How are essential oils extracted from flowers?
Before starting the experiment, make sure you have read through all of the directions to make sure you know exactly what will happen at each stage.
Step one: select your flowers
Almost all flowers should provide an effect, even if it is extremely slight for some. So please feel free to choose your favorite flower, try one of the ones we tried, or if you don’t like flowers, perhaps try a herb.
If your flowers don’t smell overly floral when you pick them, they might still work quite well. We tried the experiment with three different types of flowers (roses, lilies, and carnations), and discovered that the most intense and obvious smell came from the roses, which also happened to be the least pungent at the beginning of the process.
Step two: pick off the petals

Step four: leave your flower mixture for 24 hours

What’s the most effective way to get essential oils out of a plant?
The most common technique for isolating and extracting essential oils from plants for use in natural products is steam distillation. This occurs when the volatile compounds in the plant material are vaporized by the steam, leading to their eventual condensation and collecting.
Steam is added to a sizable container known as a Still, which is typically made of stainless steel and holds the plant material.
The plant material containing the desired oils is infused with steam through an input, which causes the plant’s aromatic molecules to release and transform into vapor.
The condenser or condensation flask receives the vaporized plant components. Here, two distinct pipes allow hot water to leave and cold water to enter the condenser, respectively. This causes the vapor to return to liquid form and cool.
The Separator, a container beneath the Condenser that catches the fragrant liquid by-product, is used to catch it. The essential oil floats on top of the water since water and oil do not mix. It is siphoned off from here. (Some essential oils, like clove essential oil, are heavier than water and are located near the bottom of the Separator.)

Harvest Plant Material

Dry the Plan Material

Heat The Boiler
Once the boiler reaches boiling temperature, increase the heat as needed. Turn on the water for the condenser as the still is heating up. At 150 degrees Fahrenheit, it is advised to switch on the condensing water. The essential oils should start to enter your collection jar through the drip-arm once the water is boiling and the condensing water is flowing. The distillation procedure is largely hands-off, but you will need to watch out that your still doesn’t run dry of water because this will harm the distillation machinery.
Collect and Separate Oil and Hydrosol
The distillate needs to be put into a separatory funnel with a stopcock at the bottom. Allow the hydrosol and oil mixture to sit for at least 12 hours once the distillation is finished, then pour the hydrosol into one container and the oil into another.
Store the oil
After it has been extracted, the oil should be kept in an airtight, colored glass container with the least amount of headspace feasible. Use a transparent glass jar to store hydrosol. For the longest possible shelf life, keep both in a cool, dry environment.
Clean the still
After distillation is complete, thoroughly clean the still and wipe up any leftover material. After that, clean the still with a food-grade, professional cleaner to remove any remaining traces of the recently distilled oil. We suggest Professional Brewers Wash, sometimes known as PBW. It works well on copper and stainless steel and is food grade. In fact, we spoke with 5 Star Chemical, the company that makes PBW, and inquired about using their cleanser for this use. They gave their approval and advised that the cleanser be diluted to between 50% and 75% of its normal strength because the copper won’t require a dose at its normal strength.
