Why Have My Hydrangeas Turned Brown

We hear our clients asking this question in the late summer: “Why are the blossoms on my hydrangeas fading to brown? after that “Should I remove the hydrangea blossoms that are brown? There are numerous varieties of hydrangeas, thus the reason they are browning and the solution aren’t always the same for all plants. Here are some explanations for why different hydrangeas soon turn brown, along with some images of typical (sad!) dried blossoms.

1. Heat from the midday to late afternoon sun is the main cause of the browning of mophead hydrangea flowers like Endless Summer and Nikko Blue. Mophead cultivars will quickly turn brown if they are planted in full sun or an area where they receive intense sunlight at noon. However, the flowers on those plants will continue to bloom into the fall if they are situated where the early morning, late afternoon, and evening sun shines directly on them.

2. If planted in full or midday sun, lacecap hydrangeas also turn brown very rapidly. In general, lacecaps tend to fade more quickly than other hydrangea varieties, even if certain cultivars, like Twist n’ Shout, produce fresh blossoms later in the fall. So put these in morning or evening sun and take use of them while they are still around.

3. White blossoming The hydrangea paniculata kinds develop and maintain their beauty the best in direct sunlight. Variety names like “Grandiflora,” “Limelight,” and “Pinky Winky” will turn pink as they get older, but as long as they receive adequate water during hot weather, the flowers won’t brown out.

4. If hydrangeas wilt excessively in warmer weather, they will all turn brown. In the summer heat, water these shrubs deeply every few days (hand watering is insufficiently deep); also, mulch the area surrounding plants to help soil retain moisture longer.

5. Even though daily watering of hydrangeas can prevent browning, it can still happen. When watering, try to avoid getting the leaves and flowers wet since this encourages the growth of the fungus known as leaf-spot, which will turn the leaves and flowers brown.

Brown mophead flowers are a sign that the plant is receiving too much sunlight or that the flowers have repeatedly withered due to inadequate watering.

Even under shade, too much sun can turn lacecaps brown, and they may not live as long as other types of flowers.

The paniculata kinds of hydrangea thrive in direct sunlight, although they can turn brown if left dry between waterings or if they receive daily irrigation. In hot weather, newly planted H. paniculata may require watering every three to four days, but mature plants can go longer. Less frequently, deep water.

What should you do if hydrangea blooms start to deteriorate?

These often appear under rainy conditions, but they can also appear following excessive irrigation. Although the fungus has ugly patches, it doesn’t harm the plant or spread to neighboring plants. Adjust your irrigation to keep water off the leaves and remove the most ugly ones.

Anthracnose, a much worse problem that can really kill the shrub, may be the cause of leaves with brown or yellowish patches. Pay close attention to the stems and branches for cankers. Their appearance verifies the anthracnose infection on your hydrangea. However, keep calm. As you go, disinfect your pruners with a solution of bleach and water, and remove any diseased or dead plant parts. Mulch should also be removed and disposed of since it may contain fungus spores. Finally, employ a fungicide created especially for anthracnose.

How can a dead hydrangea be revived?

Greek words “hydor,” which means “water,” and “angos,” which means jar or vessel, combine to form the term “hydrangea.” Translation: a barrel of water! These lovely flowers that resemble pom poms require water to survive, and if they don’t get it, they wilt.

The woody stem of hydrangeas can make it challenging for the flower to obtain the water it requires. A small slice cut into the stem and an angled trim with a sharp knife help the plant absorb more water.

I used to use scissors to trim the ends of my flowers, but I’ve since moved to using a sharp knife on the advice of my friends at Byland’s. Apparently, using scissors causes the stems to be pinched, harming them and limiting their ability to absorb water.

While they were beautiful to look at when we originally built the floral arrangement for our Mother’s Day Frache Table, it didn’t take long for them to start to look very melancholy. I was able to keep them from being thrown away thanks to this simple approach, and the flowers still looked new and fresh!

Keep in mind that hydrangeas might wilt to a certain extent after which they cannot recover. The good news is that this hack is really easy to use and doesn’t call for anything complicated, so why not give it a shot?

Directions:

  • A kettle or pot of water should be heated up and then left to cool gradually. It ought to be really hot right now. Fill the vase with water.

Grow your hydrangeas in a location where they will receive sunshine in the mornings and evenings but not during the peak hours to prevent scorch damage.

They wilted too often

If hydrangeas are allowed to wilt too frequently in the heat, they will not only become burnt but also become brown.

Lack of moisture is what causes wilting, thus there are some effective methods to take to stop it from happening.

Give your hydrangeas a good glug of water every few days when the temps are climbing high, and prepare the soil to better retain moisture, to prevent repeated wilting. To help with this, sprinkle a small amount of mulch around the bases of each plant.

The leaves got wet!

Hydrangeas need to be watered frequently in hot weather, but overwatering can lead to issues.

Browning can occur when water collects on leaves and is unable to drain away adequately. Additionally, it may result in fungus and other problems that harm the plant in different ways.

To prevent damp leaves, water your hydrangea carefully, paying special attention to the soil and roots rather than the foliage.

You’ve got fungal damage…

If this is the case, the leaf will begin to develop the characteristic flaws, including brown pockmarks and an overall impression of bruising and injury.

Do not be alarmed if you discover leaf stain on your hydrangeas. Prior to the damage spreading to the entire point, it is frequently achievable to “nip the problem in the bud,” so to speak.

To prevent fungal damage: The strongest defense against fungal damage is prevention.

First, be careful to clear the area beneath your hydrangea shrub of trash and dead plants, as doing so will eliminate the fungi’s preferred breeding grounds.

Second, prune your bush’s lowest branches to provide airflow. As a result, fungus spores cannot settle.

If you are dealing with an illness and have missed the chance to avoid it, you should remove all of the plant’s dead or seriously affected leaves and destroy them to stop the virus from spreading.

Watch for leaves that have a minor infection and determine whether to employ natural remedies or fungicide chemicals to control it.

They’re in shock

Repotting hydrangea plants can be a little shocking to them, and on occasion, the shock is strong enough to turn the leaves brown.

How frequently should hydrangeas be watered?

  • Over the course of the growing season, water at a rate of 1 inch per week. To promote root growth, deeply water three times each week. All varieties of hydrangeas benefit from constant moisture, but bigleaf and smooth hydrangeas need more water. To water thoroughly while keeping moisture off the flowers and leaves, use a soaker hose. Hydrangeas won’t wilt as much if they are watered early in the day on hot days.
  • To keep the soil around your hydrangeas cool and moist, add mulch. Over time, an organic mulch decomposes, supplying nutrients and enhancing soil texture.
  • Apply fertilizer according to the type of hydrangeas you have. Every variety has varied requirements and will profit from applying fertilizer at various times. A soil test is the most effective tool for determining your fertility requirements.
  • In March, May, and June, bigleaf hydrangeas require numerous mild fertilizer applications.
  • Two applications in April and June work best for oakleaf and panicle hydrangeas.
  • The only time smooth hydrangea plants require fertilizing is in the late winter.
  • By selecting cultivars with resistant characteristics, you can avoid pests and diseases. Hydrangeas can have leaf spots, bight, wilt, and powdery mildew. Although they are uncommon on hydrangeas, pests might arise when the plants are under stress. Aphids, leaf tiers, and red spider mites are examples of potential pests. Your best line of defense is to properly care for hydrangeas.

Why do the leaves on my hydrangeas appear burnt?

Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) can be difficult to manage in terms of water. They are usually produced in cooler climates, which tends to consume less water. Additionally, they have exceptionally big leaf surface areas, which causes greater water loss. Hydrangeas also lack the ability to control water loss under drought stress circumstances because plants do not seal their stomates. This is easily capable of causing wilting and the subsequent leaf scorch (Fig. 1).

Hydrangeas frequently experience leaf scorch. This is frequently seen when a drip emitter comes loose from the plant’s pot and causes tip burn. On the middle to higher leaves, the initial light brown necrosis frequently shows symptoms. The leaf margin closest to the leaf tip is where symptoms first appear. The light brown colour may eventually turn nearly black with time (Fig. 2). In extreme cases, the leaf necrosis might extend halfway back toward the root of the leaf, which is another crucial diagnostic feature (Fig. 3). On the other hand, newly expanding leaves have also been seen to develop a minor leaf tip necrosis along the leaf margin (Fig. 4). Because the necrotic leaf margin tissue cannot extend as the internal tissue grows, these leaves appear cupped and crinkled as they mature (Fig. 5). After a week of overcast weather, which would restrict transpiration and hence the plant’s ability to absorb water, these symptoms have been most noticeable. On plants, the symptoms appear while the tiny leaves are still in their whorls and around the flower buds. Other species have also been said to exhibit same characteristics. According to a study co-authored by Dr. Bill Miller of Cornell University, the necrosis on “Stargazer” lilies is brought on by a lack of calcium (Fig.6). They discovered that compared to the leaves around the flower bud, the flower bud was a higher sink (had preferential demand) for Ca. Ca travels to the flower buds rather than these surrounding leaves. As a result, a Ca limiting situation develops, leading to the cell death of the leaves. When zinnias are grown in the summer in hot, humid circumstances, the same problems can arise. While the growth is still in the whorl, the wrapper leaves that surround the flower bud develop leaf tip necrosis (Fig. 7). At three grower locations, we noticed that the newly expanding hydrangea leaves had leaf tip burn. The tissue at the leaf’s outer margin was sampled, and the tissue’s Ca concentration was determined to be low. For pink and white hydrangeas, the ideal substrate pH ranges from 5.8 to 6.2. The pH range for blue hydrangeas is between 5.2 and 5.5. As a result, to maintain the substrate’s acidity, less lime is normally supplied. This also implies that less calcium is being given to the hydrangea plant. The majority of calcium-based fertilizers are also basic, so they are normally avoided to avoid raising the pH of the substrate. If Ca does not naturally occur in the irrigation water, the plants will receive only very little amounts of Ca, and inadequate conditions are more likely to develop. High humidity in the greenhouse during flower bud formation may increase calcium deficiency symptoms on the young, developing leaves. Under these circumstances, Ca uptake from the substrate via mass flow is constrained by a lack of plant transpiration. The decreased transpiration reduces the amount of Ca that is accessible and causes the leaves surrounding the budding flower to burn at the tips. Promoting air flow in the greenhouse will aid in preventing this environmental shortage in addition to providing appropriate Ca in the range of 50 to 100 ppm. Utilizing horizontal flow fans or performing an air exchange to release the humidity will increase air flow.
