Thank you for using Ask an Expert, and good morning. I’ve included some advice on how to get rid of creeping sedum, but proceed with caution since it can also destroy other plants.
Sandalwood soils with low fertility can support dense mats of mossy stonecrop. As with any lawn weed, identifying and addressing the cultural factors that encourage particular weeds in the lawn will unquestionably result in greater control than any one pesticide application. Broadleaf herbicides for turf can be especially tough to control mossy stonecrop. Soil health, fertility, and organic matter enhancement can all work very well with herbicide application. Herbicides that contain 2,4-D, dicamba, MCPP, MCPA, triclopyr, or mixes of these active components can exert some control when blended with desirable lawn grasses. Applications must be made repeatedly. The greatest option for controlling big, established patches of weeds may be herbicides that include glyphosate (Roundup, among others). Keep in mind that glyphosate is non-selective and will kill any present beneficial grasses.
Try slowly hand-pulling the sedum out before using the aforementioned approach to ensure that all the roots are gone. Apply the aforementioned technique carefully, making sure to target the sedum exclusively.
What is sedum’s killer?
There are more than 300 species of Sedum, a type of succulent from the family Hylotelephium that is sometimes known as “stonecrop.” It has five-petaled yellow flowers and thick, meaty, egg-shaped leaves that are light green in color. This drought-tolerant plant normally doesn’t grow very big and blooms in the summer or the fall. It can grow in dense mats in low-fertility soil due to its resilient, invasive character, which makes it challenging to eradicate. The application of a herbicide is typically necessary to control large sedum infestations.
Small sedum infestations should be eliminated by hand. Sedum plants should be dug out and removed by their roots using both your hands and, if necessary, a garden trowel. Remove the root, leaf, and stem of the sedum plant by carefully pulling it out of the ground. If the roots are not cut out, the plant will just re-grow. Dispose of sedum in a garbage can after manual removal.
For more extensive sedum infestations, use a herbicide containing 2,4-D, dicamba, MCPP, MCPA, triclopyr, or glyphosate. Sprays made from combinations of these components are likewise permissible. If you need to dilute the herbicide with water, see the manufacturer’s label. It should be noted that glyphoste is a nonselective herbicide that kills any plant or grass it comes into contact with, thus if you choose a herbicide that contains glyphoste, you will probably kill any nearby vegetation.
If necessary, add water to a garden sprayer along with the herbicide of your choice. To the sprayer, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of surfactant, a kind of “spreader” or “sticker” agent. Given that sedum leaves have a waxy surface and that surfactants make herbicides adhere to plant leaves more effectively, surfactants are advised for the eradication of sedum and related plants. Before using the garden sprayer on the damaged areas, shake the sprayer to combine the chemicals. To the point where the herbicide drips off the leaves, completely cover all sedum plants.
Do other plants get killed by Roundup?
The harm caused by herbicides was easily discovered during a recent landscaping check. We all know how annoying weeds can be, especially when there has been a lot of rain and they seem to be taking over your yard. Even though we advocate using organic and natural techniques to improve the health of your lawn, we are aware that there are situations when you may choose to use a chemical herbicide. It can be difficult to manage persistent weeds in hardscape elements like sidewalks and driveways. However, before using a herbicide like Roundup, you should fully understand how it operates and what it kills. Otherwise, you risk killing much more than just weeds.
Roundup was used by the homeowner to eliminate weeds in the lawn, but he was unaware that it would also kill the turfgrass nearby.
Roundup is referred to as a “herbicide that is not discriminating. All lawn grasses, perennials, annuals, shrubs, vines, and other plants can all be killed by it, therefore it can harm whatever plant it comes into touch with. Glyphosate, the active component of Roundup, is now present in many other brands of herbicides. Glyphosate prevents plant enzymes from producing amino acids. The treated plant will perish if these amino acids are not present. It mostly passes through the roots and some of the leaves for absorption.
You must be extremely careful to only apply a non-selective herbicide, such as glyphosate, to the plant you desire to kill. Even a few unintentional droplets on the nearby lawn or a nearby plant will harm or even kill it. When it’s windy, you should never apply herbicides because you risk causing a lot of collateral harm.
On get rid of weeds in the late winter and early spring, many homeowners and inexperienced lawn care businesses frequently apply herbicides like Roundup to their grass. They incorrectly believe that the herbicide won’t harm the warm-season lawn grass because it is dormant. Unfortunately, turfgrasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine rarely experience total winter dormancy. This means that pesticides in the environment can continue harm them “beyond season. The extent of the damage won’t become apparent until the spring, when the remaining lawn (what’s left of it) begins to emerge.
You will need to physically renovate the grass if you accidentally destroyed it with a herbicide like Roundup. Before more weeds take its place, you should go ahead and eliminate the dead lawn sections. Depending on the type of grass in your lawn, you should either re-seed the spots or re-sod the patches.
As we frequently advise, the majority of weeds will be organically suppressed by a healthy, thriving grass growing in healthy soil, eliminating the need for chemical herbicides like Roundup. We always prefer to stay away from chemical pesticides and fertilizers because they can harm wildlife and soil life.

Can plants metabolize Roundup?
Glyphosate is sprayed directly onto plant foliage [4] and enters the plant [2] by diffusion. By lowering the surface tension between the surface of the leaf and the sprayed droplet, the surfactant included in commercial formulations of glyphosate enables glyphosate to permeate the plant cuticle [4]. The fact that glyphosate is a systemic herbicide is due to the fact that once inside the plant, it enters the phloem and is delivered to metabolic sinks via the symplastic pathway [1].
The intermediate permeability theory explains the physiochemical dynamics of symplastic glyphosate transport. According to this notion, polar chemicals like glyphosate slowly pass across membranes and can enter phloem sieve tubes where they can be kept and used for long-distance transport [10]. When absorbed by roots, glyphosate may also be carried in the apoplastic pathway within the plant xylem [1]. Glyphosate translocation may be basipetal or acropetal for both foliar and root uptake, migrating toward sink tissues such meristems, flowers, and fruits [1,11,12,13,14]. Glyphosate cannot be metabolized by plants [1]. In various crop species, including beets, barley, cotton, maize, and rapeseed, glyphosate absorption through roots has been demonstrated [13,15,16,17,18,19]. Because roots are the primary intercept of glyphosate in field runoff, this exposure pathway is important.
Mode of Action and Effects in Plants
Herbicides are categorized according to how they work. The category of amino acid inhibitors includes glyphosate [20]. In particular, the inhibition of enolpyruvylshikimic phosphate (EPSP) synthase by glyphosate prevents the synthesis of aromatic amino acids [4,21]. The creation of chorismate, an intermediate precursor molecule for the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan [4] as well as for a number of secondary metabolites, via the shikimic acid pathway is dependent on this enzyme. Figure 1 summarizes the shikimic acid pathway and many of its metabolites.
How can you prevent the spread of sedum?
Sedums have everything! This perennial produces clusters of star-shaped flowers that bloom from midsummer to fall, along with lush, luscious green leaves. It attracts pollinators and is simple to maintain. How to plant sedum in your garden is provided here.
About Sedum
Sedum, a genus of succulents with fleshy stems and succulent leaves commonly known as “stonecrop,” is one of the easiest perennial plants to grow. This sedum cultivar is suitable for practically all gardens because it is a hardy plant that thrives in shallow soil.
Based on how the plants develop, we like to split sedum into two primary categories: low-growing sedum and upright sedum.
- Sedum that grows slowly spreads throughout the ground and only grows to a height of a few inches (or less). As a result, they are ideal for use as ground covers along pathways, in rock gardens, or cascading over stone walls.
- Sedum that is tall or upright often grows in tall, upright clumps with dense clusters of tiny reddish-pink flowers in their huge flower heads. They make excellent candidates for border gardens or pollinator gardens due to their height and lovely blossoms. Despite upright sedum’s recent reclassification into the Hylotelephium genus, it is still frequently referred to as a “sedum.”
Although they prefer full sun, Sedum may tolerate partial shade. Plant sedum in full sun to enhance overwintering potential if you live somewhere with long, cold winters (Zone 5 and colder).
Although sedum thrives in sandy or poor soil, it needs to be well-drained to prevent fungus problems. If cultivated in soil that retains too much moisture, it is highly prone to developing root rot. Additionally, overly fertile soil can promote lanky growth, which can cause upright sedum species to bloom with a top-heavy appearance.
When to Plant Sedum
- Typically, sedum is purchased in plugs or pots and then planted in the garden. Sedum is best planted in the spring, after the risk of frost but before the summer heat arrives.
- In early spring, sow sedum seeds in average to rich soil that is well-drained. (Learn more about adding amendments to the soil and getting it ready for planting.)
How to Plant Sedum
- Depending on the kind, space plants anywhere between 6 inches and 2 feet apart. While upright sedums tend to keep more compact, low-growing sedums will quickly fill in any gaps.
- When planting whole plants or divisions, dig a hole deep enough so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil’s surface. Then, insert the plant, and then cover the area around it with soil. Avoid burying upright sedum stems in particular as this can cause rot.
- Planting cuttings: Sedum is easily propagated through cuttings, just like other succulents. Under the right lighting and watering conditions, the cutting should easily root if the cut end is simply inserted into the soil.
- Sedum plants require little maintenance once they are established. Check on your plants frequently over the summer to make sure they are not getting too dry, and water them (sparingly) if necessary. Sedum shouldn’t require extra watering if your area receives rain at least one every two weeks.
- After flowering, prune the plants to keep their shape or confine them to a single location.
- Advice: After blooming, leave upright sedum flowers alone for more winter interest. They will produce lovely seed heads.
- To stop your plants from spreading, remember to divide them in the spring or fall. Divisions and cuttings root easily all summer long.
- Sedum humifusum has stunning, bright yellow flowers and produces an excellent ground cover.
How do I get rid of the cacti in my yard?
The greatest time to control purslane weed is while it is young. They can actually throw their seeds far from the mother plant and infest a number of other areas of your garden if you let them mature to the seed stage.
Purslane can be removed most effectively by hand pulling. Since a single purslane plant typically covers a big area, you can quickly remove purslane weed from broad regions with minimal effort.
These plants can also be treated with herbicide, however it is most effective when applied to young plants.
The difficult aspect of managing purslane is not getting it out of the garden. Keeping purslane out of your garden and yard is the challenging part. A mature plant has the capacity to scatter its seeds distant from the mother plant, as was already indicated. Purslane can also re-root from any of its stems or leaves. New growth can emerge from even a small fragment of the plant remaining on the soil.
Purslane can also continue to ripen its seeds after being removed from the ground, which is another bonus. So even if you discard the purslane in your trash or compost pile, it will continue develop and release its seeds onto the ground in your garden.
Additionally, purslane seeds can remain in the soil for years as they wait to be exposed to light once again in order to germinate. As you can see, this weed is a survivist among plants, which makes controlling purslane challenging.
Taking all of this into account, be careful to dispose of the purslane appropriately while removing it. Before discarding purslane weeds, place them in a paper or plastic bag. To avoid the plant re-rooting, make sure you completely eradicate all purslane from a given region.
A thick layer of mulch or paper covering a previously affected region will help get rid of purslane because the seeds need light to germinate. To prevent the fresh seeds from germinating, you can also use a pre-emergent herbicide.
Once you understand how purslane survives, getting rid of it permanently will be simple. Making sure that the purslane weed and all of its seeds are removed from the garden is all that is necessary to effectively control purslane.

Are sedums weeds?
Sedum, often known as mossy stonecrop, can be challenging to get rid of from lawns.
A tiny, fleshy plant typically grown in attractive beds that spreads to lawns is known as mossy stonecrop, also known by its scientific name Sedum acre. Once established in lawns, it can be exceedingly challenging to eradicate since it could displace attractive turfgrasses and turn into a significant weed.
In sandy soils with limited fertility, mossy stonecrop can grow dense mats. Due to the waxy cuticle, which restricts herbicide absorption, controlling mossy stonecrop with broadleaf herbicides is exceedingly challenging. Although common broadleaf herbicides like those containing mixtures of 2,4-D, dicamba, MCPP, MCPA, or triclopyr may be successful, it is likely that numerous treatments will be necessary. The application of a herbicide will be much more effective if a surfactant (spreader/sticker agents) is used to help the herbicide get past the waxy cuticle.
Trampling mossy stonecrop to break down the cuticle before applying a herbicide may increase control in place of using a surfactant. You could also use a non-selective herbicide, but be aware that it will also harm the turf.
- Stonecrop with moss: (Sedum acre)
- The Crassulaceae family (Orpine)
- Low-growing, perennial with a spreading life cycle.
- The leaves are thick, succulent, pointy, and range in shape from egg-shaped to rounded. Small, waxy, alternating leaves typically have pale green hues.
- Matted stems have leaves that closely overlap one another.
- Fruit and flowers: In the months of June and July, five-petaled, bright yellow flowers bloom. Pointed seedpods are used to generate seeds.
- Reproduction occurs through seeds, horizontal creeping stems, and stem fragments.
