- being a senior female with a GPA of at least 3.2
- Make a statement as an ambassador for your school.
- possess a love for Pierce County
- lead with a desire to help others
- And have the drive to keep honing your leadership abilities throughout your high school senior year.
What does a princess of the daffodil do?
Twenty-three senior women from participating Pierce County High Schools make up the Daffodil Royal Court. The Princesses learn many priceless lessons and experiences during their year with the Festival, enhancing their public speaking abilities, tact, and composure as well as their self-confidence through the interactions they have with their local community.
The Daffodil Princesses continue to work throughout the summer as they attend numerous out-of-town parades as Pierce County Council-designated Official Ambassadors of Pierce County.

Even COVID is powerless to stop the Daffodil Festival. Last year, when the state shut down, we had to essentially cancel plans at the last minute. This year, the cherished princesses are back in all their splendor. At the Washington State Spring Fair earlier this month, they had a great time meeting guests. On April 26, the Daffodil Royal Court gathered at Farm 12 in Puyallup for the Queen’s Coronation celebration.
Each of the 23 princesses entered the stage carrying a bouquet of daffodils as she was introduced, gave a one-minute speech, and responded to an unexpected question. They all looked stunning in their yellow dresses and matching yellow face masks.
It was time for the five judges to select the new queen after the 2019 Daffodil Queen Katie Gilbert gave her final speech. This was not an easy task given how poised and well spoken each princess was that evening. The judges, according to Coronation emcee Jamie Gregory, “The hardest duty in the house is yours.
As anticipation grew, Puyallup High School student Katie Rose Abegglen was named the 2021 Daffodil Queen. As she received the crown, robe, and scepter used by Daffodil Queens for decades, the audience cheered and applauded.

Guadalupe Perez-Dolores of Sumner High School was selected by her fellow princesses as Miss Congeniality, and the Tacoma Yacht Club Shipmates will award her with a $1,000 prize.
The audience immediately filled to capacity with family members and supporters of the princesses, so it was necessary to limit the number of people who could attend the ceremony in person. However, everything was aired on Facebook, making Coronation accessible to many who may not have previously known about it.
In this year’s 88th edition of the Pierce County Daffodil Festival, 23 outstanding young women were chosen to represent Pierce County as goodwill ambassadors as well as princesses for the year 2021 behind computer screens. Each princess applicant presented a one-minute speech on this year’s Daffodil topic after a 10-minute panel interview via Zoom “Go after your star.
All of the young princesses are 3.2 GPA or higher high school seniors who participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. They will add a long list of volunteer work, activities, and public appearances to their schedules that will help Pierce County and the area they serve.
