How To Keep Zinnias From Falling Over

You might be unsure of the proper method for staking zinnias. The simplest approach uses a stake for each plant. Since a sizable portion of the bottom must be buried in the ground, use solid stakes that are longer than you anticipate the zinnia to grow to at maturity. Because they dislike the cold, zinnias prefer to be planted once it has warmed up a little. However, in chilly Washington, we start our plants in 72-cell trays in the greenhouse 4 to 6 weeks before our last spring frost. Pinching your zinnias when they are young is the key to getting the longest stems from them.
