Typically, the Sweet Pea Shurb’s (Polygala fruticosa) extended flowering season lasts from early summer through fall. The plants I’ve grown in Zone 9b seem to bloom at least occasionally throughout the year. There are a few factors that can influence how it grows and blooms after it has been introduced.
If they are not clipped, they may overgrow after a few years, lose some of their flower color, and flower less. The sweet pea shrubs will remain fuller, less woody, and produce more blossoms with a little pruning. If desired, you can remove 6 to 8 inches of the shrub’s top and side growth to encourage new development and give it a better shape. When trimming, it’s preferable to only remove around a third of the plant’s foliage. When pruning, make sure to always remove any dead, damaged growth or wilting blossoms. Anytime this plant is not blooming is the ideal time to prune it. In California, my plants tend to bloom all year, so late winter or early spring pruning is acceptable. Since this plant recovers quickly and thrives quickly, cutting off any existing flowers at other times of the year won’t do any harm.
The Sweet Pea Shrub only needs moderate to little water after it is established, which your plant should already be.
