The main factor behind the browning of any hydrangea, including those in pots, is the same.
However, a few traits unique to hydrangeas grown in pots can raise the possibility of dark leaves and flowers.
The most common reason that potted hydrangea leaves become brown is that they are grown in pots that are too tiny and dry out too rapidly. The roots of hydrangea are thick, and they have a high requirement for soil moisture. The leaves will wilt, curl, and turn brown as an indication of stress if the soil dries out.
The capacity of the pot for potting soil, which holds moisture, is reduced if the container is too tiny.
When I notice a hydrangea in a container with brown leaves, I always check the roots because they are frequently confined by the pot and have less access to moisture.
As containers can dry out very rapidly on hot days and result in a dead hydrangea, it should be remembered that pots also require watering significantly more frequently than hydrangea planted in the garden.
- The hydrangea should be repotted in a pot with a minimum 12 inch diameter and the same proportionate depth. This sized container guarantees that the hydrangeas have adequate soil for the roots to get the nutrients and moisture they need. It is worth checking to see if the roots are pot-bound as the hydrangea ages, though, as the root system can be rather vast. If so, plant the hydrangea in an even bigger pot.
- Adding leaf mould to the potting soil will help. Leaf mould can assist in ensuring that your potted hydrangea has the ideal balance of moisture because it has an amazing capacity to hold moisture (even more so than compost).
- As often as necessary, give your hydrangea a good soak to keep the soil constantly moist. In order to ensure that the soil is evenly saturated and that the water has reached the roots where it is needed, water the hydrangea thoroughly, letting any extra water trickle out of the drainage holes in the base of the pot.
- In order to keep the leaves from turning brown during the hottest parts of the year, it can be necessary to water potted hydrangeas every day. Because of their huge, abundant leaves, hydrangeas have a high moisture requirement. In order to achieve the best moist soil conditions, watering hydrangeas once or twice per week in the spring and summer is typically the correct quantity.
The hydrangea should have enough resources with a larger container and more frequent watering to ensure that the leaves maintain a healthy green rather than turning brown.
Make sure the container is in a wind-free, sheltered location with dappled light or morning sun followed by afternoon shade.
You may always prune back any brown leaves or blossoms, or you can wait for the hydrangea to naturally shed them.
How is hydrangea leaf curl handled?
There are a few causes for the curling of hydrangea leaves.
Consider which of these threats is most likely to affect your plant, but since fungus isn’t one of them, you can cease using any fungicides. 1. The most frequent cause is a sucking insect feeding under the leaves when the foliage is young, like aphids or lacebugs. Early on in the leaf’s existence, this causes damage to the cells, resulting in deformed leaves as they unfold. If you notice little insects on the underside of leaves, spray insecticidal soap underneath the vegetation. Herbicide harm is 2. What you’re witnessing may be caused by the application of a herbicide, such as weed killer, around the plant or on the lawn surrounding the plant. Don’t use weed killers on lawns and gardens. Both broad-leaf weed killers and pre-emergent chemicals fall under this category. To remove them from the soil around hydrangeas, deeply water the area. 3. A virus is possible but unlikely. Usually, in addition to the curling, a virus will cause the foliage to yellow. Viruses have no known treatment, but as we have shown, they are the least likely source.
What causes the browning and curling of hydrangea leaves?
Brown spots on leaves in a home landscape are typically brought on by a fungus or bacteria. Most of the time, the fungus or bacteria does not endanger the plant’s existence, but the blotches can be unsightly. These patches typically appear once a year in the late summer or early fall. The spots from the previous year do not interfere with the plant’s ability to blossom the next spring when the leaves reappear unharmed.
Fungal Leaf Spots on Hydrangea Leaves
Cercospora leaf spot and anthracnose are two different fungal diseases that can affect hydrangeas. 1a. Cercospora Leaf Spot, also called Cercospora Hydrangea, is characterised by spots at the base of the plant that are often brown or purple in colour. The dots are tiny, with an average dimension of 1/8 to 1/4 inches. On the hydrangea macrophylla, spots can have tan or grey centres and border halos that are brown or purple. The leaf may get discoloured and then fall off if it is diseased. Additionally, sometimes the entire hydrangea leaf can turn purple.
1b. The fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is responsible for anthracnose. Large brown spots with centres that are lighter brown or tan result from this. The spots may also show up on the blossoms, which is a clue that the spots are anthracnose, a form of leaf spot.
What causes hydrangea leaves to curl?
It is important to understand the causes now that we have described the various varieties of leaf-curls. We only briefly discussed some of the factors in the last part; here, we’ll go into more detail about what actually occurs.
Typically, the following elements lead to leaf curling in hydrangea plants:
1) Too much irrigation
Hydrangea plants that have been overwatered exhibit symptoms that are almost identical to those of a plant that has been underwatered. Curly leaves are the primary symptom. In essence, hydrangea leaves typically curl downward as a result of overwatering.
When the soil is overwatered, the roots are deprived of the oxygen they require to produce the energy necessary to transmit water and mineral salts to the leaves for photosynthesis. Therefore, injured roots are unable to take in and transfer additional water to the plant’s upper sections. Because of this, hydrangea plants’ leaves curl downward.
2) A lack of water supplies
The leaves of the hydrangea plant curl upward when there is not enough water available. As they don’t have much water to exude, leaves curl upward primarily to shield themselves from sunburn exposure. The plant is then able to withstand water shortage for a little while longer as a result. They also curl to reduce the amount of water loss through transpiration.
3) Illnesses
The leaves of hydrangea plants curl as a result of diseases such root rot, powdery mildew, and leaf spots. They either bend as a defence mechanism to prevent the illness from seriously harming the plants or as a result of the damage these diseases subject them to.
The leaf surface is covered in powdery mildew, which prevents photosynthesis. The leaves will bend upward because the upper portion is mostly affected, allowing the bottom portion to carry out the creation of nutrients. Additionally, powdery mildew scavenges nutrients from the plant, which results in withered leaves that curl upward.
When a fungus congregates on a leaf’s moist surface, leaf spots develop. The spot then multiplies and spreads to other areas of the blade as a result of reproduction. The plant is also deprived of nutrients by this ailment. The hydrangea leaves begin to curl as a result.
4) Pests
The onslaught of pests on hydrangea bushes is yet another frequent reason why leaves curl. The leaves typically curve inward.
The main sucking insects that cause the leaves to curl inward are lace bugs and aphids. When a leaf is young, they often eat on the lower side of the leaf. The form of the leaves is altered as a result of the damage to their cells. The leaves consequently curve inward.
5) A delicate kind of hydrangeas
Some hydrangea cultivars are extremely sensitive to even the smallest environmental changes. For example, some species may respond by curling their leaves when they experience a brief period of cold.
6. Limited availability of some minerals
The hydrangea plant needs specific minerals to keep its leaves in good condition. Among them is the mineral phosphorus. Why is this;
Phosphorus is essential for promoting the growth of hydrangea plants. The process of photosynthesis depends on it. Insufficient phosphorus causes the plant to produce nutrients ineffectively, which causes the leaves to curl downward. It’s because the plant doesn’t have enough energy to support growth.
In addition, phosphorus aids in the growth of roots. The ability of the roots to absorb moisture and mineral salts for uptake to the leaves and food production will be compromised if they fail to grow and develop properly. It adds to the downward curling of leaves caused by a lack of water.
Why do the leaves on my hydrangea seem burnt?
Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) can be difficult to manage in terms of water. They are usually produced in cooler climates, which tends to consume less water. Additionally, they have exceptionally big leaf surface areas, which causes greater water loss. Hydrangeas also lack the ability to control water loss under drought stress circumstances because plants do not seal their stomates. This is easily capable of causing wilting and the subsequent leaf scorch (Fig. 1).
Hydrangeas frequently experience leaf scorch. This is frequently seen when a drip emitter comes loose from the plant’s pot and causes tip burn. On the middle to higher leaves, the initial light brown necrosis frequently shows symptoms. The leaf margin closest to the leaf tip is where symptoms first appear. The light brown colour may eventually turn nearly black with time (Fig. 2). In extreme cases, the leaf necrosis might extend halfway back toward the root of the leaf, which is another crucial diagnostic feature (Fig. 3). On the other hand, newly expanding leaves have also been seen to develop a minor leaf tip necrosis along the leaf margin (Fig. 4). Because the necrotic leaf margin tissue cannot extend as the internal tissue grows, these leaves appear cupped and crinkled as they mature (Fig. 5). After a week of overcast weather, which would restrict transpiration and hence the plant’s ability to absorb water, these symptoms have been most noticeable. On plants, the symptoms appear while the tiny leaves are still in their whorls and around the flower buds. Other species have also been said to exhibit same characteristics. According to a study co-authored by Dr. Bill Miller of Cornell University, the necrosis on “Stargazer” lilies is brought on by a lack of calcium (Fig.6). They discovered that compared to the leaves around the flower bud, the flower bud was a higher sink (had preferential demand) for Ca. Ca travels to the flower buds rather than these surrounding leaves. As a result, a Ca limiting situation develops, leading to the cell death of the leaves. When zinnias are grown in the summer in hot, humid circumstances, the same problems can arise. While the growth is still in the whorl, the wrapper leaves that surround the flower bud develop leaf tip necrosis (Fig. 7). At three grower locations, we noticed that the newly expanding hydrangea leaves had leaf tip burn. The tissue at the leaf’s outer margin was sampled, and the tissue’s Ca concentration was determined to be low. For pink and white hydrangeas, the ideal substrate pH ranges from 5.8 to 6.2. The pH range for blue hydrangeas is between 5.2 and 5.5. As a result, to maintain the substrate’s acidity, less lime is normally supplied. This also implies that less calcium is being given to the hydrangea plant. The majority of calcium-based fertilisers are also basic, so they are normally avoided to avoid raising the pH of the substrate. If Ca does not naturally occur in the irrigation water, the plants will receive only very little amounts of Ca, and inadequate conditions are more likely to develop. High humidity in the greenhouse during flower bud formation may increase calcium deficiency symptoms on the young, developing leaves. Under these circumstances, Ca uptake from the substrate via mass flow is constrained by a lack of plant transpiration. The decreased transpiration reduces the amount of Ca that is accessible and causes the leaves surrounding the budding flower to burn at the tips. Promoting air flow in the greenhouse will aid in preventing this environmental shortage in addition to providing appropriate Ca in the range of 50 to 100 ppm. Utilizing horizontal flow fans or performing an air exchange to release the humidity will increase air flow.
Why are the leaves on my hydrangea brown and crispy?
First, keep in mind that the majority of hydrangeas will die back in the fall, causing their leaves to wilt and fall off.
Early in the spring, you’ll notice new growth when stems that might have appeared to be dead begin to produce green foliage.
In contrast, there are probably other causes at work if your leaves are turning brown in the spring or summer.
Brown hydrangea leaves are typically an indication of dehydration and withering in the heat, though the precise causes depend on the species and their growing conditions.
They got too hot in the midday sun
Giving your hydrangea leaves considerable sun exposure is one surefire technique to make them crisp up. They’ll be OK in the spring when the temperature stays quite low.
However, exposure to the early-afternoon sun during the summer can be quite harmful.
Grow your hydrangeas in a location where they will receive sunshine in the mornings and evenings but not during the peak hours to prevent scorch damage.
They wilted too often
If hydrangeas are allowed to wilt too frequently in the heat, they will not only become burnt but also become brown.
Lack of moisture is what causes wilting, thus there are some effective methods to take to stop it from happening.
Give your hydrangeas a good glug of water every few days when the temps are climbing high, and prepare the soil to better retain moisture, to prevent repeated wilting. To help with this, sprinkle a small amount of mulch around the bases of each plant.
The leaves got wet!
Hydrangeas need to be watered frequently in hot weather, but overwatering can lead to issues.
Browning can occur when water collects on leaves and is unable to drain away adequately. Additionally, it may result in fungus and other problems that harm the plant in different ways.
To prevent damp leaves, water your hydrangea carefully, paying special attention to the soil and roots rather than the foliage.
You’ve got fungal damage…
If this is the case, the leaf will begin to develop the characteristic flaws, including brown pockmarks and an overall impression of bruising and injury.
Do not be alarmed if you discover leaf stain on your hydrangeas. Prior to the damage spreading to the entire point, it is frequently achievable to “nip the problem in the bud,” so to speak.
To prevent fungal damage: The strongest defence against fungal damage is prevention.
First, be careful to clear the area beneath your hydrangea shrub of trash and dead plants, as doing so will eliminate the fungi’s preferred breeding grounds.
Second, prune your bush’s lowest branches to provide airflow. As a result, fungus spores cannot settle.
If you are dealing with an illness and have missed the chance to avoid it, you should remove all of the plant’s dead or seriously affected leaves and destroy them to stop the virus from spreading.
Watch for leaves that have a minor infection and determine whether to employ natural remedies or fungicide chemicals to control it.
They’re in shock
Repotting hydrangea plants can be a little shocking to them, and on occasion, the shock is strong enough to turn the leaves brown.
If you dig further, you’ll discover that this problem is similarly related to moisture, and avoidance usually involves moving your plant with a little more care.
Massage the roots of your plant while moving it to a new pot, and then give it plenty of water as soon as it is in the new soil to prevent repotting stress.
This will allow your plant’s roots enough time to receive the liquid they require.
