Do Deer Eat Yucca Plants?

Turk’s hat and shrimp plant are two shade-loving hummingbird plants. Except during droughts, deer usually leave them alone.

Some of the tall semi-tropical bloomers, such as esperanza and thyrallis, fall into this category of root-hardy blooming shrubs. Deer will avoid poinciana and firebush in some communities. Even if deer ate them during a drought, they would most likely survive in the long run.

Annuals: Vinca is the most deer-resistant of the annual flowers. Zinnias and snapdragons are often overlooked by deer.

It’s a cousin of our native rock rose from South America (Pavonia lasiopetala). Both have flowers that open in the morning and close in the afternoon and reseed easily. In the dappled shade of live oaks, hastata’s pale blossoms shine. They’re much more attractive with a wine-colored eye and veins.

The deer have not tried the cleome ‘Senorita Rosalita’ on the sunny side of the bed.

The Joshua Tree got its name from Mormon pioneers who felt the plant looked like the Biblical prophet with his arms uplifted, inviting them across the desert wasteland to the promised land. It can live for generations.

The yuccas provide not only a grocery store for insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals, but also habitat, tools, and raw materials for the consumers, providing an important niche in the desert food chain.

In fact, nearly every element of certain yucca species, from the leaves to the stems to the roots to the flowers and fruits, ends up on the shopping list of some customer, often including man.

All the pueblos used the same method of preparation, which involved splitting the fruit in half, extracting the seeds, and drying the halves. Peeling the fruit and drying the pulp, which was then formed into a cake and dried further, was a much more usual process. The Jemez drank the delicious liquid after boiling the cake pieces in water.”

According to Bell and Castetter, banana Yucca “was abundant in the mountainous terrain occupied by the nomadic Yavapaiand was one of the wild crops to be harvested in its season…”

“The Northeastern Yavapai ate the fruit after boiling it in water, as well as gathering the fragile flower stalks before they blossomed and cooking them in the fire…”

During the spring, when “the clusters of white flowers…are in blossom,” a narrowleaf yucca helped refill the Chiricahua Apaches’ larders, according to Morris Edward Opler in his An Apache Life-way.

“They’re collected and boiled with meat or bones.”

Any leftovers are boiled, dried, and saved.

Another kind of yucca (unidentified) has its buds opened and dried.

They must be impaled on sticks as you would dry peaches during the procedure; you cannot put them on a hide since they would stick to it…

Deodorant soap bars are the most common deterrents. Simply punch a hole in numerous bars of soap and use twine to hang the soap bars from the trees and fencing surrounding your garden. Deer will avoid your fields if they smell the soap.

Many other deer deterrents rely on odor as well, and their overall success is dependent on how long the grazers take to adjust to the new odours.
