Those who enjoy Dieffenbachia flowers may be disappointed to realize that there are just a few reliable methods for getting these plants to bloom. Their blossoming is uncommon and unpredictably unpredictable. People who have been growing Dumb Canes for decades will post images of a single developing inflorescence on houseplant forums.
If you want to see a Dieffenbachia bloom, you should buy an older plant rather than a young clone. These plants usually don’t flower until they’ve been around for a few years.
In most aroids, sunlight is also required for flowering. Although your Dieffenbachia can thrive in low light, it will not grow an inflorescence unless it is exposed to plenty of bright, indirect light. Consider placing your Dumb Cane in an east-facing window or a south-facing window with a sheer curtain (these plants cannot tolerate direct sunlight). Our article on Dieffenbachia lighting will offer you a more in-depth look at their energy requirements.
Spraying a Dumb Cane with the plant growth hormone gibberellic acid is the most effective technique to encourage flowering. A single spray with a solution of 250-1000 parts per million should suffice, however inflorescences normally take a few months to appear.
Do Dumb canes bloom?
Additionally, as the plant grows older and taller, bare stems or canes may appear at the plant’s base. One (or more) of these canes can be cut out at soil level and then sliced into 5cm / 2inch long “chunks.” Push each “chuck” about halfway into a free-draining compost mix (i.e. if it’s 5cm long, push it in 2.5cm), moisten thoroughly, and keep warm.
New growth should emerge near the top of the bare cane after a few weeks (as in the picture above). If the cane you cut off has a crown of leaves at the top, you can plant it in a similar compost mix to reuse it.
Speed of Growth
You can expect moderate to fast growth if you provide mild temperatures, excellent light, feed, and frequent watering. If you don’t give any of those items on a consistent basis, your progress will be slowed or even halted.
Height / Spread
Dumb Canes’ eventual height will be determined by the size of their pots. If you give it a large container, it could grow to 1.5m / 5ft in a matter of years. Pots of average size result in a size of 0.6m / 2ft, which is more manageable.
Flowers
The Dumb Cane does flower indoors every now and then, but they can never compare to the beauty and majesty of the leaf, so don’t be concerned if yours isn’t blooming.
How do you pollinate Dieffenbachia?
Pollen from one inflorescence with ripe males must be physically transferred to another inflorescence with receptive females in order to cross-pollinate Aglaonema and Dieffenbachia (Figure 7). Pollen is not dispersed by the wind. Sweeping pollen into a container with a small, soft brush is the first step. The same brush that was used to collect pollen can also be used to apply pollen to the female. To begin, gently wipe the brush on the female stigmatic surfaces to make it sticky. Then insert the sticky brush into the pollen supply and delicately brush pollen grains onto receptive flowers’ stigmatic surfaces.
How tall will a dieffenbachia grow?
Height/Spread Most dieffenbachias will reach a height of 3 to 6 feet and a width of 1 to 3 feet. Individual leaves can measure up to 18 inches in length and 12 inches in width.
Does dieffenbachia like coffee grounds?
Coffee grounds are a good source of nitrogen, benefit plants that favor an acidic growing medium, and foster the growth of helpful bacteria in the soil. It can be used to the following uses:
- Use the leftover coffee to water the plants after you’ve brewed it in a pot. For plants like impatiens, orchids, dieffenbachia, and African violets, using one cup per week is a smart approach to help them develop well.
- Coffee grounds can also be used as a natural fertilizer. For optimal results, combine 1 part coffee ground with 3 parts garden soil or potting mix.
- It’s also a good idea to put coffee grinds in your compost bin. Aside from that, you can always utilize old coffee grounds to side-dress your plants.
How often should you water a dieffenbachia?
The next item on our Dumb Cane plant care checklist is to keep the top inch of soil damp but not soggy. Your Dumb Cane plant can survive a few missed waterings, but prolonged watering neglect will cause its leaves to wilt.
The leaves of your Dumb Cane plant are going brown, and the stem is discolored and squishy, indicating that you have overwatered it.
Solution: Depending on the size of your Dumb Cane plant, we recommend watering it once or twice a week to avoid this problem.
Why are dieffenbachia leaves turning yellow?
Underwatering or overwatering your plant might cause the leaves to change color. Because dieffenbachia is a potted plant, it’s critical to give it the water it need because it won’t obtain it from rain, in-ground soil, or other sources.
If the leaves have turned brown, examine the soil in the pot to see if it is wet or dry:
- Reduce the amount of times you water your plant if the soil is damp, as too much water can cause the roots to drown and the leaves to yellow.
- If the soil is dry, start watering it more frequently, otherwise your plant will die, with yellowing and browning leaves.
Dieffenbachia is one of the most popular houseplants due to its lengthy life expectancy. However, it, like all living things, will eventually begin to age. The green leaves turn yellow…this is a perfectly normal process. When the time comes, the leaves will naturally fall off. Trim the stems and chop back foliage after all the leaves have fallen off to encourage fresh growth.
The weather is another major cause of your stupid cane houseplant becoming yellow. Houseplants prefer a warm environment, and if the temperature drops too low, the plant’s leaves will be harmed. If you’re going to put your houseplant on a window sill or near an air conditioner during the winter, make sure it gets plenty of light but isn’t too cold or drafty.
Even if exposed to brilliant indirect light, a houseplant does not receive the same amount of sun as plants in your garden during the day. A plant leaf can become yellow and droop if it is exposed to too much sunlight. All of the leaves will turn yellow before you know it.
If your plant is in the middle of the room, away from a light source, it’s ideal to relocate it to the window sill during the day, where it will receive direct sunshine. Whether it’s already on the window sill, see if there’s anything blocking the light. You can provide additional artificial light over the winter to ensure that your plant leaves do not change color.
An infection might also cause yellow areas on the leaves. Infection causes yellowing of the leaves, as well as discoloration of the blooms and deformation of the stem. If the illness has spread throughout the plant, it’s better to relocate it away from neighboring plants or replace it totally. Before using the tools on other plants, make careful to trim the leaves that have turned yellow and sanitize the instruments.
This one can be a little more difficult to break because you might not even notice what’s going on. Your stupid cane plant’s color may be changing due to a lack of nutrients, particularly nitrogen. To keep your plants’ leaves from yellowing, fertilize them with a diluted houseplant fertilizer on a regular basis.
Should I mist dieffenbachia?
Dieffenbachia thrive in humid environments, and more is usually better. The goal should be to maintain a humidity level of 60% all year. Misting the plant’s leaves will assist for a while, but it won’t maintain the humidity levels up.
Where do you put dieffenbachia?
Dieffenbachia thrives in bright, indirect light and is best grown indoors. Plant it in a peat-rich potting soil that is fertile and well-drained. It thrives in high humidity because it is a tropical plant. Placing the pot on a tray of wet pebbles is one way to accomplish this.
