Most members of the stonecrop family can be propagated similarly, and sedums are among the easiest plants to grow. You only need a leaf or small piece of stem. A new succulent will quickly grow if a stonecrop stem is planted shallowly in a highly gritty medium or if a leaf is placed on top of sandy soil. Within a few weeks, the plant material will root and grow a brand-new stonecrop.
Can cuttings of sedum grow in water?
Pick a healthy sedum plant stem that is about six inches (15 cm) long, and cut it just below a leaf node using a fresh pair of scissors. Any additional leaves that may be submerged in the water should be gently removed. Put your stem in a container with rainwater or room-temperature water so that it covers the leaf node (but not any leaves). Put your jar somewhere bright, such a windowsill or an outdoor table under cover. To keep the water from becoming stagnant and your stem from rotting, make sure to change the water every few days.
You can plant your fresh sedum as soon as roots begin to form, which is often after a few weeks. You should either plant the sedum in the garden or pot it and overwinter it indoors to plant in the spring, depending on the time of year you took your cutting (and where you reside). By starting your sedum propagation earlier in the growing season, you will give your plant enough time to establish itself in the garden before the winter.
Is it possible to grow sedum stonecrop from leaves?
Using this technique, you can possibly produce hundreds of new sedum plants because each leaf on your existing sedum has the potential to develop into a new plant. In comparison to establishing your plants from seeds, leaf propagation is quicker and more consistent.
Using a very sharp knife and only healthy leaves, take leaf cuttings from your sedum and make sure that each one has a short length of stem. Put the stalk into wet potting soil after dipping the end of the leaf in rooting hormone.
Try to maintain a temperature of about 75 degrees Fahrenheit at the bottom of the tray or pot if you have a gardening heating pad. Spray water on a regular basis to keep the humidity levels appropriate. You can also use clear plastic to cover your tray or pot.
After two to three weeks, the leaves should be firmly rooted, and at the base, new plantlets should be growing. The old leaf can now be thrown away while the fresh plantlets that are growing around the stem are utilised for transplanting.
How are sedum plants propagated?
One of those essential succulents that can be found in almost any succulent planter is the sedum. Sedums are advantageous in any garden because of the following characteristics. They can withstand extreme cold. They can withstand drought. Pests hardly ever bother them. They create a lovely ground cover. They can be used as hanging plants in containers as trailing plants. There are countless different kinds. It is simple to grow them.
One choice you have is to propagate the sedum by cuttings if you have a plant and want to use it in additional planters or around the yard.
- Cut a 2- to 5-inch portion of the sedum plant.
- Plant the cutting in a well-draining soil.
- Continue to mist the newly planted cutting (water it like you would water petunias or another annual)
- Its roots will start to take hold and grow after a few weeks.
People frequently question us at Young’s, “How deep should the cuttings be planted?” while planting sedum cuttings. Here is a snapshot comparison of shallow vs. deep planted cuttings.
They were each planted in a little pot. The other was buried three inches beneath the first one.
Would the deeper-planted cutting have a more robust root system? We took the cuttings out of the ground precisely 3 weeks after planting them to observe the development of their root systems.
The shallowly planted cutting had a robust and vigorous root system. Compared to just three weeks of growth, it appeared significantly better.
Despite having roots that extended the entire length of the stem on the deeper-planted cutting, these roots don’t appear to be quite as robust as those of the other cuttings.
Sedum cuttings can be planted at any depth, in our opinion. They easily re-root when planted at any depth. We advise putting them 1 inch or so deep. Sedums don’t end up having very deep roots as they age and grow. Many succulents, like aeoniums, have shallow roots in order to absorb the least amount of soil moisture.
A sedum plant spreads roots from the middle of the stem as it grows, creeping along the ground. These roots serve as the plant’s anchor and aid in supplying it with the nutrients and water it needs to grow. Sedums form vibrant, distinctive ground covers that look great in any yard or container.
What makes sedum and stonecrop different from each other?
Everything depends on how they are arranged. For purposes of identification, the gardener just needs to keep in mind the three classifiers of genus, species, and cultivar. A group of closely related species is referred to as a genus.
Within the genus category, species are a more precise classification that have viable progeny. For instance, Sedum is the genus and glaucophyllum is the species of Appalachian stonecrop that thrives in rocky, alkaline soil, respectively, in the name Sedum glaucophyllum.
The sedum that has been chosen for favorable characteristics is further categorized by a cultivar. On the plant tag, Sedum glaucophullum ‘Dazzleberry,’ so the plant would look burgundy rather than green.
Understanding the distinctions between sedum, succulents, and cactus will be made easier by being aware of these classifications. Succulent is a descriptive term for a plant trait rather than a scientific classification. Succulents may retain water in arid regions or soil conditions because some of their leaves, roots, or stems are thickened and fleshy. There may also be plants with succulent characteristics and a typical plant stem within the same species. Numerous plants have succulent traits that enable them to cope with dry environments. Due to their dry origins and special characteristics, succulents can withstand drought.
Another succulent trait that cactus exhibits is the retention of water within the structure of the plant. Typically, cacti have thorns. Hobbyists who raise cacti and succulents frequently distinguish between them based on whether or not they have thorns rather than strictly on the botanical classification, which is sometimes more difficult to perceive. Members of the Cactaceae family include cacti. Confusion is increased since plants may have adaptations to dry circumstances that make them seem related.
Sedum is a genus of flowering plants that also exhibits the succulent traits of having leaves and stems that can store water. Sedums belong to the family Crassulaceae. Due of its stone-like look, sedum is also known as stonecrop. White flowers are present on Appalachian stonecrop. Sedums, which have 600 species in the Northern Hemisphere, include shrubs, annuals, perennials, and creeping herbs. Succulent traits can be found in both sedum and cacti, despite the fact that they belong to two separate plant families.
It might be wise to look for cultivars with succulent traits if one wants to create a rock garden or grow drought-tolerant plants. These plants have interesting body shapes and are lovely. There are many different kinds of flowering, creeping, low-growing, or towering plants that, once established, require little maintenance.
Propagating Sedum Using Seeds
Care should be taken when handling sedum seeds. They are relatively lightweight, thin, and tiny. You can either buy them from gardening stores or gather them from your home’s existing Sedum plant.
Here’s how to get your own seeds from a Sedum plant that already exists:
As soon as the Sedum plant flowering period is finished and the created seed heads begin to turn brown instead of green, pluck numerous seedheads to gather your seeds.
To allow the seedheads to dry, place them in a paper bag and store them in a cool, dry location for at least two weeks. The seeds will decay if you plant them before they have dried or if you keep them in a moist environment.
When the seedheads are totally dry, take them out of the bag and thresh them with your fingers to collect the seeds. This should be done over a very fine screen that is set over a basin or tray. This keeps all the detritus on the screen while allowing seeds to pass and gather in the container.
After gathering all the seeds, place them in a bag that is marked with the name of the Sedum and the date of harvest. A Sedum plant that blooms in the fall can be seeded the following spring. You can keep the seeds in your refrigerator for a year while you wait to plant them.
The ideal period to grow Sedum plants from seed is in the spring, when temperatures range from 45 to 65F.
Prepare a sterile, fine-textured soil mixture for seed starting, then wet it to make it damp but not drenched. Make sure not to cover the seeds with too much earth as you sow the seeds in the potting mix.
The seeds typically germinate in two to four weeks, but you must maintain soil moisture during this time. Repot the seedlings once they have grown, or put them in our garden, and care for them till they are healthy.
How to Propagate Sedum from Leaf Cutting
Sedum plant reproduction from seed is slower and less reliable than sedum plant reproduction from leaf cuttings. Every Sedum leaf is a possible cutting that could grow into a new plant, so you have the opportunity to fill your garden or containers with brand-new Stonecrop plants.
The following materials are required for Sedum leaf cutting propagation:
- Pruning shears/sharp knives
- An alcohol rub
- hormone for roots
You can plant your Sedum from leaf cuttings by simply snipping off only healthy leaves from the parent plant with pruning shears or a sharp knife. To stop the spread of pests and diseases, don’t forget to clean your cutting tools with alcohol.
Apply the rooting hormone to the leaf node or cut area. Rooting hormone promotes quick rooting. Take the leaves now, and either put them in water or soil to root them.
Make sure the soil is moist and doesn’t retain water if you plan to plant roots in it. The leaf should be softly placed on the potting soil that drains well, covering the leaf node region.
Use a horticultural heating pad if you have one to keep the bottom of the pot or tray at around 70 degrees. Continue regularly misting the container with water to keep the appropriate humidity levels. Alternately, place the pot or tray under indirect lighting and cover it with clear plastic.
New Sedum plants will begin to sprout around the base in two to three weeks as the plant grows new roots. After transplanting the young seedlings, you can throw away the old leaf.
You might need a mesh or something akin to a toothpick to support the leaves in a glass of fresh water if you’re rooted in water. To prevent the water from becoming stagnant and rotting the leaves, you must constantly replace the water. It’s time to transplant your Sedum if you notice roots beginning to grow.
How to Propagate Sedum from Stem Cuttings
If there are any leaves below the planting surface, remove them and leave only a few leaves on the stem cutting. When cutting the leaves, take care not to harm the stem.
The stem should now be dipped in water, then a rooting hormone powder. Water aids in the powder’s adhesion.
Root the stem in soil or water as you choose. If you plan to root in the ground, prepare a soil that drains well and water it. Put the stem cutting into the potting soil slowly.
Every time the soil dries out, lightly water it. Sedum cutting requires water right now in order to establish roots and flourish. If necessary, you can water it at least once a day. Your cuttings may need three weeks to form roots; after they do, you may start watering them less frequently.
If you choose to root your stem cutting in water, fill a glass or bowl with fresh water before dipping your cutting inside. Make certain that no leaves are in the water, and always change the water each day. You can transplant your stem cuttings into pots after two to three weeks when you start to notice roots.
How to Propagate Sedum from Division(Offshoots)
If you are a home gardener, dividing your plants when they generate offshoots is the best technique to propagate Sedum. It is good for beginners because it is typically quite simple and successful.
Some things you’ll need are:
- a well-kept knife or pair of pruning shears (for cutting)
- a trowel or a shovel (to dig up the plant)
Sedum will begin sprouting new green branches in the spring, which is typically its growing season. To detach the sprouts from the parent plant is your aim.
The process of dividing a grown Sedum plant is comparable to dividing clones from a mother plant.
Making clean cuts with the shovel on both sides, dig up the entire plant. Ensure that you have the entire root ball and that the shovel has been driven deeply enough.
Cut the core component first, then move outward, aiming for two or more roots-bearing pieces with a green bud in each one. Obtaining pieces with several roots is the best situation.
To prevent drying out, make sure your divisions are replanted as soon as you can.
At the same depth, plant the divided Sedum before and at the base, and then cover with mulch or compost. The soil will stay moist thanks to this.
Which is preferable, soil or water for germination?
Even if you already know how to root a plant in water, David Clark, a professional gardener, has some excellent advice that will help you make the procedure more effective.
He offers advice on two simple plant-starting techniques that you might not have known about.
Two practical workshops on plant propagation were recently presented by Clark at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens.
He provided a plethora of knowledge, including these five excellent suggestions:
1. Build a miniature greenhouse. How frequently have you purchased comforters or bedding that was packaged in a plastic zipper bag? I frequently do so, and I usually consider, “This bag ought to be useful for something.
According to Clark, these bags make excellent miniature greenhouses for newly transplanted or rooted plants. Simply place the plant inside the bag and partially zip it up. This will assist in retaining moisture. In addition, a small aperture permits airflow to stop the development of mold.
“Because the plant needs to be confined, unless you have a greenhouse, Clark explained, I almost always root with a bag.
The bedding bags, as shown in the picture at the top of the article, can hold either a sizable plant or a number of smaller plants.
2. Use powders for rooting. By soaking a plant cutting in water, you can multiply plants in one of the easiest ways possible. Trim the stem horizontally above a node (see photo above). Soft, fleshy plants like the Wandering Jew, ivy, arrowhead plant, and spider plant respond nicely to this technique.
Using rooting products will boost your chances of success, according to Clark. There are numerous commercial goods available. These products contain a growth hormone to hasten the emergence of roots and destroy bacteria and fungi to stop the stem from decaying.
Dip your stem into the powder after dispensing a tiny bit of it. (Avoid inserting the stem into the product container directly.) Give the stem a minute to settle. The powder will be absorbed by the plant. Put the cutting’s tip in water; the water won’t completely wash the powder away.
He added that you can also utilize common home items to speed up roots. Cinnamon can be used to eliminate fungus and bacteria on plant stems. Make a rooting solution by dissolving one aspirin in water to encourage the formation of roots.
3. Give your new plant enough time to adjust to soil after being in water. According to Clark, if you root your cutting in water, it will grow roots that are best adapted to obtain its nutrients from water as opposed to soil. The plant could become stressed if it is transferred from water to soil right away.
As an alternative, mix a little dirt into the water you’re using to root your cutting. Do this gradually over the course of four or five weeks to allow your plant adjust to its new growing environment.
4. Learn about leaf section division. You may grow new plants from the leaves of succulents like the sansevieria pictured above. It’s not even necessary to utilize the full leaf; only a portion will do!
When you cut the leaf, Clark advised, be sure to mark which portion is the top and which is the bottom. As shown in the leftmost photo below, place the bottom portion of the leaf segment into a tray of moist perlite. (Fun fact: Perlite is a byproduct of volcanoes.)
5. Encourage plant runners as a means of division.
View the image of the Wandering Jew that is located close to the beginning of this article. Burying the stem horizontally is another approach to multiply such a plant. These nodes will produce new plants.
