Fiber reactive dye is the ideal sort of tie dye to use on cotton t-shirts. These dyes offer incredibly vivid effects and are colorfast on natural materials like cotton and linen. Fiber-reactive dyes are permanent if used properly; they won’t fade, even after numerous washings.
Fiber reactive dyes are available as kits under the Tulip brand or as Procion MX dyes.

Rit dyes are not suggested for use in tie-dying. My experience has shown that the colors are too light and are prone to fading in hot water. Rit dyes aren’t my first choice for the cold-water, squirt bottle style of tie-dyeing we’re discussing in this post because they require heat to set.
Tie-dye works well on natural textiles like cotton and linen. Fiber reactive dyes are designed to react with natural fibers to give vivid, colorful results (such as Tulip and Procion MX).

Do I need to use soda ash with Tulip dye?
Does using Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kits need pre-treating fabrics with soda ash? Not at all, no! All you need to do to create all of your favorite tie-dye patterns with our one-step dyes is add water and shake them up. They are uniquely made with soda ash already in the dye powder.
Which fabrics can be coloured with reactive dyes?
Cellulosic fabrics like cotton and linen are frequently printed with reactive dyes because of their wide color spectrum. In reactive dye printing, dye molecules infiltrate into the fibers and, following fixing, form chemical interactions with them. Reactive dyes are the most often used colorants in the printing business, making up 30% of all colorants used, despite pigments being the most popular colorant for textile printing (see Table 20.4). (Stork, 2002).
Contrary to pigments, most dyes are substantial to fibers if the coloration technique’s chemistry is proper. To create the molecular connections between the dyes and the fibers necessary for reactive dye printing chemistry, an alkali, such as sodium bicarbonate, is used as the fixing agent. A thickening agent is also needed when printing with reactive dyes. The most used thickener is sodium alginate, a seaweed-derived substance. Other thickening agents, which are frequently employed in other procedures, rely on carbohydrates and would react with the dyes, leading to subpar printing outcomes.
Fixation procedures typically involve steaming the printed cloth with highly saturated steam, followed by hot water washing to remove the thickening agent and extra dye particles. Fixation procedures cure reactive dyes to the materials.
Rit Dye
Rit dye is a non-toxic, multi-purpose union dye that is adaptable and simple to use. Natural fibers including cotton, linen, wool, silk, rayon, and nylon fabric can all be dyed. Cotton blends that also contain spandex or polyester will have a softer, less vivid color.
Rit has a disadvantage over fiber reactive dyes in that its colors are less vibrant and less colorfast.
Rit color must be activated with hot water to achieve maximum vibrancy. Depending on the type of fabric, adding vinegar or salt will assist the fabric absorb the color. Rit is available as a liquid as a powder. Because liquid dye is more concentrated than powder dye, only half as much liquid is required.

Dylon Dye
In order to form a permanent connection, Dylon permanent dye undergoes a chemical reaction with the cellulose present in cotton, rayon, and silk. The colors will be more vibrant than rit dye and it won’t fade. Heat is not required for it to operate. Soda ash serves as a fixative for fiber reactive colors. You don’t need to buy the soda ash separately because it is already included in Dylon Permanent Dye.
While fiber reactive dyes offer the best intensity and persistence, Rit dye works well on a wider range of materials.
Can I use salt for the soda ash?
However, soda ash is not widely available. Using salt rather than soda ash is one way to assist the color to adhere to the fibers. The dye bath solution is safe for the skin when salt is used in place of soda, making it suitable for use with younger children.
Is Tulip a reliable tie-dye supplier?
