The stinkhorns get their name from the fact that all of their fruiting bodies are covered in an unpleasant-smelling slime (mushroom). Fly and other insects that typically feed on or lay their eggs in carrion or dung are drawn to the slime. When insects visit, the mushroom spores either stick to them or are eaten by them, and the insect carriers spread the spores around. Really, it’s clever, but many don’t like the smell at all. It’s one thing to have mushrooms in one’s landscape, but most gardeners just cannot stand the smell of fresh dog poop or carrion.
Because the spores are contained in a structure, all stinkhorns develop from an egg-like sack and are hence connected to puffballs and earthstars. A mushroom may be seen when it is still in the egg stage or later, after it has fully grown. The mushroom doesn’t start to smell bad until it leaves the egg stage. It is not thought that this mushroom is toxic.
The stinkhorn that is currently flourishing in your yard is the octopus or squid stinkhorn (Clathrus columnatus), which Louisiana gardeners see most frequently.
