In this chapter, we provide a general overview of the origin, botanical classification, distribution, claimed health benefits, genetic resource and conservation, crop cultivation practices, recent advancements in biotechnology, and molecular biology, as well as their application for crop improvement in relation to conventional breeding techniques for spring onions. In this regard, somatic hybridization and mutational breeding are two promising methods for creating novel, highly productive and disease-resistant cultivars.
