Pothos, also known as devil’s ivy, golden pothos, or hunter’s rove, is one of North America’s most popular home plants. Epipremnum pinnatum cv. ‘Aureum’ or Epipremnum aureum are the scientific names. However, because E. pinnatum and ‘Aureum’ differ in a number of features, the latter may be more accurate. Pothos aureus, Rahphidophora aurea, R. pinnata, and Scindapsus aureus have all been used to classify it in the past. The slender twining and branching stem of this evergreen root-climber can grow up to 65 feet long. Because only the juvenile phase is grown as a houseplant and flowering happens only in the mature phase, pothos does not flower under cultivation. These plants produce a cluster of upright flower stalks in the wild, each with a cream spathe surrounded by purple around the spadix.

Pothos comes in a variety of sizes, from little starting plants to giant hanging baskets, and may be found in many retail outlets. They’re also available growing on wood or foam poles in various container sizes.

Pothos is a great choice for beginners because it is so easy to grow. It thrives in filtered light, high humidity, and temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but it can withstand a wide range of circumstances. It does not, however, withstand a lot of direct sunshine. Stay away from drafts. A well-aerated growth medium is required. Plants should be allowed to dry slightly before watering, and only when the soil surface feels dry should they be watered. Fertilize every other month, unless the plant is not actively developing in the winter. Older leaves will turn yellow and fall off naturally, leaving the majority of the leaves at the vine’s end. Prune vines selectively to keep them at a manageable length and encourage new growth. If required, trim plants back to 2 inches from the soil line.

Cuttings or air-layering are both easy ways to grow this plant. In 3-4 weeks, the vines will root in water or vermiculite, and buds will begin to form in 1-2 weeks in warm temps. Planting numerous rooted cuttings in a single container is the best option.

Pothos has little pest concerns in general, but it is occasionally afflicted by insects or illnesses. Overwatering is a typical cause of root rots, which manifest as brown or nonexistent roots. Overwatering, insufficient watering, or too much fertilizer can cause blackening of the leaf margins or tips (because of buildup of salts in the soil). The discoloration is frequently followed by the yellowing of the leaves. Mealybugs and scales are the most prevalent insect pests that infest pothos in homes. Mealybugs appear as white, cottony masses in leaf axils, lower leaf surfaces, and even roots. Scales resemble bark-colored lumps on stems and leaves, and they can be difficult to identify from the plant material they feed on. Because these pests (many, but not all) create vast amounts of honeydew, the leaves and adjacent surfaces may become sticky, and sooty mold may grow. Plants that have been infested become stunted, and in severe infestations, plant portions start to die. To control these insects, pesticides may be used, although it is frequently preferable to remove the plant and start again with fresh plants or cuttings. Spider mites infest pothos on occasion, but they’re easy to get rid of with careful washing and periodic applications of insecticidal soap.

Low light can cause variegation to fade. Low temperatures, or abrupt temperature changes from very high to moderate temperatures, can generate scattered brown patches in the center of the leaf, especially if the plants are succulent and growing rapidly.

Pothos contains calcium oxalate, which makes it poisonous if consumed in high amounts. This will give a burning sensation in the mouth, and the sap may irritate the skin.

How do I get my pothos to flower?

This versatility would come in handy on its round-the-world trip. It has been labeled an invasive in the subtropics—Hawaii and Florida, to name two—in addition to practically starting an industry and being a favorite for aquariums and lizard habitats. It has also engulfed entire forests in Sri Lanka and other tropical locations.

However, one thing the Epipremnum aureum gave up along the road was its reliance on seed propagation. The flowers, like those of other aroids, are small and produced in clusters on the columnar spadix, which is protected by a modified, often colorful leaf called a spathe, which can be up to 9″ long. All the climbing aroids of Southeast Asia were listed as “potho” by the early French botanist Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu in his great work, Genera Plantarum, published in 1789. Linden and Andre named the shrub Pothos aureum in 1880. It was given its current genus, Epipremnum mooreense, by a French doctor and botanist in 1899, but it took another 65 years for the rest of the globe to catch up with him.

Adolf Engler, a renowned botanist, classified our favorite small rainforest weed into the Scindapsus genus in 1908. He was able to study certain flowers in botanical collections in Germany, and for many years, everyone was satisfied with such classification. Finally, in 1962, the pothos in both Puerto Rico and Miami’s botanical gardens bloomed. Monroe Birdsey, a well-known botanist and Araceae expert, was able to study the inflorescence under a microscope and determine that they were not Scindapsus at all. He initially classified them as Rhaphidophora, but later decided that they belonged to the Epipremnum. In the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, George Bunting codified that categorization in 1964.

Of fact, botanists in other parts of the world appear to employ different classification systems, so you’ll see a variety of names. Because the plants of the Pothos genus (which includes roughly 65 species) do not resemble our friendly neighborhood “pothos,” the term has been largely abandoned by experts in the field. The term “pothos” is still used in the landscape and houseplant industries. So there you have it.

Everyone agrees that the plant belongs to the Araceae family, which includes aroids. It’s also a member of the Monstereae family, which includes three genera: Rhaphidopora (100 species), Monstera (50 species native to the Neotropics), and Epipremnum (100 species) (15 species).

The current controversy among botanists about pothos is whether aureum is a separate species or a variant of E. pinnatum. However, there are clear distinctions between pinnatum and aureum in adult leaves, therefore I’m inclined to go with the separate species camp. When it comes to the botanical name, however, references to E. aureum and E. pinnatum appear to be evenly split. Last but not least, a’silver satin’ pothos isn’t actually a pothos. It’s a Scindapsus pictus, to be precise.
