The most common native Sedum species in eastern North America is Sedum ternatum, also referred to as woodland stonecrop. [1] It blooms from April to May and has white flowers. This plant can thrive in sunny areas if there is enough moisture present, but it is typically found in the understory of forests. Its popular name, “stonecrop,” alludes to its capacity to flourish on top of stones, where its succulent leaves aid in the retention of moisture in shallow soil. It easily adapts to usage in gardens.
A large portion of the eastern United States, as well as parts of the west and south of the Appalachian Mountains, as well as parts of the north and east of the United States border, are native home of Sedum ternatum.
The white flowers of Sedum ternatum, which have four rather than five petals, and the leaves’ arrangement in whorls of three, which gave rise to the species name, set it apart from other sedums, both native and artificial, which are frequently found in the United States.

Are Sedum plants invasive?
Sedums can survive in less-than-ideal environments, therefore the author covers a stone wall with a variety of them (identified in chart below).
A creeping sedum may be the ideal plant for you if you want something attractive that can survive with almost complete neglect. Sedums show off where many other plants would be afraid to tread. For instance, they settle in the crevices of a garden wall or pathway, on roofs or the tops of birdhouses with slightly sloping roofs, or even under huge trees where their gigantic roots control the majority of the soil’s moisture. Additionally, they function well in borders, containers, and rock gardens.
Many gardeners have started looking more closely at plants in the genus Sedum as seasonal and protracted droughts become more frequent across the United States. The ground-hugging relatives of Sedum ‘Autumn Joy,’ which is well-known for its late russet blooms, are also gaining popularity.
In my yard, creeping sedums, often called stonecrops, provide endless fascination. Over the course of my many years as a gardener, they rank among the most adaptable, drought-tolerant, and simple-to-grow perennials I’ve ever grown. Sedums really require less work from a gardener as their area grows. These slow-growing plants, which are renowned for their propensity to spread swiftly, prevent weeds from taking root. Since they eventually just fade away, it is not required to deadhead the spent blooms, but it is simple to get rid of old blossoms using a string trimmer. They rarely contract illnesses or pests as long as they aren’t overwatered.
Even the poorest soil may support sedums, and small amounts of soil are really their preferred medium. However, the key to cultivating them is proper drainage. A sedum will be quickly killed by excessive wetness, especially standing water, which will accomplish what no drought can.
Even in the driest conditions, sedums practically never need further water after they are established. Sedums function admirably almost anyplace as long as they receive proper drainage, but they are particularly well suited for gardens in hot, arid regions like the western United States. They can also be found sticking up from boulders or sprouting from only a few inches of scree in cold, alpine environments where they are widespread. For almost every USDA Hardiness Zone, there is at least one Sedum species. The majority of creeping sedums can tolerate little shade but prefer full sun. Native to North America, Sedum ternatum is one sedum that prefers shade and a little bit more moisture than its relatives.
Creeping Sedums
Hardiness: The Northern Hemisphere’s Sedum genus has more than 400 species of succulent annuals, perennials, biennials, subshrubs, and shrubs. Sedums are commonly grown as creeping ground coverings. Each USDA Hardiness Zone has at least one species that can withstand it. Most thrive in Zones 4 through 9. OUTLINE: Five-petaled flowers in shades of yellow, white, or pink lie above mats of succulent leaves that range in color from green to blue-gray to reddish bronze. In the winter, the leaves of evergreen species take on colours of crimson and russet. PROPAGATION: From spring to midsummer, propagate plants by division or seed in the spring or fall. Plant in rock gardens, walls, recesses in walkways, and pots. You may also use it as a border edging or in sweeps on slopes. The majority of creeping sedums like full sun, although they can also tolerate little shade. They prefer medium to poor garden soil that drains well; once they are established, no additional watering is required. They cannot endure any amount of time in standing water.

Creeping sedums change from season to season
Creeping sedums are attractive for their dependability and lack of fussiness, but I’m also drawn to them for their succulent leaves, lengthy flowering cycles, and, in some cases, year-round attractiveness in the garden. Sedum blooms often come in little, star-shaped clusters that range in color from white to yellow to purple to pink, and are no larger than an inch in diameter and 4 to 5 inches tall. The carpets of blossoms they generate when planted in large numbers are stunning. Many evergreen sedums, such as Sedum album “Murale” and Sedum stenopetalum, blush to a rich red or bronze color in the fall and even throughout the winter. These stunning contrasts to an otherwise inert landscape last until early spring. They look particularly lovely on a snowy background.
One of the simplest plants to grow from seed, cuttings, or divisions is the sedum. Stem cuttings or divisions will guarantee the maintenance of a plant’s traits once you’ve found one you like because sedums don’t always grow true from seed. Sedums spread quickly, yet they are not invasive. They are easily lifted and transported because of their thin roots. As long as there is adequate drainage, they may survive the winter in most planters and come out of dormancy in the early to midspring.
I complained as I pulled boulders from the cultivated sections of my father’s fields as a young child working on the family farm in northeastern Maryland. In a fitting irony, decades later I still wander the same fields looking for fascinating stones to use as backdrops and accents for my ever-growing collection of sedums.
A few ways to use creeping sedums
Sedums that are resilient make lovely staples. In a section of my rock garden, I utilize a lot of sedums to simulate a cascade. You can blend several sedums, such as the white-flowered Sedum album, the S. grisebachii, and the yellow-flowered Sedum sexangulare (foreground, first photo below) (background). They perform well in a region that can be seen from above.
These year-round, low-maintenance plants are ideal for containers. You won’t need to bring the pots indoors for the winter because creeping sedums do well in containers. Additionally, because of their drought tolerance, you won’t need to locate someone to water them while you are away. Sedums, like the yellow-flowered S. sexangulare (Sempervivum spp. and cvs., Zones 410, second photo below), can be used as underplantings or in combination with other succulents like hens and chicks.
Make stepping stones or rock walls’ sharp edges softer. Within cracks in a stone wall or between stepping stones, sedums, like S. spurium ‘Fuldaglut,’ grow with almost no soil (third photo, below). Use small, mature seedlings, usually referred to as plugs, and combine with some fine gravel and soil.
Utilize a patchwork of sedums to tame a difficult terrain. Maybe you have a spot where gardening and lawn mowing have never worked well together, like a hillside with compacted soil. It might be the perfect place to use creeping sedums, like the pink-flowered S. spurium ‘John Creech’ and others, to intertwine regions of color and texture. The “quilt will vary three times a year as the sedums exhibit the colors of their early-season foliage, then their blossoms, and finally their winter leaves in various tones.
Sedum is a native of the Northeast.

Where are sedums native to?
The Latin word “sedo,” which means “to sit,” is where the name Sedum derives from. They can be found in Mexico, Europe, Asia, North Africa, and even certain native species of North America. Popular names for recognized species include Creeping Tom, Gold Chain, Bird’s Bread, and Burro’s Tail. The nomenclature of the genus for the adaptable plants is a subject of some debate. While some members of the family are now considered to be Hylotelephium, others are still classified as Sedum.
Such modifications are still taking place in the botanical world as researchers dissect plant DNA and rearrange them to better reflect plant family groups. Sedums have gained popularity as garden and greenhouse specimens since the early 1900s, but collectors have utilized them since the 1800s.
Sedums — are they native to New England?
Despite being native to North America, woodland stonecrop is only present in New England as escaped or naturalized individuals. This species is a fantastic choice for a rock garden.
What distinguishes succulents from sedums?
To illustrate our argument, we chose these five sedums for a group portrait. Despite the fact that two of them (the “Pork and Beans” plants on the left) are identical cultivars, none of them resemble one another. Sedum has several hundred species, and there are numerous cultivars with various colors, sizes, and shapes. Sedums fall under all of those classifications, including those for shrubs, ground coverings, indoor plants, and perennial flowers.

The sedums we selected all have one thing in common: if you provide them with the ideal growing circumstances, they will all thrive both indoors and outdoors.
How to cultivate sedums inside:
- Sedums should be watered once or twice a month and potted in cactus mix to provide drainage.
- In a location with filtered sun, plant sedums (direct sun can burn their leaves).

Sedum plant care instructions:
- Sedums can be grown as perennial ground covers, shrubs, and flowering plants in USDA growing zones 5 to 9.
- Sedums should be planted in flower beds, either at the front of the border if they are creepers or mixed in with late-season perennials and ornamental grasses if they are taller or shrubbier.
- Sedums that can withstand droughts do best in the sun or partial shade (however the amount of sunshine may change the color of the leaves).
- Pork and beans are a good example of a crop that requires well-drained soil.
Are dogs poisoned by sedum?
Sedum is a perennial plant in the succulent family that is also known as stonecrop. Popular uses for this low-maintenance plant include rock gardens, rock walls, ground cover, edging, and indoor/outdoor containers. Sedums include 600 different plant species and are typically thought to be non-toxic to both people and animals. Sedum leaves, often known as bittercress, have a mildly peppery, bitter taste. Sedum is not one of the few succulent species that are known to be poisonous.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Sedum ternatum is an evergreen wildflower that forms mats. Little blue-green leaves are present. Sprays of six-foot-tall starry white blooms rise in the early summer. This gorgeous sedum grows next to calcareous rocks in the nature.
A native of the eastern United States, from Maine to Georgia, as well as the western United States, from Michigan to Iowa and Arkansas, this plant is hardy.
Plants can be found growing in shady ravines, wooded river and creek banks, shady cliff faces, and rocky wooded slopes. In relatively open woodlands with little rival vegetation, plants are typically found. Near streams, they frequently create sizable mats that cover mossy surfaces, tree roots, and rocks.
Sedum ternatum is a trailing groundcover plant with a succulent appearance. The stems are unbranched save at the base and green or pinkish. The sprawling stems’ fibrous roots take hold when they come into touch with damp earth.
The width of a leaf is about half its length. They are arranged in threes and are juicy and almost spherical. The higher leaves are more compact and restricted.
The fruitful stems are finished off in the spring by cymes of 10 to 25 starry white flowers. Each floret has four slender petals and is half an inch across. Three or four widely spreading flower-branched cymes have a flat top. About a month is spent blooming from late spring to early summer.
Each floret develops into four little, 1/4-inch-long follicles as it ages. Each follicle breaks along one side when it reaches maturity, producing a tiny wind-borne seed.
The foliage is at least 6-12 inches wide and 2-3 tall. Flowers reach heights of 6 to 8 inches.
Sedum ternatum thrives in soil that is either moist or dry, with either partial sun or moderate shade. Plants can withstand alkaline pH, drought, loamy or rocky soil, and shade.
Plants are ideal alternatives for the Rock Gardens or Shade Gardens in landscaping. Sedum ternatum may also be planted in masses or utilized as a groundcover, accent, or grouping. Showy Blooms are provided, and it is an important element of Cottage Gardens, Deer Resistant Plantings, Water-Wise Landscapes, Low Maintenance Plantings, Perennial Borders, and Wildlife Gardens.
What uses does sedum serve?
Common in stony soil or on rock outcrops in arid or semiarid (temperate) regions. Some species can be found in tropical highlands, at very high latitudes or elevations (Walters 2006).
Sedum, the largest genus in the Crassulaceae family and the one with the greatest distribution in temperate North America, with about 400 species. Herbs and shrubs are both types of Sedum species. Sedum typically features cymose inflorescences and succulent leaves. Fruit is rarely capsules and is typically a group of follicles (Walters 2006).
History In China and Korea, Sedum sarmentosum is extensively used in folk medicine to treat chronic inflammatory illnesses such chronic viral hepatitis (Moon 2009). A number of Sedum species are prized in many nations for their flavor in salads and soups in addition to their medical applications. Sedum sarmentosum’s leaves and petals are used in East Asian cuisine’s well-known vegetable dish “namul.” German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt included Sedum reflexum in one of his favorite soups in the early 19th century (Faccida 1998). Due to its slightly astringent sour flavor, the Dutch utilized the same species in tossed green salads. In the far west, North Americans chopped Sedum rhodanthum young shoots to include in their salads. Last but not least, Sedum species have long been prized for their decorative value in gardens and homes.
Sedum is most frequently and widely used to alleviate inflammation and discomfort. Discovering its anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive mode of action is the focus of current study. Alkaloids, tannins, and cyanogenic chemicals are present in Sedum species, but it is believed that the flavonoid content is what gives these plants their anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive qualities (De Melo 2005). There were no discovered randomized controlled trials. Sedum sarmentosum serves as an ACE inhibitor and stops the loss of collagen cartilage tissues in mouse models, according to in vitro research (Oh 2004, Kim 2005). Nitric oxide and prostaglandin synthesis are suppressed, reactive oxygen species are prevented from forming, and anti-angiogenic action is one of the proposed mechanisms (Jung 2008 & De Melo 2005).
Sedum alfredii, a native of south China, has a hyperaccumulating ecotype that can absorb and store large quantities of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in its shoots. For phytoremediation initiatives, the capacity to absorb and withstand harmful amounts of metals from the soil is encouraging. In order to perhaps transfer the hyperaccumulation features into crop species for use in biofortification, the process by which Sedum alfredii hyperaccumulates is being studied (Tian 2009).
Sedum aizoon, a species of sedum that is not used medicinally, has been linked to 41 case reports of hepatic veno-occlusive disease from national medical journals between 1998 and 2007. (Wu 2008).
