Since I’ve been growing lilacs since 1992, I can only speak to my experiences with them. I don’t claim to be an expert in farming; rather, I see every day as an opportunity to learn. Now that I’ve said that, I can tell you what our farm does to encourage flowering.
Cold winters and our alkaline soil are both crucial for successful flowering. We experience unusually hot summers because we are located in a high desert. Lilacs need at least six hours of sunlight each day, and here in Acton, we have enough of that. Since lilacs are deciduous (they lose their leaves in the winter), we gradually cut back on watering them starting in September until we completely stop by Halloween. We often see our first frost around Halloween or soon after, and the lilacs lose their leaves in preparation for winter.
Typically, we apply fertilizer prior to the first rains of the late fall and winter. When the lilacs begin to break bud, too much nitrogen will cause them to enter a growth mode as opposed to a flowering mode. We employ regulated fertilizer with the formula 0-10-5, which has a low first number and higher middle and last numbers. We use 0-25-0 when fertilizing plants that are between one and two years old. We use fertilizers sparingly since they thrive so nicely here. The typical way of a three-number identification serves to describe the majority of fertilizers. The percentage of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium in the fertilizer is represented by each number.
We prune the lilacs after the spring flowering season. If we haven’t finished trimming them in May or early June, we don’t touch them now because that’s when the lilacs start setting their buds for the following season. Lilacs require new growth to produce healthy blooms. In order for overgrown lilacs to regenerate, a third of the old growth must be removed every season for three years.
All of our stock arrived dormant with stems and a root system but no soil when it was planted bare root in the spring. They were preserved with damp cedar shavings for transportation. We soaked them for 24 hours after removing them from their packaging paper before burying them. Due to the compact dirt we have here during the dry months, we spaced the plants 5 feet apart and drilled the holes somewhat deeper and about half as wide as the root system. We would backfill some of the dirt, add water to the hole to let it dry out and settle, and then plant it at the same depth as before, making sure that all of the roots were covered. We didn’t modify since we thought it would be best to let them quickly adapt to our soil type. We drenched them when they were planted and watered them every three days for the first several years of the growing season because our soil drains efficiently.

An evergreen lilac tree?
There are various varieties of California lilac for use in landscaping. While some are low-growing, compact groundcovers that rarely grow higher than 6 inches (15 cm), others are upright bushes that reach heights of 8 or 9 feet (2 to 2.5 meters). The vivid to light blue flowers on evergreen plants with small to medium-sized glossy green leaves serve as a decorative accent. In addition to Oregon, California, and Washington, several species of California lilac can also be found as far away as Guatemala.
The Pacific Northwest is home to 12 different species of Ceanothus. For the greatest flowers, these plants demand dry soil and full sun. If you reside in a region where deer are present, protection is necessary because they enjoy California lilac particularly.
The lustrous foliage of ceanothus plants has three parallel leaf veins that give them their distinctive look. While smaller leafed shrubs have serrated, almost holly-like leaves, larger foliaged plants have whole margins.
One of the crucial characteristics of California lilac is its capacity to fix nitrogen in the soil, which benefits both home gardeners and the environment. The real star of the show are the flowers. While the majority have deep blue flowers in terminal clusters, certain varieties may have lighter blue, lavender, or even white flowers.
In the winter, do lilac bushes remain green?
Lilacs have the ability to survive some very harsh winters intact and provide joy to many people in the spring since they are exceptionally cold-resistant. They are tall, upright shrubs with heart-shaped green leaves and large, pointy clusters of fragrant lavender flowers. There are many varieties with white flowers. The maximum size of a plant is 15 feet tall and 12 feet broad.
Lilacs can thrive in little shade, but full sun is preferable for them. They favor well-drained, neutral soils. Every now and then, remove undesirable suckers and old trunks.
Uses: After their mid-spring bloom, lilacs are good accent plants but lack any unique characteristics. They can also be grown in a row to create a loose, colorful hedge.

Do lilac bushes hibernate during the winter?
One of the most well-liked scented multiblooming shrubs is the common purple lilac (Syringa vulgaris). In USDA growth zones 3 through 7, this plant flourishes. Lilacs are sturdy plants, so maintaining them is not very difficult. Although they can survive temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 degrees Celsius), they may require some protection from harsh gusts that can harm the flower buds.
Lilacs require chilly winters to help set the blossoms for the next season. There isn’t much upkeep required while the shrub is dormant throughout the colder months. Dehydration brought on by frozen soils and arid winter winds is the biggest issue for lilacs during the winter. The roots are less likely to be harmed by freezing water when the soil is well-draining.
Lilacs can they endure snow?
One of the decorative plants that can survive the harshest winters is the lilac. Are lilacs protected from the cold? They can tolerate -40°F (-40°C) weather, however they may require some protection from freezing gusts that can harm the flower buds. To stop freezing water from harming their roots and destroying the tree, they need soil that drains efficiently. Lilacs that haven’t been grafted to a rootstock are more resilient than those that have.
Good siting and a healthy plant are the foundation of lilac winter maintenance. The plant requires alkaline to neutral soil and at least eight hours of direct sunlight. Avoid placing them next to a light-colored building or wall while planting them since the reflection could result in winter burn.
Darker structures can actually afford lilac winter protection, and they create a stunning front-of-house display. However, don’t plant them too close to the foundation because their roots may eventually cause problems. Remove the dead flower heads to encourage the bud-forming process. Lilac shrub winterization is not as labor-intensive as it is for sensitive plants.
Where should a lilac bush be planted?
When the lilacs begin to blossom, it is a solid indicator that spring has arrived for good. While many people only have a limited knowledge of common lilac (also known as French lilac) shrubs that can reach a height of 15 feet or more, there are now a lot more options available than there were fifty years ago. Some varieties that rebloom enhance the garden’s appeal the entire growing season.
How to Choose Lilacs
The common lilac is what you will most likely find when you go plant shopping. This traditional plant comes in a variety of cultivars and variations, each of which yields fragrant spring flowers in pink, purple, white, or even combinations of those hues. Common lilacs are typically the most fragrant variety of lilac and can grow to be rangy and large.
Rebloomers have arrived in the garden center thanks to recent introductions of hybrids between the common lilac and other shrub-type lilacs. Some of these more recent types are a little less fragrant, but they also tend to be smaller, bloom more frequently throughout the growing season, and have fewer powdery mildew issues.
The tree lilac is another common variety of lilac. It can grow to a height of around 20 feet and blooms with cream-colored flowers in the middle of the summer. Though it doesn’t require much trimming, keep in mind that the tree lilac is a tree, not a shrub.
Where to Plant Lilacs
Lilacs should be planted in full light (at least 6 to 8 hours per day), as too much shadow will prevent them from blooming. Lilacs also prefer moist, well-drained soil that is slightly alkaline.
When to Plant Lilacs
Before the ground freezes in the late fall is the ideal time to plant lilacs. After the earth thaws in the early spring, that is the next ideal period to plant. Lilacs will likely need to be planted as soon as you can locate them at the garden center, which is great; if you choose to do so during a warmer season, they might require additional watering.
How to Prepare the Soil for Planting Lilacs
A soil test should be performed prior to planting since lilacs thrive in slightly alkaline (6.5 to 7.0 pH), moist, well-drained soil that is high in organic matter. Lime must be added to raise the pH if it is below 5.5. It’s time to get the soil ready when you’ve obtained the ideal pH. Improve individual planting holes by mixing Miracle-Gro Garden Soil for Trees & Shrubs in a 50:50 ratio with the natural soil to give lilacs a nutrient-rich start. Iron and phosphorus are also present in this garden soil to promote root development and ward off leaf fading.
Does lilac grow quickly?
The lilac is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with an erratic, rounded shape. When young, it grows quickly, but as it ages, its growth slows to roughly one foot every year. The stems’ sturdy wood has a dark gray to gray-brown color. The leaves are light green underneath and dark green to blue-green above. The clusters of four petal blooms, which come in lilac, light purple, or lavender hues, bloom in April or May. They have a strong fragrance. Although the lilac thrives best in sunny locations, it cannot stand hot, muggy weather. It requires moist, well-drained soil that is neutral or just a little bit alkaline in pH. Peat or leaf mold can be added to the soil as a supplement. As soon as they start to fade, old flowers should be removed. Lilacs should be pruned as soon as they finish blooming. Pruning the shrub is preferred since it will highlight the medium-aged wood, which will still contribute to the plant’s good size and produce nice blooms. Remove a third of the earliest stems at ground level each year to accomplish this. Any remedial trimming, like removing competing branches or sucker growth, can be done concurrently. Pruning older lilacs as small, multiple-branched trees will highlight a few massive, old trunks while removing sucker growth and making them a focal point of the landscape. The shrub can also be pruned into a tree with a single stem. Lilacs that are overgrown can be pruned to a few inches above the surface. They will bloom once more in three to four years, Depending on the mature height, space your plants 3–4 feet apart if you want a hedge.
Do lilacs prefer shade or the sun?
Full light and well-drained soil are ideal for lilac growth. Lilacs won’t flower well if they are cultivated in partial sunlight or shade. The bushes can live for hundreds of years after they have established themselves in a new location, even if it may take them three to four years to do so. The plant’s growth may be impacted by the soil pH (alkalinity or acidity of the soil). A slightly acidic to alkaline soil is ideal for lilac growth. Because of their frequent high acidity, New England soils may need to be modified for the greatest lilac growth.
Pruning the blooming stem back to a set of leaves each year will stop seed formation and ensure that there will be an abundance of flowers. Good flowering years may be followed by terrible years if this is not done. Winter trimming will get rid of flower buds since they are generated in the summer before they blossom.
Branch out any diseased, damaged, or dead wood. Renewing pruning is necessary for tall, lanky, and poorly flowering plants; for three years, cut around one-third of the oldest stems at ground level each year. This promotes the development of strong new stems from the base. The plant should have fully recovered after three years, with flowers growing back to nose height.
Despite how resilient lilacs are, they nevertheless require plenty of water as they grow. Lilacs prefer soil that is both moist and well-draining.
Powdery mildew fungus (Microsphaera alni), lilac borer (Podosesia syringae), and scale are the most problematic lilac issues in our region (oyster-shell scale, Lepidosaphes ulmi and prunicola scale, Pseudaulacaspis prunicola). The leaves appear to have pale streaks of powdery mildew on them. Even though it is ugly, it is rarely severe in our environment. In stems and larger branches, often one to two feet above ground level, borers leave 1/8-inch holes. A modest infestation may be disregarded, but more than a few borers require professional diagnosis and treatment. While prunicola scale covers bark with a dusty white mass, oyster-shell scale is appropriately named since the pests resemble 1/8-inch oyster shells on the stems. Control adult scale by chopping off branches that are extensively infested; control microscopic baby “crawlers” with a strong hose spray of water (use a hand lens to see scale). Summer oil and dormant oil both work well.
