Do you plant the entire seed packet? Let’s talk tomatoes. If a packet has 25 seeds, should you plant them all? Some could answer “yes” because you will have extras in case any of them fail. Some will object, asking if you actually intend to plant each of the 25 tomato plants. And if you did plant them all, keep in mind that you will eventually need to transfer them from the seed cell trays into a pot that is one size larger. Before transferring them outside, you might even need to transfer them into a 1-gallon size pot. This necessitates extra potting soil and pots.

The fact that the seed packs I buy and sell are envelopes inside envelopes is one of my favorite things about them. I frequently plant seeds in 32 cell, 3-3.5 depth, black plastic trays. They are a good size for me and they suit my seedling heat mats perfectly. I estimate that I use 8 cups of dirt per tray. I’ll review my notes. Before you place your seeds in the trays, your containers or seedling trays should be filled with pre-moistened mix or medium (as they call it). If a bowl is not available, you can wet the mixture in a plastic bag instead.
