time, exporters and farmers of these plants have been required to abide by stringent laws.

How old are air plants on average?

These hybrids were developed by mating various species, and occasionally genera, in order to breed out many of the difficult care requirements of pure orchid species while introducing desired traits including color, aroma, blossom size, and ease of care.
