Particularly with more recent kinds like “Primal Scream” and “Ruby Spider,” which have large 8- to 9-inch petals, their vibrant flowers heighten their allure. The potential for sales for stores is substantially increased when plants are in bloom while more people are shopping.

Over the past few years, Walters Gardens in west Michigan has been conducting Hemerocallis forcing trials to assist their grower-retailer clients develop methods for producing flowering daylilies for spring sales. In these studies, a variety of cultivars were used, and the time to bloom and plant quality characteristics were assessed.

This year, Walters Gardens concentrated on testing daylilies in two climates: chilly (60 F) with natural day lengths and warm (75 F) with 16-hour days utilizing day extension lighting. Daylilies that were started in early January and went dormant and vernalized were used.

The daylilies were introduced into each of the testing environments on January 9, 2012. Each variety’s time to attain visible flower scapes (visible buds) and grow open blooms was noted. Table 1 presents the outcomes.

In this experiment, day duration had no bearing on flowering; plants blossomed during both natural and long days. Hemerocallis are categorized as day neutral plants, therefore this is most likely why. When they are grown in high light intensities, they do flower more consistently and produce more flowers per plant.

Each daylily variety had a different flowering time. The ability to offer adequate cooling on warm sunny days and the outside weather conditions had a significant impact on the planned 24 hour temperature averages.

Seasonality is a further consideration for producers. If daylilies are planted later in the spring rather than in the middle of winter, as in this trial, they will bloom much more quickly. My prior observations have shown that forcing daylilies in March or April as opposed to January or February results in a two-week reduction in the time it takes for them to flower.

Daylilies don’t necessarily need to be grown in conditions with high temperatures for them to bloom. When they are grown in cool temperatures, they will also blossom, however it will take a little longer. For most cultivars in these trials, the time to flower increased by eight to fifteen days when the temperature was lowered from 75 F to 60 F. For optimal results, I advise growing daylilies in areas with strong light intensities at 65 F.

Hemerocallis are simple to grow, and the crop’s uniformity, performance, and marketability will increase by following the production guidelines below and incorporating the findings from the forcing trials mentioned above. The most common way to start daylilies is using bare root divisions. The majority of growers use 1-gallon containers filled with a well-drained commercial growth mix to plant bare root starting materials of grade #1. The crown should be planted between a half-inch and an inch beneath the media surface. After potting them, thoroughly water them before setting them in the production area.

Generally speaking, fertilization is not required in the first few weeks of production. Daylilies have a moderate appetite after they are established and actively developing. Liquid fertilizer applications can offer fertility by applying 75 to 125 ppm with each irrigation or 200 to 250 ppm once or twice per week.

Many gardeners use controlled release fertilizers to give nutrients by either topdressing with the medium suggested rate or incorporating the low to medium recommended rate. The media’s pH level needs to stay between 6.2 and 6.7. Avoid overfertilizing because it could cause soft growth.

Transplant #1 grade bare root daylilies eight to fifteen weeks prior to the targeted sales window in order to generate flowering plants for spring sales. To estimate the length of time till flowering for each individual variety, consult Table 1. The blooming classification can be used to estimate the time to flower for cultivars not included in this table. For instance, when growing daylilies in the late winter with a 24 hour average temperature of 65 F, early blooming cultivars will flower in around eight to ten weeks, midway cultivars in about eleven to thirteen weeks, and late season cultivars in about fourteen to sixteen weeks. Daylilies will take roughly six to ten weeks to complete if they are started in the spring for sales in the middle to end of the summer.

The fungicides thiophanate-methyl or myclobutanil can be used to control leaf streak in order to reduce the spread of the disease and shield sensitive new growth from infection. As soon as new growth appears, start spraying. Make three or four applications, spaced two weeks apart. For examples of items, see Table 1.

Lilies prefer moist, well-drained soil and good air circulation. They thrive in either full sun or partial shade. Corky, brown patches on infected bulbs turn powdery. Keep a tight eye on everything and, if required, use diatomaceous earth or another organic pesticide to dust.

Additionally prone to fungi-related ailments like rust and gray mold are lily plants. When possible, avoid overhead watering, and use organic fungicides to stop additional infection.
